Should the Jets go all in on signing Kirk Cousins

Fanrag -- The New York Jets‘ neverending search for a franchise quarterback has been a hurdle for so long that much of the fan base can’t comprehend it coming to an end. While the draft always offers potential answers at the NFL’s most important position, free agency is usually not as kind.

This year is expected to be different. Unless the Washington Redskins franchise tag Kirk Cousins for the third time in a row, for an absurd cost of around $34 million, the 29-year-old franchise signal caller will hit free agency.

It’s no secret the cost will not come cheap — he’s expected to land a contract that would pay him nearly $30 million per year over the course of the next four or five seasons, with at least half of that guaranteed. The arguments surrounding Cousins will vary, but let’s break down why it’s worth the Jets going all-in to land him this offseason.

Rapid Rebuild

Every offseason checklist for the Jets starts with the same priority: quarterback. The problem is, they aren’t picking in the top three as once expected. This all but ensures they won’t have the chance to land Josh Rosen or Sam Darnold unless they mortgage a ton of their future draft capital in a trade up. There’s no guarantee that even Baker Mayfield would fall to them at sixth.

Going into the draft with those uncertainties is a massive risk. This is a team that can’t go into next year starting yet another old “bridge” quarterback. On the flip side, if they did land Cousins, it should only cost one thing: cap space.

Mike Maccagnan has at least $80 million to work with – a lot of money to use in free agency. Most importantly, this would allow the team to allocate draft assets elsewhere; the Jets aren’t short on needs.

They could land a pass rusher like Bradley Chubb in the top 10, a superstar running back in Saquon Barkley, or one of the best defenders in football, linebacker Roquan Smith.

It’s safe to say that all three positions mentioned above (dependent on re-signing Demario Davis) will be key needs. Going into the draft with quarterback already solved would accelerate their rebuild tremendously.

An Ideal Fit

Washington’s offense has experienced plenty of ups and downs during the Cousins era, but the latter was rarely due to him. The Redskins ran a heavy dose of play action, where Cousins’ ability to throw with touch to all three levels of the field flourished more often than not.

There was one key problem this year (outside of significant injuries on offense): Washington’s run game ranked 28th in the league, averaging a measly 90.5 yards on the ground per game.

Under both John Morton and Jeremy Bates, the Jets would ideally be a run-heavy team that relies on their defense, a unit they have invested heavily in over the past few drafts. If they can find an upgrade at center in free agency, their offense would have enough firepower before the draft to set up Cousins with enough supporting talent.

On top of the on-field fit, the front office has put a premium on building the right culture. Farewell Sheldon Richardson and an expected happy trails to Muhammad Wilkerson, hello Jamal Adams and company.

Cousins’ attitude and preparation are as good as it gets across the NFL. Bringing a well-prepared and dedicated leader into the fold to run the offense not only creates stability, but builds long-term success.

No Long-Term Setback

There is a common fear among Jet fans when inking Kirk Cousins to potentially the biggest deal the NFL has witnessed: the long-term ramifications of setting back the franchise financially.

This argument holds little weight due to one pressing question: Outside of Leonard Williams, whom are the Jets going to pay in the next three years?

Their best players are on the rookie wage scale and the few veterans worth keeping long-term are either under contract in that window or extremely affordable to bring back. A majority of the contracts the front office has constructed have not had a significant amount of guaranteed money outside of the first two years.

Many become infatuated with cap space and the inflated prices of the quarterback market. Derek Carr, an average-at-best quarterback, reset the market with a deal that pays him $25 million per year. Cousins will top that quite soon and it won’t be long before many after him do the same.

The salary cap across the NFL rises each year. With it comes a dramatic increase for the quarterback market. His pending deal might draw criticism in Year 1, but by the midway point he could trickle outside the top five highest-paid signal-callers.

There’s no denying it would be an overpay, but if every free-agent contract for star-caliber players draws that reaction, is it really an overpay or just a trend within the market?

It’s time for the Jets to end their franchise quarterback drought and do whatever they can to land Kirk Cousins in free agency.

I don't want any part of him. He's already shown whenever there was a big game in Washington, Cousins wouldn't lead the team to victory. I don't want the guy that helps the Jets enter that massive cesspool of mediocrity. I want the Jets to win it all. Meaning the SB, and NOTHING else is important.

