Will Cromartie sign with Cards, or Jets?

Will Antonio Cromartie re-sign with Arizona Cardinals?

by Nick Ziegler 2h ago

This past season, the Arizona Cardinals looked to have a real shot at being a team to not only host the Super Bowl, but to also play in it. Injuries to Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton ultimately kept them from reaching the big game, but a strong defense was a major contributor to keeping them competitive without a quarterback.

Now with the offseason beginning the Cardinals do have a few things to address. One of those issues is trying to re-sign cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who was an important part of the Cardinals’ defense.

Cromartie was brought in as a free agent last season from the New York Jets on a reasonable one-year deal worth $3.5 million as a hip injury made him a bit of a question mark heading into the 2014 season. Cromartie earned every penny of that with the Cardinals. He totaled 40 tackles, three interceptions, 12 passes defended, and one fumble recovery.

All told, 2014 was certainly a good one for Cromartie. He ranked as the Cardinals’ best cornerback by Pro Football Focus, which is saying a lot on a team that has Patrick Peterson, one of the top corners in the NFL (and certainly paid like it). Cromartie was named to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time and during his time in Glendale he was asked about his possible return to the Cardinals.

“I would like to, but like I’ve said before, I’m always going to keep the door open,” he said. “And that’s just me. I’m going into my 10th year, coming up this year, and I want to make sure I keep my options open not only for me, but also for my family and make sure that it’s understandable for them and it’s reasonable for the family.”

The Cardinals’ defense has already suffered one big hit this offseason. Defensive coordinator Todd Bowles was hired by the New York Jets to become their head coach next season after turning the Cardinals into one of the best defenses in the NFL.

Cromartie was a far better cornerback under Bowles than in 2013, which was a year that he was also hampered by a hip injury. Under Bowles, Cromartie allowed five less touchdown passes and almost 200 less yards through the air. He was a nice fit with the Cardinals.

The Jets will once again have a lot of cap space this offseason, and they will also need to get some cornerback to help their secondary that was one of the worst in football. With a new regime leading New York, Bowles could very well be reuniting with Bowles and the Jets in 2015.

There is a very real possibility that Cromartie could be heading elsewhere. As we documented, 2014 was a good year for him and one that should be able to land him a multi-year deal. Cardinals general manager Steve Keim has done a good job with finding players like Cromartie at low prices and taking a shot with them.

He very well may be doing that to replace Cromartie if the Cardinals opt not to bring back the veteran defender.

Do the Jets go after Cromartie this off season? I think it's a no brainer.

Question is what kind of contract do they offer him? Unlike last year there will be more then one team interested. Who knows, maybe the Bills will be interested to.

Cro is 30 YO, and will be looking for his last payday. It won't be cheap like it could have been last year. He is off a Pro Bowl year, and will be looking for a multi year deal, not a one year "lets see what he's got left" contract.

Are we interested? (I am) If so what do we offer him? (3years 16 million 8 guaranteed)

When we let him go it was the right decision. He was hurt and played like garbage. He is healthy now and only 30 which is not that old when you don't actually play tackle football so he has 2-3 years left I would bet. He is better than anything we have so I would take him plus he knows the system.

Got to disagree. He was replaced by Patterson, who is ALWAYS hurt, and not very good when he is healthy. If you are going to play a guy with health issues, why not go with a guy who has been to the Pro Bowl 3 times. Not a guy who has been on 7 NFL teams because he sucks

He's 1 year older then Revis, ok 15 months older I guess he's lining up his next 3 teams that offer him the most money each year?? Or maybe he likes playing on a team with a REAL QB and stays to help Brady keep his balls nice to touch..:)

Because they tried to replace him with his cousin DRC. Just so happens Patterson was the only choice left.

I don't think Jets are contenders this year so not a fan of older FAs...26 or younger to build for future

interesting view.. but things can/do change so quickly in the NFL year to year now.. if the jets resign cro to say a 3 year deal i would like to think we can be competitive in year two & three.. hell, maybe sooner..

i'll say it again.. if bowles wants cro back i think it gets done.. plus as we all know the jets literally have to spend big money this coming off season with or without cro back in the fold..

Cromartie said on First Take that if the Jets want him then he will come. Would you guys want him back and what's the contract look like?

My thinking is that Geno or the new QB is gonna need the run game to be the main weapon like Seattle and a very strong D...the money needs to be for players that can be at their peak in 2016 or 17

Cro never wanted to leave the Jets. I know for a fact. And I also know why DRC snubbed us for the Giants. You guessed it, Idzick and his dealings with Cro.
If Idzick just gave Cro a deal, DRC would've signed in a heartbeat.
Thank Idzick for that gaff.

