First off, let me start off by stating that i am not comparing the overall body of these two players in which i will divulge in. I will be comparing where Hackenberg is RIGHT NOW alongside where this other QB was when he began.
Many of you already know where i'am going with this, but give it a minute, it might just actually pan out.
In 1993, the Two top hot QBs coming out of College were:
1-Drew Bledsoe
2- Rick Mirer
The rest were:
3-Billy Joe Hobert
4-Mark Brunell
5-Gino Torretta
6-Alex Van Pelt
7-Elvis GrBac
8-Trent Green
Th Green Bay Packers were in a huge youth movement with new head coach Mike Holmgren. Their GM Ron Wolf was just trying to make a name for himself. As we all know he traded for Brett Favre from Atlanta for a 1st rounder. Meaning, he had so much trust in Brett, that he was willing to sacrifice getting Drew Bledsoe or a highly Touted Rick Mirer. He took that shot.
Brett was Horrible in his short stint with Atlanta. He wasnt that great in the '92 preseason as he was very raw. Some of you Jets historians remember the pre-season game the Jets had at Wisconsin led by Browning Nagle as he out performed Favre in every facet. I kid you not, Favre looked every bit like Christian Hackenberg. Erratic at best.
The obvious choice for Holmgren was to start Don Majikowski week one as Todd is doing with Josh McCown. The head coach will not take a chance like a GM would in the off season this early as they're :
a)Trying to salvage the season
b) Save their jobs by keeping the locker room competetive
c) Lastly, allowing the raw talent of the back up QB to speed up his process by soaking up every thing he's witnessing.
Now what i'am about to say may ruffle some feathers,
Week one occurred for Green Bay, As we all know the Majik man was very fragile (as is McCown). Enter Favre. Yes he was raw, but there was something different about him that we might see from Hack when given the opportunity.
THE GAME MATTERED !
No more OTA's....No More Mini-Camps- No More Training Camps...NO MORE FAKE GAMES.
This was where he had to place it all together and make it work. To tell you the truth, Brett wasnt all that good in that game, but when the chips were down, he won the game and it propelled that organization to realize they made the right choice.
The parallel that i'am drawing up here is that No fan, No media and the league thought Brett Favre was any good to merit a trade for a 1st rounder. Kind of how OUR FANS, OUR MEDIA and every one around the league feels the way about Christian as a starter for our Franchise.
Only time will tell if he can seize the moment as Favre did when he finally had the opportunity of a life time.