I don't give a crap about getting to the playoffs only to be one and done. I don't care about hosting a playoff game if we're going to lose. The front offices mission statement that Mac and toilet are absolutely responsible for doing is to progressively make the Jets better each and every year until they win the SB. IF the Jets are anything other than SB champs on any given year, they are called LOSERS.

Mac should do his job and get us the guy that can take over in the very biggest of games, the SB, and lead the team to victory.

Quite frankly, I do not believe Cousins is that guy.

As I have been saying Cousins Baby..get him If there was way to get Cousins & Barkley we would be all set. Pick up a FA rusher for now & build the line. We would be like a b-17 Bombs sway lol

Age, talent, need & we have the money. Plus we still have the longshot qB on the bench

Look Ny sent trump to washington so now Washington can send Cousins to NY...see that was easy.....Plus one more thing more Jet fans would be in the seats to support the team

Cousins would be years to late to help the Jets enter mediocrity. That's where we have dwelled for decades.
I know you don't feel Cousins is the guy who can take over the very biggest of games , but who is that guy in your opinion. Is it a free agent the Jets should target , or is it a specific draft prospect that will realistically be available for Mac to draft? Who is your guy?

Say what you want about Cousins but the facts are. He played with lack of talent at the WR position... Terrelle Pryor was garbage... Doctson was nowhere to be found in the 1st half of the season and completely inconsistent in the 2nd half of the season. TE Jordan Reed was injured. His RB's were injured and inconsistent..... His OL suffered injuries all year... yet he still threw for 4000 27 tds and completeded 64% of his passes and only 12 Ints.. I don't know if he is worth the money he is gonna get but I do know this if Josh McCown was on the Skins they may have went 3-13... The WR, OL, RB corps for the Jets was 10 times better than the Skins and if McCown was healthy maybe we go 6-10 or 7-9....... If we had cousins we probably go 9-7 or 10-6.... with this current team.. Sign Cousins and either in Free Agency OR draft get OL,WR, CB and Edge Rusher that perform and I think you have a playoff team.

No with all that said I much rather draft Rosen, Mayfield, Darnold and build around one of those guys. Lets hope the Broncos make a big run for Cousins.

I bet the Broncos will go after him since they would be a better spot with that defense. We don't have a dominant defense, have an awful OL and only decent skill positions. I want youth. If Cousins had ever won a big game then I might be interested, but never at his asking price.

As I just stated in another thread that IF he does indeed hit the market the resulting bidding war by teams to get him will drive the price sky high and there is no way to know how much money that Jets would be willing to throw his way. It's certainly going to be interesting to see this drama unfold. Personally I think he is cost prohibitive, but, I don't know any more than you guys do.

The Jets, as of this moment are not anywhere even close to being mediocre. The fact is, right now, they SUCK. They are a bottom feeder. A punch line for all the other respectable teams in the league right now. They are still very much in rebuild mode. When they reach that final, finished product, I do not want a mediocre team. I want a team that is a contender.

The guy IMO is Baker Mayfield, however that's just my opinion. If Mac thinks Rosen is the only guy worth taking then I want him. I just do not think Kirk Cousins is that guy............

TRUE. That is again very much a concern. Just another reason why I don't want him. I do not want Mac to be held hostage by the mediocre/average QB.....

I agree except he still could be a good QB with a real team. At the right price I would like him

I'm not sure you can get Cousins for the right price? How often do young QB's with a decent resume come along through FA? Many teams will be interested in him. There is sure to be a bidding war and that would preclude the idea of getting Cousins for the "right price".............

also depends how mac feels about the qbs in the draft. if he feels cousins potential/skill level is higher than their ceiling, maybe we go after cousins. but you don't just go after cousins and pay him 150M because hes the best in the fa class and theres pressure to get a qb. u go after him if u feel like hes the answer

I doubt he leaves Washington but PLEEZE no more re-tread QB's
O'Donnel
Boomer
Vinny (Except for 98)
Favre
Fitz

All of the above and 2 playoff appearances between them (and one was an 8-8 record)

And as mentioned if he hits the market the price will go through the roof.

Nope

I'm thawing to the idea, but only if the team keeps its commitment to drafting a true long-term solution at QB.

I like the idea of having a good QB (not a bridge) going into the draft. IMO this would open us up to drafting another position, whether it be RB, ER, CB or OL. We wont be drafting on need It would be BPA and if that was a QB, good for us.

If there are several teams interested in Cousins, at least a couple should be waay more attractive than the jets - teams that are ready to win except no QB. We are not that.
