The historic offer that could keep Jamal Adams at center of Jets future

The bottom line for Jets general manager Joe Douglas: Show Jamal Adams the money or not show Jamal Adams the money.

The bottom line will be arriving in the offseason, with Adams under contract through the 2020 season and Douglas shopping for a new wall in front of Sam Darnold, a cornerback or two, a pass rusher and a wide receiver.

Douglas, who already has procured a third-rounder and a fifth-rounder that could become a fourth-rounder for Leonard Williams if the Giants sign him, will need all the draft capital he can get.

Adams would fetch a bounty.

Douglas will have to ask himself: Can I afford to build around a safety or not?

Then he should ask Gregg Williams.

Then he should ask Adam Gase.

Then he should ask Adams’ teammates.

He won’t have to ask Christopher Johnson. The owner seems to love Adams.

When you have so many other holes to fill, it does not usually make sense … or cents … to build around a safety.

But this safety you build around.

Show him the money.

It doesn’t matter to me whether Douglas will be shopping his most valuable assets or simply fielding calls about them, it would have to be an offer no one in his right mind could possibly refuse for me to part ways with Jamal Adams:

Leader. Captain. Heart and Soul. Playmaker. Lethal Weapon. Alpha dog. Durable. Jet From Day 1. Twenty-four years old.

Revis won one without us... :argh:
Two guys on our team get mega-hyped by media and fans: Adams and Darnold. I think Adams is more deserving than Darnold.

My problem with building around Adams is that this team has so many gaps, holes and outright chasms on both sides of the ball to focus on just one player. By the time we get enough impact players on D around him (two, three, four years?), Adams skill set will most likely be diminished from the wear and tear of the position and how intensely he plays it. We need tons of players and dealing Adams for draft picks makes more sense to me.

eh, not really because you need talent scouts to acquire those prospects with those picks and for whatever reason we have bombed the last 8 drafts with reaches... yes we took the best player available in some drafts and we acquired some good players but in the end when you strike gold on one, two or three you try to keep those and build around those guys...

Jamal Adams is only 23, he has at least another 6 years before he starts to decline (tenacity wise) and is still a physical run defender with coverage skills like Troy Polamalo who played exactly how Adams is now and he lasted a long time...

Finding gems also helps, while we have struck gold with a few rookie free agents over the last decade...

actually, i remember polamalo making plays in space..

look the guy is a beast in the box.. we all get that.. regardless of the PFF stats that have him being an animal in space, he's pedestrian there at best.. seen him get lost multiple times by TE's in coverage..

if douglas can turn adams into a 10 year starter at left tackle, please do..

I've been saying this about Adams since last season. Guy can hit, no doubt. But I've seen him get beat in coverage a lot.

I like Adams, I really do. The question we should be asking IMO is he a luxury a Team like the Jets can afford at this stage of the game? They do have a lot of holes on the Roster and we all know throwing money at it never really works. Would you pay Jamal 15 mil per? Because I believe that is what he will be looking for. I do believe Adams is going to want that money soon too. Maybe even this coming off-season. Could a lengthy holdout be in his future? I hope not. Trading Adams will bring a ton of picks our way but those are never a sure thing either. Its going to be a slippery slope with this decision. Glad I don't have to make it.

Losing Adams, who might get beat ocassionally, that's bad because nobody else ever does, to get a couple of picks, guys that probably won't be able to bring anything to the table that he does, just doesn't make sense to me. He's not just a good player who's only 23 years old and getting better all the time he's a good team mate, locker presence, teacher, "D" line leader along with Mosley, who is out likely for the season, and complete moral booster. Not only do I agree with keeping him I also think they should get a deal done as soon as possible before the price goes up more. The more good players we dump to get draft picks, that may or may not pan out, the more holes we create that need to be filled. Yes, it's not normal to build around a safety but that's what we have, that and a promising QB and slot receiver. It doesn't make sense to throw away sure things to get more maybe things. I was pretty good at math in school and getting rid of a star player in a position you don't have to replace just doesn't add up to me. I know you young guys learned math differently than us old farts but different doesn't always mean right.

yeah, box safeties with diva WR personalities are not in that kind of demand..

the team, well GM believes he is the best player on the team and if a team wants him they going to pay the price and I am okay with that.

and nowadays a lot of the top dogs in the league have diva personalities...

guarantee this if a team offered a 2020 1st and lets say a 4th in 2021 he would not be here but to be offered a pick that is worthless to us this year is worthless to this regime to give up a player of his caliber and have to wait to use that pick...

yes I am aware there is a chance that the Jets could use that pick to maybe vault back into the first round this year or combine it with our current first to move up, wasn't the point I was making...

Love it. 2 weeks ago Adams was trash and everyone wanted him gone, now he is the Messiah.
The front office knows his value, they just shoped him at the trade deadline. Only question now is do they want to pay him and will he agree to what they offer. They still control his rights for 2 more years, first round pick so the Jets can pick up his 5th year option. Don't think the franchise tag survives the new CBA or they would have had 4 years. There's bad blood between Adams and the FO right now. Negotiations could be messy. Will be fun to watch. Let's see how much "Love" Adams really has for the Jets and coach Gase.

He is one of the only stars we have. Offer him a fair deal now, average of top 3 safeties in the league. He can afford to take a bit less in exchange for having his money guaranteed against injury next year. If he won't take the deal, trade him ASAP for anything more than a first, before we lose leverage.

Ok IMO He is like LT in that he is not a complete safety (how many INT's did LT have) but he can effect a game at his best. He is a box safety that should be kept in his box at this point...no where else should he be allowed except on a rare coverage or two. Again, he really is a LB/safety.

Ok the problem I have is with his head Flags are a concern & stupid plays....will he get over it...maybe.

So he is a plus but like Marshall when you look at the complete package he is not it. You could build a team around Revis & Larry Wilson but they were very good all around players......I got to say that both were the best I have ever seen nothing against Patrick P on AZ but he is not even close to Revis.

So I agree with Bresford offer him a good package as a top six safety but that is it. Don't over pay....because it will bite us in the A__.

Look LT was amazing but in my opinion Bobby Bell was the best all around outside LB ever...…He could rush, defend against the pass & run & int the ball... LT was a rusher & good vs the run. In fact the LB for Baltimore was better as an all around LB...Saw him later with oakland return a onside kick for a TD A beast

If Adams does get traded, wouldn't it be smart to get a top player at a need position instead of a draft pick. Denver (RB Portis, I believe) was traded to Washington for a an All Pro Safety 15 or 20 years ago. The Saints traded there All World TE to Seatlle for a Center and Draft picks. Whats our biggest need position (LT, C, CB, ER)?

All the above but if we get an edge rusher it would knock Adams need down a little
