The Jets have recently started to finish up their hiring of the FO and coaching staff. Some of the signings when it comes to the new coaches and the FO have people very excited! Now for Jets fans who have followed this team their whole lives…this is scary. In fact to see not only beat writers but national NFL reporters praise the new GM and Head coach on their additions to the staff, is downright apocalyptic.

For the first time in a very long time the New York Jets have a coach that not only has his own defensive system that’s successful (Go watch the last season where the Cardinals won games with their 3rd string QB) but is also able to adapt to the players. The main reason that Todd Bowles won Assistant Coach of the Year was due to his amazing ability to literally lose his best players and adapt to that and still win games. The reason I say win games even though he was only the defensive coordinator is due to that fact that he was able to have his defense score when his offense could not and literally won games for them. Bowles in his own right is a defensive back. This is a positive thing for a Jets defense that is majorly lacking when it comes to their secondary. Todd Bowles hired a few coordinators and position coaches that made members of the NFL media turn their heads and praise the Jets.

The first move for Todd Bowles was hiring former Bills HC Chan Gailey as their offensive coordinator (OC). Many people may begin to question this signing due to his record as a HC but there is a huge thing you must remember Jets fans…HE WAS ABLE TO MAKE RYAN FITZPATRICK, KORDELL STEWART, AND TYLER THIGPEN LOOK LIKE TRUE STARTING QB’S. Tyler Thigpen looked like a franchise QB, that in itself should make you jump for joy. Another thing that you should realize, Gailey like Bowles has an amazing ability to adapt to the players that he has. He looks at the roster and figures a way to enhance the players not just try to fit them into his own personal system.

The next 3 signings really should get fans excited. The Jets announced the signings of Kacy Rogers as the defensive coordinator (DC), Bobby April as special teams coach, and Pepper Johnson as defensive line coach. These signings were the best guys the Jets could possibly get. Pepper Johnson, who once played for the Jets was in the running to become the DC for the New York Giants and when the Giants went elsewhere HOF coach Bill Parcells came out and said they made a huge mistake. Kacy Rogers who was the Miami Dolphins D-line coach had one of the best d-lines in the NFL that truly scared a lot of NFL offenses. The biggest signing was Bobby April as the Jets special teams coach. This signing literally had the NFL go crazy for a couple hours. He was the best option out there for the Jets to sign and they made their move. This coaching staff that Bowles has assembled is very interesting and will be exciting to see what they decide to do with this team.

Next is the front office with new General Manager, Mike Maccagnan. Adding him to the front office is a very positive signing by the Jets. He is well known personnel guy. That’s the key to the reasoning of this being a very good signing. For the past couple GM’s the Jets have always hired a guy that was good with the cap and not one that is able to truly dive into the draft and find the diamonds in the rough, and that has been a problem for the Jets. There is a very big lack of talent coming in from the draft even when picked in the higher rounds. Some very big notable failures by these GM’s are Kyle Wilson (1st round), Stephen Hill (2nd round), Dee Milliner (1st round), and finally the one and only Vernon Gholston (6th overall). These examples just go to show that this team needs a FO that knows players not just money. Luckily Mike Maccagnon knew exactly what fans wanted and what he should do. Just a week into the job he fired Terry Bradway. Bradway who was once the Jets GM and survived two…yes, TWO GM changes was finally fired.

To replace him and other firings Macc hired two young and talented personnel guys. The Jets recently named Brian Heimerdinger as director of player personnel. Heimerdinger has been in the NFL for six years as a scout for the St. Louis Rams. The Jets also hired Rex Hogan as the senior director of college scouting. “He worked as director of football operations under head coach Urban Meyer for the University of Utah in 2003 and was with Notre Dame from 1998-2003, the last four seasons in recruiting and operations for the Fighting Irish.” (Newyorkjets.com) These two hirings have been praised up and down from reporters all over the NFL. For Jets fans this truly should be getting you excited!

All that can be said now is that the Jets have entered this offseason making the right moves. They have put together what looks to be a very good coaching staff and front office. Now the largest test for the Macc and Bowles era is coming up soon. The moves that will be made in free agency and in the draft will begin to show the plans this new coaching staff and FO have for this team. Sadly Jets fans we will just have to sit and wait to see what they decide to do with players they have and players they could get.

The best thing so far has to be Mac cleaning house and brining in two new up and coming guys to replace dumb and dumber

I am as optimistic and excited as anyone. The funny thing about the off season is fans of all teams are sure their teams are improving also. I think we are on the right track and are building a winner but I want to see it before I can truly relax.

I am optimistic, as well, but I have been about other regimes. This particular pairing seems more...professional.

That said, I would disagree with labeling Milliner a bust already. To me, that is painfully premature.

i think jet fans as a whole really like the pairing of mac & bolwes & the staff that's been put together.. some aren't as excited (i was rooting for it) about gailey but everyone seems to understand why bolwes wanted the guy as his OC..

hope you're right about millner.. between him & mcdougle i'll take what i can get at this point..

Milliner blew out his Achilles. That is a major injury for a CB. Milliner can't be counted on. Jets have to move forward as if he is a bust. If he recovers, and actually plays well, great, but for now can't depend on him for anything
