Ryan Tannehell Extension

Reports are Miami and Tannehell discussing 7 year $105 mill extension. Can't say I agree in giving a tier 3 or 4 qb that kind of money. If Brees, Brady, Manning, and Rodgers are tier 1 - rivers, ryan, big ben, flacco and Wilson are tier 2, then I have to think Tannehell remains tier 3 with Dalton and cam...

Miami being Miami

Its not just a case of miami being miami.

First off, its not going to be $105 with $40 guaranteed. Its going to be like dalton and kapernick where 2 years are guaranteed and thats it.

Secondly, what is that team supposed to do with tannenhill? Its an extremely difficult situation.

Personally i think his numbers dont tell the correct story, because while his completion % is great, he is unable to throw much past 20 yards or push the outside hashmarks. Can he improve on that - sure, but arm strength/deep accuracy is something that is very difficult to improve.

That being said if we got 66% 4000 yards and 27td with 12 picks it would be the best QB play the jets have had in 6 years.

Don't play chicken with mediocrity...he's a bottom 10-15 qb in the nfl, you don't reward that with 100 mill. I didn't agree with the kaepernick or Dalton deals either.

good. i hope they lock him up. they've already gone danny snyder mode in free agency. now they should compound it by giving a mediocre QB a big contract.

Mediocre? I see your point but if we had a qb who had a better than 2:1 td/int ratio and threw for 66% im pretty sure jets fans would be bowing to him.

With consecutive seasons with shots to get his team in the playoffs he's come up short at home twice to the Jets and once to the Bills; a franchise qb doesn't come up so small when his team needs him to come up big when he has NFL cup cakes sitting in front of them. Which franchise qb looks at the Jets and bills vs going to the playoffs and fold under the pressure like he does? Maybe Dalton and kaepernick, but even Cam rose up and thrashed atlanta to end the season and get his team in. I want a qB that rises, not folds. Phins can have him.

In fairness to Tannehill, it wasn't him giving Geno 5 seconds to go through his progressions when they played last game of season. The whole team was pretty execrable.

I agree with most what you said but he is only 26. I still see room for improvement. I would take him over geno anyday.

where would you rank him in terms of nfl QBs? top 5? top 10? top 15?

to me, he's somewhere around the 15 range. so maybe mediocre is too much a negative. maybe he's league average, or even slightly above average. to me, that's not worth a 7-year, $100MM+ contract.

Tannehill is a decent QB. But I would have a tough time keeping a straight face calling him a franchise QB. This is a reflection of how desperate teams have become finding even "decent".

The cost of a franchise tag for a QB going into the 2014 season was 16.2 million. It will probably go up to around 18 this year. Wonder what it will be in 7 years?

The 15 a year being paid to Tannerhill seems like a lot for Tannerhill, but as Eagle said they aren't stuck with that contract for 7 years. Most of the guaranteed money will probably be paid in the first 2-3 years. These big number contracts are never what they seem. Mostly for the agents ego. If he doesn't work out, they can start over.

Tannerhill has shown some good improvement over the last few years. QB's are certainly at a premium. If he plays well, they have a good deal.

If he sucks, or if they find a true franchise QB after 2-3 years they can have Tannerhill restructure, or release him.

Good deal for all parties.

1) Rodgers
2) Brady
3) P. Manning
4) Brees
5) Luck
6) Big Ben
7) Rivers
8) Wilson
9) Ryan
10) Romo

I dont feel he sniffs the top 10...remember Romo was the #1 rated QB last year with 34 TDs 9 INts and 70% comp...and i listed him at #1 0.

11) Joe Flacco
12) Eli Manning
13) Matt Stafford
14) Cam Newton
15) Tannehill I'd place him (this is exactly where I think he sits...but I would likely take Bridgewater over him too, but its not fair to say today Bridgewater is better, IMO).

Names I left off that could go up and down that list are kapernick and dalton...no, Im not in on Alex Smith...

While I dont disagree with your opinion of Tannenhill (he probably falls around 15-18 which is not necessarily a $100 Million player) the more important question is what would you do with him then?

If you disagree with the kapernick and dalton deals as well, would you have let them simply become unrestricted free agents? Because there is ZERO chance those guys would not have received comparable money in the open market.

Look - i agree, none of those guys are currently in the top 15, but what do you do. Let kap/dalton walk, get nothing in return and then draft someone? There is a far greater chance of finding a blaine gabbert (while also losing out on drafting a position player) then there is finding an aaron rogers at some point in the first round.

Being a GM with these middle of the road QBs is almost impossible. Even flacco - many people think his contract is the worst in the NFL, but in my opinion, $17 million for a guy who you know will have you at least in the hunt for 10 years is not too much to pay.

The good thing about NFL contracts is most of that money wont go to him.

The issue IMO is not whether he is better than Smith. He and 30 other starters and probably 17-20 backups and at least 5 draft eligible college juniors and seniors are ALL guys you, me, and anybody who has watched a game would take over Smith

The real point is simple....Tannenbaum takes over and starts throwing out those Suckchez and Holmes style long term deals with guarantees to players who should probably be on one year leashes. In this case it is particularly true since it's probably almost odds on that Regis Philbin gets sacked by Rosso the Clown at the end of another mediocre season in 2015. Tanny should probably have them in cap hell by then too

I think it shows how desperate teams are for qb's, look at the jets, when you have different starters every other year your team has no chance. Stability and dependability even at the risk of upside, sets you up to be able to build a competitive team. They're looking at the same Market we are, and none of those top qb's are ever going to see free agency.

15m per for the QB isn't bad especially with cap going up....but Phins have to have opt out clause
