NFL Found 11 Balls Deflated by 2 Pounds By Pats

Also, Goodell came down hard on the saints for bounty-gate so Goodell may come down hard on the patriots. Although not nearly the same offense, the fact that the patriots have now been caught taping the rams, spygate, and now 11 out of the 12 footballs obtained from the pats were 2 pounds underweight is alarming. The disregard displayed by the Patriots in regards to the rules is alarming, and if I were Goodell I would need to come down harshly on them. Set an example out of the patriots and show the league that no matter how "prestigious" of an organization you are, you need to act like one and need to abide by the rules like every other team does.

Steve PolitiThrow the pump at them! NFL must hold Patriots accountable for latest cheating scandal | Politi

If the latest story from ESPN is true, and it wasn’t one or two but ELEVEN footballs that weren’t properly inflated on the Patriots sideline, then we’re about to get another test of the NFL’s battered enforcement department.

Because that’s not some coincidence that can be shrugged off — or, at the Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady have done since the scandal broke, laughed off. That’s suggests something systematic.

That’s cheating. It doesn’t matter if the advantage was minimal, and if the Patriots could’ve been using medicine balls and they still would have crushed the Colts. They need to be held accountable for this.

The league took away a first-round draft pick and fined Bill Belichick $500,000 for his role in SpyGate, but Roger Goodell should go a step further with this multiple offender. He should suspend him for a game or two at the start of next season (benching him for the Super Bowl is too severe) to send a message that this franchise isn’t above the law.

Mike Rosenberg of Sports Illustrated had a fascinating column on the lengths the Patriots have gone over the years to beat the rules, how NFL teams are still convinced they are stealing defensive signals and worried enough about locker room intruders that they bring their own locks to Foxborough.

This is Belichick’s reputation in the league, so no one should be surprised if the ESPN story is true. From the start, even after Brady’s that’s-the-least-of-my-worries denial, this story was so believable because of the Patriots’ past.

And that’s the issue here. There are 31 other teams in the NFL but these stories, these controversies, always seem to happen to one in particular. That’s why the NFL has to throw the pump — er, the book at Belichick and the Patriots if this story is true.

Draft picks, fines, and yes, even suspensions should be on the table, because if there’s one thing we’ve learned about the Patriots and cheating, they’ve done it before and no one would be surprised if they do it again.

It's not that they deflated their balls, for me at least, it's that they've cheated on more than one occasion and nothing ever seems to happen to them other than a slap on the wrist. At some point the commissioner needs to make an example out of them to show them that the rules are ironclad and that no team can change them for their own benefit.

There's a difference between what Woody and the Patriots did. Woody is just a goof ball and didn't understand that what he was saying about Revis was tampering. The Patriots understand that they are cheating but do it anyways and when they are asked about it they laugh it off like they are above the law. If the Jets lose a draft pick and the Patriots get off something is clearly wrong with this league.

Why Tom Brady should be at the center of Deflate-gate

Dan Wetzel
By Dan Wetzel

Through the years, Tom Brady has always been able to remain above whatever the latest fray that engulfed the New England Patriots.

Brady was the quarterback, perhaps teased for his fashion or footwear or occasionally awkward celebrations, but never much on issues of substance. He was the underdog turned megastar, likable and respectable and just oh so good.

Bill Belichick played the villain, the supposed win-at-all-costs genius under the ratty hoodie. When allegations of underhandedness or unsportsmanlike play or anything else hit, it was all assumed to be Belichick’s orders, not Brady’s.

Now comes the so-called Deflate-gate scandal however. The NFL, according to ESPN, found 11 of the 12 footballs New England provided for Sunday’s blowout of the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game were underinflated by as much as two pounds per square inch of pressure.

And now this is a Tom Brady situation. Now these are questions for Tom Brady to answer, once the NFL’s investigation is complete, likely this week. After all these years, he’s earned the right to be heard.

.It’s not uncommon for teams to try to rig the football to the preference of their quarterbacks. Some, most notably players with bigger hands, want the ball inflated as much as possible to allow for better spirals. Others want a softer ball that’s easier to grip and, on the other end, catch. Some of it changes by the weather and game conditions. Some of it is just psychological.

