Check out the latest article by Sam looking into the various options the Jets have for a QB in the upcoming season.

The New York Jets haven’t had a steady quarterback at the helm since Ken O’Brien in the early Eighties. However, things are on the up in New York, with the new regime in place there may be a chance that we will find our quarterback of the future. Geno Smith and Matt Simms will more than likely be returning next season, but who will join them? Here are some of the options:
Smith/Simms/Glennon
Mike Glennon was drafted in Round 3 of the draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013, he was the third quarterback taken behind Smith and Manuel. He has not been able to grab the starting spot yet during his time in Tampa, mainly due to his inconsistency. This has led to many people linking him with the Jets. Glennon is not out of contract in 2015; this means it will probably cost the Jets a Sixth Round pick. He is another young unproven player, there has been no evidence of him being able to become a consistent player during his 18 starts for the Bucs.
Smith/Simms/Mariota
Marcus Mariota’s stock in this year’s draft has dropped considerably since the college play-offs. This has led to many Draft experts expecting him to drop to the number 6 pick or even below. The main problem with Mariota is if he can perform consistently in the Pros, especially after not running a Pro-style offense with Oregon. On the other hand, Mariota was the 2014 Heisman trophy winner and the stats back this up, throwing for 4,454 Yards and a staggering 42 Touchdowns with only 4 interceptions.
Smith/Simms/Foles
It was a disappointing 2014 season for Foles, he was unable to recreate his form of the previous year, his season ended due to injury after just 8 games. 2013 was an incredible year for Foles throwing 27 Touchdowns (which included 7 Touchdowns against the Raiders) and just 2 interceptions. However, Chip Kelly seems to have lost faith in Foles after this season. With the Eagles very keen on Mariota, could the Jets trade away pick number 6 for Foles and some more picks? This is a very interesting option, especially if Foles can find his 2013 form.
Smith/Simms/Petty
Bryce Petty is a very intriguing prospect coming out of Baylor in this year’s draft. He is predicted to be taken in the second round by most of the draft experts, if he is still available when the 37th pick comes along, there is no reason why the Jets shouldn’t give Petty a call. This would be a very interesting competition with Smith likely to still be the starter in Week One. However, If the Jets drafted Petty they would have a good project in him to build on for the future.
Smith/Simms/Hundley
Brett Hundley would be another project just like Petty. Hundley has drawn criticism from the NFL scouting community, mainly for his accuracy and his instincts as a pocket passer; Hundley's play from the pocket has also come under scrutiny for taking too many sacks due to him holding onto the ball too long. He took 10 sacks from Utah this season and has absorbed 123 sacks in his UCLA career. This being said, if he had a year to learn the system under Chan Gailey he could become a good starter in the NFL. In 2014, he threw for 3,115 Yards, 22 Touchdowns and 5 Interceptions.
Smith/Simms/Daniel
Chase Daniel has been a Quarterback in the NFL since 2009 when he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints. Daniel has only started 2 games in his 6 seasons, which makes him an unknown commodity. He was impressive as the backup for Alex Smith in Kansas City last season; this could lead to the Jets taking a risk trading for Daniel, which would probably cost them a late round pick. There is no doubt Daniel deserves a chance to compete for a starting job in the NFL but is it with the Jets?
Smith/Simms/Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick has been a journeyman since joining the league in 2006, which has led to him playing for Five teams in Ten years. With the Jets hiring Chan Gailey as their new offensive coordinator, this may open a window for Ryan Fitzpatrick who worked with Gailey in Buffalo. 2012 was the final year for both Fitzpatrick and Gailey in Buffalo, the quarterback threw 24 Touchdowns and 16 interceptions, which was seven interceptions fewer than the previous season. In Gailey’s offense Fitzpatrick looked like a legitimate quarterback. He is currently under contract with the Houston Texans, it would probably cost the Jets a late round pick to acquire Fitzpatrick. Would he be a good starter for the Jets in 2015?
Smith/Simms/McCoy
By McCoy’s standards it was a very impressive season for the inconsistent quarterback. He replaced Kirk Cousins late into the season and leading the Skins into a win over the Cowboys. He failed to win his next 3 starts, until an injury gave the starting place back to Robert Griffin III. McCoy had a very good College career winning the MVP award in all of his 4 seasons for the Texas Longhorns. He never hit it off in Cleveland, after only starting 21 games he was cut, later signing with the 49ers. His main issue has been in protecting the football, shown by him having 11 Fumbles in just 13 games, in 2011.
Other options: Jake Locker, TJ Yates, Zac Dysert, Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallet.
I feel that the Jets best chance of success under center, comes in the name of Bryce Petty; he has definite potential and has proved himself to be a very talented quarterback. If the Jets think they could steal him in the second round this would open many options with the Sixth Pick.
