With the NFL scouting combine (Feb. 17-23) and free agency (March 10) approaching, we take a position-by-position look at the New York Jets as they head into the offseason:

Position: Linebacker

2014 snaps:
•David Harris: 99 percent
•Demario Davis: 99 percent
•Calvin Pace: 81 percent
•Quinton Coples: 68 percent
•Jason Babin: 45 percent
•Trevor Reilly: 6 percent
•IK Enemkpali: 4 percent

Harris
Key stat: The linebackers took some criticism for their pass coverage, but the numbers show it wasn't all that bad -- at least in the context of running-back receptions. The Jets allowed 68 catches, the fifth-fewest total in the league, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The yardage total (504) was seventh in the league.

Pending free agents: Harris (unrestricted), Nick Bellore (unrestricted), Jermaine Cunningham (unrestricted).

2015 cap hits (position rank):
•Coples: $2.8 million (No. 57)
•Pace: $2.25 million
•Davis: $1.7 million
•Babin: $1.625 million
•Mario Harvey: $660,000
•Enemkpali: $529,670
•Reilly: $524,212
•Chris Young: $435,000

Pace
Money matters: Pace and Babin each have a $250,000 option bonus before the start of the league year, March 10. We're not talking big money, but the issue is whether the new regime wants to start with a linebacking corps that includes a couple of 34-year-olds. The Jets have until early May to exercise the fifth-year option for Coples, a former first-round pick. It was a no-brainer last year with Muhammad Wilkerson, but Coples (16.5 sacks in three seasons) hasn't performed at an elite level. For players picked 11th to 32nd (Coples was 16th in 2012), the fifth-year salary would be the average salary of players ranked third to 25th in salary for that position. Figure it'll be about $7 million, last year's number for an outside linebacker in that draft-pick range. The salary is guaranteed for injury as soon as the option is exercised. It's a tough call for the Jets, who might opt to decline in an effort to increase Coples' motivation.

Big picture: The top story involves Harris, who will be a free agent for the first time in his career. He has said he'd like to finish his career in New York, but the coaching-staff change could impact his future. Rex Ryan's system was heavily reliant on linebackers, especially Harris, who played the "Mike" position, called the defensive signals and never came off the field. Ryan stayed in base personnel for 587 snaps last season, third-highest in the league. In Arizona, Todd Bowles played most of the time in sub packages, replacing linebackers with defensive backs. In fact, he played a league-high 569 snaps in dime personnel. If he adopts the same philosophy with the Jets, it could minimize the value of the inside linebackers. Bottom line: Harris is a good player and it would hurt to lose him. The question is whether the new regime will pay to keep him. If he hits the open market, there is a good chance he will sign elsewhere, perhaps reuniting with Ryan in Buffalo.

The pass rush was fairly effective last season -- they ranked third in sacks per dropback -- but the Jets need more production from their edge rushers. Coples, Pace, and Babin combined for only 13.5 sacks. There are a few highly rated rushers in the draft who could be available with the sixth pick -- Shane Ray, Randy Gregory and Dante Fowler Jr. There are some free agents, too, that would make sense if the Jets are willing to invest big money.

Free-agent market watch: Pending free agents include Justin Houston, Jerry Hughes, Pernell McPhee, Brian Orakpo, Brooks Reed, Sean Weatherspoon, and Jason Worilds.

Like to have Harris back, but just for one more season. Might be tough, think Rex will be interested

I have never been a big Harris fan. He is too slow footed for my taste.

He wasn't very good in coverage, and was over paid, but he was a very solid player. Really don't want to see him with the Bils. Would like to see him do one more year and retire as a Jet. Guess that just doesn't happen in todays NFL anymore.

I'm with you as our LB's don't need to be run-stuffers with our superb DLine play. We need guys with better coverage ability and overall, much better pursuit. Harris and Pace have been left in the dust more times than I care to remember. We might have the slowest bunch in the league. Team speed needs to be addressed at last and I for one, don't want to see Harris return. Give me one of those Cowboys in the middle - McClain or Carter. They're on my list.

yeah my big issue with this defense is like people said we need speed. I want the prototype MLB in the ray lewis mold a guy that can run sideline to sideline cover te's and who can catch rb's from behind I want that guy.

Agreed. We need an influx of youth and speed at lb. I'd love to find a way to get Shaq Thompson in the draft.

Yeah, but he's too small. Goes about 218-225 from what I've seen...the reason why Mayock lists him as a safety. Besides that, even at a higher playing weight, he's a 4-3 OLB. Too small for 3-4. There are others out there. Paul Dawson is also a little small at 230. Beasley at 235 - the same.

231 lbs

239lbs

Davis played outside in a 4-3 at Arkansas State as well. Put Thompson in an NFL strength and conditioning program and he'll be fine. The NFL game is changing. LB's need to be able to cover te's like Graham/Gronk. Speed is the name of the game.

those weight #'s are taken from college programs, which are notorious liars. LOL

Have to wait till next week at the combine to see what they actually weight

Your point is still off kilter unless you are suggesting he plays ILB. Because typically, the OLB's in a 3-4 are even larger.

Not sure I understand what you're saying. I'm saying that Thompson would transition from a college 4-3 olb to a pro ilb just like Davis did which is why I used Davis as an example and mentioned that he played 4-3 olb at Arkansas State.

Oh, so you're suggesting the Jets use their #6 pick on an ILB? Now I'm confused. Or stunned. Surely you acknowledge he's not a 3-4 OLB nor an edge pass rusher that we covet. I'm not sure why we would be looking at him.
But maybe they go with the 4-3 base defense after all. We'll see.

Did you follow anything that I've posted thus far? When did I post use the 6th pick on him? All I said was that I hoped there would be a way to get him in the draft. Harris is old and slow and needs to be replaced. We need lbs who can play in space.

Well, I don't know where else you'd get him. He's projected by most to go anywhere between 10-20 so it won't be the 2nd round. I hope we can somehow get Winston too but that's not likely to happen.
Frankly, it's a need that I'm hoping can be addressed in FA.

Here's something posted just yesterday concerning his weight:

An AFC North scout isn't sure Washington LB Shaq Thompson can keep his weight up enough to stick at LB in the pros.

"He was 219 pounds when I visited late in the season. I'm concerned about whether he will be able to keep enough weight on to be a 4-3 WILL. Until I see him actually play deep as a safety, I'm not sure that is a projection I'm comfortable making," the scout said. NFL Media's Mike Mayock ranks Thompson as the No. 2 S, though Thompson is most comfortable at strong side LB. "He'll need to add mass to his frame -- he is listed at 228 pounds, but played under that weight at times -- and despite his high motor, he lacks the play strength to back up his intentions near the line of scrimmage," wrote NFL.com's Lance Zierlein. "Still, he's a long, twitchy linebacker with good athleticism and big-play potential and could become a unique chess piece in the hands of the right defensive coordinator." Feb 13 - 2:08 AM

Comment: Looks like a poor fit at ILB.

My first mention of Thompson was "finding a way to get him". Never said use pick 6. That's why I was wondering if you following along. Trade back. Trade up from round 2. Whatever.

Whatever is right. Bottom line: he's a bad fit for this team and is not even available where we pick. Very much whatever.

If we traded down with the Browns or Eagles, he'd be in the perfect range to be picked. Also, there's always room for difference makers on a team. I heard the same "he's not a fit" line from many in 2013 about Sheldon Richardson too. This team lacks game changing players. On the collegiate level, Thompson has been a game changer.
