Todd Bowles on Geno Smith: A great quarterback ... in college

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- If Geno Smith tuned into the Todd Bowles-Mike Maccagnan news conference Wednesday expecting to receive an endorsement from his new bosses, he probably was disappointed.

Smith
The New York Jets' new power couple was noncommittal on the quarterback situation, offering no hints -- none -- on how they plan to approach the season.

"Obviously, he was a great college quarterback," said Bowles, who went on to say it's premature to give a definitive evaluation of Smith.

He's right, Smith was a prolific passer at West Virginia, but he's two years removed from those days. Smith has started 29 games in the NFL (he's 11-18), plenty of time for evaluators to get a feel for his upside. Obviously, Bowles and Maccagnan didn't want to get into specifics, not even declaring an open competition.

Then again, only two quarterbacks are under contract for the Jets: Smith and Matt Simms. By the time they get to training camp, the Jets probably will have one or two other viable options on the depth chart.

Bowles made a passing reference to the possibility of Smith being the starter. It came in response to a question about new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, who was hired Tuesday.

"He understands that, if Geno is our guy going forward, we need to get some people around him to do a lot of things better -- and Chan is outstanding at that," Bowles said. "I made it a priority for me to get (Gailey)."

Judging by that comment, you could surmise that Bowles believes Smith can be salvaged with a better supporting cast. At this point, we're probably reading too much into vague remarks.

Maccagnan, who could have the opportunity to select a quarterback with the sixth pick in the draft (Jameis Winston? Marcus Mariota?), said the organization will take a wait-and-see approach.

"I’m excited about working with Geno and getting to know him better," Maccagnan said. "I would say at this point in time, going forward, with Todd and the staff, we need to sit down and go through this roster and determine what we want to do schematically."

Todd Bowles: Geno Smith was 'a great college quarterback'

Todd Bowles is apparently not enamored with Geno Smith. (USATSI) Todd Bowles is apparently not enamored with Geno Smith. (USATSI)

The New York Jets recently hired former Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles to be their new head coach. Bowles is the sixth straight defensive head coach hired by the Jets. Since Rich Kotite, the Jets have turned to Bill Parcells, Al Groh, Herman Edwards, Eric Mangini, Rex Ryan and now Bowles.

While New York's defense has declined over the last couple of seasons, the major concerns for the Jets come on offense, specifically at the quarterback position, where the current starter is second-year man Geno Smith. Asked about Smith, Bowles responded:

Yikes. That is not exactly a ringing endorsement. It's a back-handed compliment if I've ever heard one.

Smith has definitely struggled in his two seasons with the Jets. He's compiled an 11-18 record as the starter, completing 57.5 percent of his passes and throwing only 25 touchdowns against 34 interceptions. He was benched in favor of Michael Vick at one point this season, after starting a game against the Buffalo Bills 2-of-8 with three interceptions. Smith returned to the starting lineup a few weeks later and was wholly ineffective until the regular season finale against the Dolphins.

The Jets have the sixth pick in this year's NFL Draft and could be looking at one of the top two quarterback prospects, Oregon's Marcus Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winston.

Former Jets QB coach rips Geno Smith: His play ‘killed us’

Former Jets quarterbacks coach David Lee pointed the finger for the Jets’ struggles in the last two years at his pupil Geno Smith.

Lee, now the Bills quarterbacks coach under former Jets coach Rex Ryan, told the Bills’ website the Jets played good enough defense to win games the last two years — the team went 8-8 and 4-12, respectively — but Smith doomed them.

“Rex and I talked about it, he had some inconsistency, and the up-and-down part is what killed us,” Lee said of Smith. “He would get loose with the football. We played good enough defense to win over there both years, but his play it’ll cost you and it cost us. But he also did some great things. The last five games this season he was the seventh-rated passer in the league. He had a perfect passer rating in his last game at Miami. The potential and ability is there.”

Now, Lee will try to turn around EJ Manuel, who was drafted a round ahead of Smith in 2013, and has had his share of struggles. Lee praised Manuel’s pre-draft work with the Jets, saying he did better on a test Lee administered than any other quarterback in that draft, including Smith.

“We flew him in before the draft and I gave him a test,” Lee said. “I gave him a pamphlet to study and told him I was going to test him the next morning. It was long and detailed and he aced it. He didn’t miss anything. No other quarterback that came in did that, but he did.”

Former Jets QBs coach David Lee: Geno Smith's mistakes 'killed us'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- David Lee, who rarely spoke to the media during his two seasons as the New York Jets' quarterbacks coach, came out with gums blazing in his new job with Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills.

Speaking to the Bills' official website at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Lee -- hired last week -- was critical of Geno Smith for his erratic play.

“Rex and I talked about it. He had some inconsistency, and the up-and-down part is what killed us,” Lee said. “He would get loose with the football. We played good enough defense to win over there both years, but his play, it’ll cost you and it cost us. But he also did some great things. The last five games this season he was the seventh-rated passer in the league. He had a perfect passer rating in his last game at Miami. The potential and ability is there.”

Smith finished with a 97.9 passer rating over the final five games, ahead of stars such as Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. But in the first 11 games ... well, Smith played so poorly that he got benched in favor of Michael Vick. Overall, Smith finished 29th in passer rating, with a 77.5 mark.

Smith was a tough project for Lee, who had to teach him a pro-style offense. Because of Mark Sanchez's preseason injury in 2013, Smith was rushed into the starting lineup and wasn't ready for it.

Now Lee has a new pupil, EJ Manuel, a former first-round pick whose career is heading south. Manuel and Smith were drafted the same year, 2013.

“We flew him in before the draft and I gave him a test,” Lee said of Manuel. “I gave him a pamphlet to study and told him I was going to test him the next morning. It was long and detailed and he aced it. He didn’t miss anything. No other quarterback that came in did that, but he did.”

Based on his two seasons with Buffalo,.EJ is apparently good at pamphlets and turnovers and otherwise, not so hot..maybe even.worse than Geno

I wanted EJ Manuel over Geno Smith. I saw Geno play alot in college through watching Big 12 games and he never came off as one of those high ranked QB's to me. Yeah he had good stats but if you watched him he was overrated. The main game that made me second guess him was his game against Texas Tech. He struggles with the elements (wind).

E.J. Manuel is worse than Geno Smith. Not saying much but Geno Smith is extremely inconsistent and struggles. At least he did get bench for a QB like Orton who is now retired. Not saying Bowles can potentially change his bad habits, but Bowles is not going to bad mouth his quarterback. I expect both Bowles and Macc to look at potential quarterback options

We are in the worst QB year for free agents. Drafting a QB may not be an option for us until maybe the 2nd or 3rd round.
Sanchez will end up on Rex's other arm wearing blue. Bradford may be available via trade, but his injury history is not a good one.
RG3 Kirk Cousins and Nick Foles may be long shots via trade depending on Chip Kelly mortgaging the team's future to land Mariota.
If Mariota is there at 6, boy would I have a field day with the Eagles.

Don't you think the Jets should take Mariota if he's there at 6?