Whatever it is, it always comes down to the QB.

You don’t just use random footballs in the NFL, or even major college football. They are never brand new. A coach doesn't just decide "try that one." They’ve been selected, and prepared, specifically for a certain QB, and in New England that means Brady and Brady only.

They can take weeks to get exactly right. They get scuffed and buffed to remove the slippery wax veneer. They get soaked in water to help make them less susceptible to moisture during actual in-game weather. Some teams rub dirt all over them. Others sand the laces just so.

In general around the league, almost every football has been thrown in practice by the starting quarterback prior to seeing game action. If he likes it, it gets promoted to Sunday. It’d be surprising if Brady didn’t follow that trend. After a decade and a half with the franchise, Brady’s precise desires would be well known.

So if New England purposefully deflated 11 footballs after pregame measurements by the referees, then it was done to benefit Tom Brady.

There is no equipment man or sideline attendant or anyone at all in Foxborough (not even Belichick) who would mess with Brady’s footballs without his knowledge, if not active participation. That’s just how it works. You don’t go rogue on the greatest player in team history, particularly with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. And if they did, Brady would just order them to fix it immediately.

Brady’s only comments on the scandal thus far were of dismissive shock. In his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Dennis and Callahan Show” early Monday morning, he claimed surprise a deflated ball was even an issue.

“I have no idea,” Brady said on the Boston radio station, as he laughed at the question. “I think I heard it all at this point. … It’s ridiculous. … Oh, God, that’s the last of my worries. I don’t even respond to stuff like that.”

It’s no longer the last of Brady’s worries, and he’s most certainly going to be asked to respond additionally.

If there is an explanation, no one is better equipped to provide it.

If he didn’t instruct someone on the Patriots’ staff to make the football agreeable to his preferences, then he must have noticed the footballs were underinflated the moment he grabbed one, let alone across an entire first half.

This is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, known for his preparation and attention to detail. It’s not plausible that he didn’t either know or recognize the situation. There is nothing about the grip of a football that is going to escape him.

As for “[hearing] it all at this point,” the implication is that Brady had never heard of a ball being underinflated, let alone his. As such, the suggestion was just ridiculous. Like, say, the NFL accusing him of filling it with helium.

The national media is starting to pick this up and run with it. The NFL might not be able to sweep this one under the rug, or burn the footballs.

This is big time embarrassing for the NFL, to have this happen in the championship game. At first I didn't think anything was going to happen. I didn't realize that the refs checked the balls before the game started. Some body let the air out while the game was in progress.

I am loving every second of this. Do you think this will be a distraction for them heading into the SB? I agree with the article by the way. This has Brady written all over it. The conditions were not made for throwing but they were able to throw the ball all over the field.

I doubt it will distract the players. 90% of them had no clue that this happened. They are pros, they'll do what they do. Play football.

I'm wondering what the NFL is going to do. After the Ray Rice tape stuff, the spy gate tapes being burned, and now this, the integrity of the entire league is going to be in the cross fire.

Have to wonder who actually let the air out, and who told them to do it?

They start talking, and the real poop begins

Definitely calls for a forfeit and a lifetime ban of Belichick

Seahawks minus 9 1/2 over Colts in I Super Bowl in 10 days

Kraft should also forfeit the first round pick and pay a 5 million dollar fine as a multiple offender

Yeah, great ideas.

it really is entertaining from a jet fans perspective..

kraft accuses woody of tampering for what seemed to be fairly mild stuff.. but hey, the patriots now do everything by the book & so should everyone else, right?? right??

then, blamo!! deflategate becomes the talk of the sports world less than two weeks before NE tries to win its first SB since... well since spygate of course..

so instead of hearing the NE patriots "redemption" narrative the sports media would have force fed us.. we get to watch BB & tommy wiggle & squirm trying to deny the undeniable!!

LOLz you can't make this up!!

Ex-NFL ref Gerry Austin told ESPN halftime inspection showed all 12 Colts footballs properly inflated, all 12 Patriots footballs were not.

If this is true, it's the nail in the coffin.

NFL will have to do something dramitic
