Joe is building for the future

Joe is building for the future....but if you think about it he may be building for another coach/QB.

After crazy eyes blows this next season - which he probably will, he will be fired. Darnold will be done with year 3 with little more progress and that puts the Jets in a decision year on his contract. My guess is Joe is signed for 6 with the thought he could always pick the next coach and QB.

2021 - loaded team with new rookie QB and coach is my bet. Eagles, Ravens, Rams, KC, this is how it is done folks - only way this doesnt happen is if Gase gets us to playoffs and realistically does anyone think this is going to happen between away games on the west coast, buffalo, and the pats?

My thought on Gase is this - he was never brought here to be the HC to take this team to a title. He was brought here to make Sam Darnold a franchise QB. Once he has done that, he will likely be jettisoned for someone with the resume to take the Jets' organization over the top with an established Darnold as the face of the franchise.

I'm not one to dismiss Gase without seeing how the team performs with a better roster. We had no OL, CBs or legitimate pass rush threat, yet still managed to win 7 games. We play almost the entire season with our 4th and 5th string ILBs and CBs off the street. This isn't excuses, just reality. I'm hopeful Gase is successful, otherwise we go through another year or two of transition and more misery.

The good news is, I do think Douglas is here to stay. Now, that may mean Gase is, as well, but Douglas is likely to lead this franchise for years and years.

I tend to agree. If Douglas has a reasonably good off season with not a lot of cap to work with and 2 tons of holes to fill he will have a long tenure with the Jets and rightfully so. Nobody in their right mind expects realistically that he will fix everything with one off season, but, if he can make a big improvement that will be something to rave about.

Yep - and that is why next season will be scary. Team will be much better talent wise - but even a halfway competent coach would have a hard time making a playoff run given the west coast games and the division next season. Plus Sam will have to be ridiculously good to have staying power in one season. Otherwise who in their right mind is going to give him 130M in year 4. The other option is they go to year 5 option - but lets not kid ourselves - it starts to unravel and become a redskins/cousins situation at that point.

so what you're trying to say is that Gase is gonna be here forever...or atleast as long as Darnold

but why would we believe he can do this? he hasnt done anything yet. I know he hasnt had time to yet, so Im not complaining, but until he does something good, we cant count on miracles

Last quarter of 2018, he was the best QB in the league.

In the last half of 2019, when Darnold was healthy, he had a better passer rating that Brady or Aaron Rodgers, a better TD/INT ratio than Pat Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, and more total touchdowns than Mahomes and Russell Wilson.

That is all with limited weapons and zero offensive line.

That's why you should believe Sam Darnold can be, and is on his way to being, a franchise QB.

There are plenty of things about the Jets you can hate on. Their OL, their CBs, not a true #1 WR, no edge rusher. But hating on the QB just goes against all evidence.

I wish I could be more optimistic but I just look at how we played at QB against decent defenses. Yes, Sam did really well when playing crap teams - but anytime we played a team with half a defense it was a poor performance. Look at the Steelers, Bills (both), Jags, Ravens, Pats....all really bad games for Sam and offense. Comparing him to an end of life Brady and end of life Rodgers isnt fair. Compare him to Mahomes, Goff, Wentz, Allen, ... These are his contemporaries. If you compare him to Brady and Rodgers - compare him to their prime. I am not saying Sam is a bad quarterback entirely btw. I just dont think he will have a chance to demonstrate his ability under Gase and unfortunately timing is everything. By end of year three contractually they will have to make a decision on him and I dont think Gase offense will allow him to look good long term. I also think he may be broken by the end of year 3. Remember QB development is what really matters. Look at Stafford - was he really much better than Sanchez? Or did he have better development and personnel around him to get him to the place where he could be a consistant franchise player? Sam just doesnt have what he needs going into year 3. We have a coach with an unproven record in QB development, an oline in shambles and arguably 2 years out before being fixed, and we are missing a #1 and #2 WR.

If you think about it Sam should of been killing daniel jones comparisons this season even with mono if the coach, scheme, and personnel was halfway decent. Sam has much more talent and pedigree...but unlike Jones, Sam did not look as electric. The offense scheme and personnel held him back, and his coach was inflexible. What changes majorly in year 3? Oline will be better and maybe a new weapon....but still the same inflexible coach with a bad scheme and inability to develop talent.

Using that same mindset, why would you doubt that he can. It never hurts to be optimistic my friend..................................

I was talking about Douglass not having any time to prove anything either good or bad yet. not Darrnold. and I dont have anything against either. just saying, nothing makes my believe Douglas will be great until he does something great. but I sure hope he is/does

That is against :

Win- Giants 4-12 -ranked 25th defence
Win - Redskins 3-13 -27th defence
Win -Raiders 7-9 -19th defence traveling coast to coast
Lose- to the 2-14 Bengals Disgrace ( winless at the time)
Win -Dolphins 5-11 by 1 point -last ranked defence
Destroyed by the Ravens
Win vs Steelers with the 3rd QB
Beat the Bills (barely )with 2nd and 3rd sting players

Come on ,
I like Sam and hope he turns out but... He still has a lot to prove
Those stats are BS
And to compare him with those QBs is ridiculous

I have heard in the past that the numbers are the numbers, especially if the team has a bad record against a tough schedule. Now the numbers are thrown out because the schedule wasn't tough enough.

I'm not saying you are doing it, but it does seem like it's having it both ways. Either we factor in the schedule or we don't.

At this time............optimism is about all we have. This off season will show us what to expect from him as GM. His rep is good. He's spoken of highly by his peers. Guess we'll just have to wait it out and hope for the best.

LOL dont we have optimism every year - Same old Jets....

I hate this team. I hate googly eyes. I hate that I will watch yet another season...

Worst part is it has never been this bad. Between Parcels, Chad, Mangini/Farve, Rex.....We had very good years, even our bad years when Vinny tore the achiles, when chad busted the shoulder, when farve killed his bicep, when santonio went mad, they were all decent years - you could hold your head high and say we are a prof football team. Since then, we are pathetic. Made worse because while the Jets of old had many years like these, the internet did not exist and high def large tv's didnt put it on display for every to see every detail of the badness.

Jets would have luxury to go

WR (Jeudy, Ruggs, Lamb)
CB (Henderson)
EDGE (Chaisson)

with the 1st (11th) pick...

what's the most dire need...

for me it would come down to CB vs EDGE!
