NFL 2015 schedule release date

A Google search turned up April 17 as the release date for the NFL schedule for 2015. I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of this. But my question is, why is it so far in the future? Once the Superbowl is completed I think all the needed information is available. Plus I am sure the NFL uses software to produce the schedule, which it probably does in something like the blink of an eye.

So why the huge delay?

that's a good question. They know the opponents already. It all comes down to PR and there probably is some hole in the NFL news cycle they need to fill

That's what I am thinking. But I wonder if it could be something else. The NFL claims it needs the 2 weeks between the champ games and the SB. But I think that's a load of garbage.

The reason I am asking is that I'd like to plan some personal events that will happen during the season. It would be nice to know if the Jets are going to be busy on Monday or Thursday on any particular week.

Everything the NFL does is all about PR. 4/17 fill a gap between the combines and the draft

This is probably the answer.

Either that or Roger has to wait for Bob Kraft to come back from vacation to see if he approves

It not so easy putting a schedule together. So many factors are involved like trying to keep home games after Monday night games or not having 3 home or road games consecutively. Then you have stadium availability on the specific date the computer spits out. They work on something like 20 different models. If you can't schedule the game in, say Cleveland on that date, it throws the whole schedule out of wack it and you need to scrap it and start over.

Gotta love the NFL though. They make an event out of the schedule release and I have to admit that I'll be in front of the TV with a pad and paper the night of the 17th. It's silly but getting the schedule is important. It allows you to schedule your life for the last 4 months of the year for thing such as vacations and concert tix.

Got game tickets using Vividseats. Probably staying in London for a week before and returning the Monday after.

For some reason, the missus wants to make this road trip with me

The NFL is a multi-billion dollar industry. I would bet they have schedule-generation software, maintained by a team of programmers, that already has as inputs all relevant factors such as stadium availability for every stadium in the league on every day of the season. And as far as software complexity is concerned, relatively speaking generating a schedule is a piece of cake. I'm talking about comparing schedule-generation software with complex scientific calculation software. Or even comparing it with gaming software like the Madden series. I'd be willing to bet the NFL schedule-generation software runs virtually instantaneously. If it doesn't, the software programmers who produced it are taking the league for a ride.

I read last year that they generate something like 500 different schedule combinations. They narrow it down to a few and then they get together with the networks and decide on a final schedule.

Here's their crack team.

Or is that the team with a crack? All kidding aside, I think the complexity of schedule generation has nothing to do with the delay.

The NFL does a masterful job in spreading out key events to make the offseason every bit as interesting as the regular season. They sprinkle in a little combine action followed by the schedule release followed by FA followed by the draft followed by spring training. This is planned and properly executed from a business perspective. Then you have fantasy deadlines, preseason, cuts. Masterfully orchestrated when looking from afar.

You can gripe all you want but from their perspective, giving you everything at once doesn't sell anything. Keep that in mind. Money talks and this is no public service they have to provide when YOU want it.

Just busting RI. Your right I'm sure a lot of effort and forethought goes into this. Just couldn't resist

Yep. No doubt that explains it. Just wish I could schedule some events without fear of conflicting with a Jets game. First potential conflict would be Sept 10th. Just hope the NFL doesn't get the bright idea of having the Jets face the Pats that day.