Antonio Cromartie would be open to Jets reunion, per report. Should they pursue him?

Antonio Cromartie is open to returning to the Jets after a season with the Cardinals. For the second straight offseason, the Jets need significant help at the cornerback position.

So, should the Jets pursue Cromartie, who played for them from 2010-13?

There is no easy answer to that question.

First, via the New York Post, let's take a look at what Cromartie said out there in Arizona on Wednesday, during Super Bowl week activities:

"My door is always open to returning. Everybody knows I didn't want to leave. I'm going to keep my door open and see what happens."

The Jets' new head coach, Todd Bowles, used to be Arizona's defensive coordinator. Cromartie enjoyed his season playing in Bowles' scheme.

Here's what Cromartie said about it, again via the Post:

"It's fun, to be honest with you. He's a big-time guy that has a true open-door policy. If you don't like something that's going into the defense, you can always go talk to him and he will throw it out. He's all about his guys ... playing fast and understanding that the simple is easy. That's really what it's all about for him."

OK, so should the Jets bring Cromartie back when he becomes a free agent in March?

SUPER BOWL XLIX: Full coverage of Patriots vs. Seahawks

Bowles had a positive experience with Cromartie, and Bowles made it clear in his introductory press conference that he needs good corners to run his defense.

Let's examine a few factors in a potential Cromartie-Jets reunion:

• He will turn 31 in April, so he is not a long-term solution. The nagging hip injury that limited him in 2013, when he was one of the NFL's worst cornerbacks, didn't bother him last season in Arizona. He played and started all 16 games, and had three interceptions -- the same number as he had in 2012 and 2013.

• Cromartie was better in 2014 than 2013, but his best days still appear behind him. Pro Football Focus rated him the NFL's 45th-best corner in 2014, including 45th in coverage ratings, as well.

• There will be other corners who might be more attractive to Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan, who plans to be "very active" in free agency. Among the other noteworthy cornerbacks who are scheduled to become free agents in March: Tramon Williams, Kareem Jackson, Brandon Flowers, Byron Maxwell and Devin McCourty, of Rutgers, unless the Patriots apply the franchise tag to him. Remember, not all of those guys are guaranteed to hit free agency. Some could re-sign.

• But Cromartie would come cheap. When the Jets cut him after 2013, they saved $9.5 million in salary cap space. GM John Idzik decided not to bring Cromartie back on a reduced-rate deal, even though Cromartie would've been open to it. Cromartie got a one-year, $3.5 million contract from Arizona, with $3.25 million guaranteed. The Jets are going to have more than $40 million in cap space, so Cromartie wouldn't break the bank.

Again, Cromartie is coming off an improved year, but he wouldn't be a future fix-all for the Jets' secondary. They still need to hope for progress from corners Dee Milliner and Dexter McDougle, coming off serious injuries, as they enter their third and second seasons, respectively.

Not that the Jets can afford to be picky, as they address their cornerback situation this time around. They select sixth in the draft, and there aren't any corners who warrant being chosen that high. So it'll likely be the free agent route for the Jets.

McCourty and Maxwell seem like really good, young options. They are both coming off their rookie contracts. But their current teams probably also see them as really good, young options. There are no guarantees either player hits the free agent market. Ditto for Jackson, a 2010 first-round pick by Houston who was rated 11th last season by PFF, including seventh in coverage ratings.

The Jets, at cornerback, are perhaps even more desperate this offseason than last. They are scheduled to enter 2015 with just four cornerbacks under contract: Milliner, McDougle, Marcus Williams and Darrin Walls.

Milliner played just 16 combined games in his first two seasons, because of injuries, including a torn Achilles tendon in 2014. McDougle missed all of his rookie year, 2014, with a knee injury. Williams was an undrafted rookie last year who was forced into a starting role by attrition. Walls is a career backup who, for the most part, has played like just that.

I go after Kareem Jackson full court press. If Cro is willing to sign a similar deal as he did with the Cards, I sign him. Tops 3 year contract, 5 million top money.

Neither Dee Milliner or Dexter McDougle can be counted on at all. Milliner is off an Achilles injury. A very bad injury for a CB. No guarantees he will ever be able to play again. He really wasn't playing well when he was hurt.

McDougle? Who knows? He was playing fairly well last summer, but it is 2 years since he has played football. Who knows what he's got. If anything.

Jets need to bring in two starter type CB's and let McDougal and Milliner try and take their jobs
