On that note, Marshall may shake free in Chicago. I wonder if he'd be a player Gaily would want...

I just think McCown would be an interesting variable to add into the decision at QB. I could see McCown brought in as a mentor. Could you see McCown brought in to push for starter vs Geno and mentor Mariota for a year? Im not saying we get more than 8 wins with that group, probably best case scenario. But if you want a mentor working with Gaily and the kids, he may not be a bad pick.

Disagree on the whole mentoring concept

We need QBs actually capable of playing successfully in the NFL.

Right now, assuming Vick is gone soon, we have one who absolutely can't and never will, Smith and one who never got a chance and who we know zero about in Simms.

We need to bring in a reasonable vet FA who can maybe play well enough to hold the fort

And we need to draft either Mariota if he miraculously falls to 6

Or more likely draft a mid round kid, maybe 2 like Grayson or Petty who might become an NFL QB

Then let the vet, the rook, the bust and Simms legitimately compete with the three obvious winners (rook, vet and Simms) on the roster in 2015 and Smith voted off the island and sent packing

I can agree with this. I say the Jets don't get Winston obviously but the wild-card is Mariota. If he is still available at #6 what do the Jets do? Whether the Jets draft Mariota or a QB in the 5th-6th round and signs a vet FA, Geno needs to be placed in true competition with all of them and may the best man win. Only thing is drafting Mariota means, the Jets have no faith in Geno anymore IMO. If the Jets draft Mariota I'm cool with it but they better fill all other need positions in free agency (mostly) and the draft. Like signing a big time free agent WR (Dez or Thomas) and CB (Revis or Maxwell) for example.
don't worry, there is zero chance the new regime just hands smith the job..

Josh McCown may be this year’s best free-agent quarterback

Here’s everything you need to know about how bad this year’s class of free-agent quarterbacks is: Josh McCown may be the best quarterback on the market.

McCown, who was cut by the Buccaneers on Wednesday, moves to the top of a list that may not have a single player on it who will be a Week One starter.

Mark Sanchez has generally been considered the top quarterback in this year’s class, which isn’t saying much. Sanchez was OK in Chip Kelly’s Eagles Offense after Nick Foles went down last year, but Sanchez was a disaster at the end of his tenure with the Jets, and it’s hard to believe that any team would make him its starter this year.

Brian Hoyer has also shown promise at times, but if he couldn’t hold onto the starting job in Cleveland in 2014, is any team going to hand him its starting job in 2015? Hoyer’s best bet might be to return to Cleveland and try to win a training camp competition with Johnny Manziel.

Ryan Mallett might be the most talented free agent quarterback in this year’s class, but we have no idea if his arm talent really translates to being a good NFL quarterback. Mallett started just two games in Houston last season before a pectoral injury cut short his season.

Colt McCoy provided a bit of a spark in Washington last season and now becomes a free agent, but McCoy’s biggest accomplishment was being better than Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins. And that’s not much of an accomplishment.

Michael Vick is a free agent, but it’s been a long time since Vick looked like a franchise quarterback. He had a terrible 68.3 passer rating with the Jets last year.

Jake Locker, Christian Ponder and Blaine Gabbert all become free agents in March because all of them were first-round picks in 2011 and none of their fifth-year options were picked up. If the teams that drafted them don’t want them anymore, why would any other team?

Going through that list of quarterbacks, is there anyone you can say is definitely better than McCown? The fact that teams are showing interest says less about McCown than about the lack of good quarterbacks available.

McCown was very good a year ago here in Chicago. Tampa was a mess last year--can't read too much in his results there. That said, he's a journeyman, and that's his ceiling. He'd be a decent veteran stop-gap/mentor to bring in if we also drafted someone we intend to groom for a year or two.

if we're not getting Bradford or Foles, I dont see the downside of adding him over Sanchez or Hoyer...because mcCown, Sanchez, and Hoyer are the next 3 best QBs after bradford and foles who may not even be available.

its not like a young Tom Brady is sitting around, though it's funny people flush these ideas like there are.

Why would Tampa release McCown, and keep Glennon with Winston. That's a young qb core that usually spells trouble with maturity

I think they trade Glennon.

then they'd have no QBs on their roster. now obviously they can take whoever they want with the #1 pick, and i assume they will take winston. but to me, mccown seemed like the QB to keep and mentor/hold the fort until winston was ready.

Maybe they have someone else in mind for that role. Mike Vick is a FA...

Ha. They have no insurance at the most important position. Maybe the think he's overpaid and they can re sign him or a comparable veteran for less money.

Kirk Cousins - QB - Redskins
The Browns offered a fourth-round pick for Kirk Cousins last offseason but the Redskins were looking for a second-rounder.
We're not sure who this looks worse for: the Redskins for thinking Cousins was worth a second-round pick or Cleveland for standing pat with Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer. Cousins didn't help his trade value by underperforming in 2014. With that said, former Redskins and current Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan has always been one of Cousins' biggest supporters. If the Redskins want to unload Cousins, Atlanta could look to stash him as a backup for Matt Ryan.

Biased on Cousins. Didn't think he was any good at East Lansing. Still don't

yeah I am not a believer in Cousins either, at this point I don't know who to believe in but lets get 4 or 5 QBs on the roster and battle
