Jets exercise options for Babin and Pace; Cut ties with CJ

The question is what RB's will now best fit Gailey's offense? I would think Powell would fit nicely but what about Ivory? Not the best receiving RB out there. Something that bears watching IMO.

Another question I have is do these options exercised indicate the Jets will definitely be running a base 3-4? Maybe this was never in question but it really never has been addressed by the new coach. Inquiring minds want to know.
what bolwes runs here is anyones guess but he wasn't married to either a 3-4 or a 4-3 in arizona.. he mixed his fronts up..

Cimini had this today on Bowles' defense in comparison to Ryan.

"Ryan stayed in base personnel for 587 snaps last season, third-highest in the league. In Arizona, Todd Bowles played most of the time in sub packages, replacing linebackers with defensive backs. In fact, he played a league-high 569 snaps in dime personnel."

Makes sense but I would have let Pace go. We can do better. We need someone faster that can help out with zone coverage.

Me too but I think keeping him is just for insurance purposes in case we can't upgrade.

ivory is fine here he is alot like fred jackson who was sharing with spiller and that tandem was great so good in fact they let marshawn go in buffalo

so a spiller, ivory, and powell back field is nice...........oh and we have richardson on contract for at least one more year also I believe he can play ion the NFL.

I think Jackson is more of a pass catcher than Ivory but I do agree that we will keep Ivory and Powell.

I would have like to see all 3 go but I can understand keeping Pace and Babin for now. Hopefully they get beat out for jobs in training camp.

If they get beat out. Great! It just makes sense keeping them both around for $500,000 with no one to replace them right now

besides it sounds as if bowles runs dime more than anything so we could use more db's than lb's

I hope they do. Guys not a HOF'er but IMO Powell is the Jets most steady RB. He blocks well, catches the ball well, and gets his 4 ypc. valuable guy

Babin 6'3"/267 is 34 and a meat head and not as fast as he used to be. And my Wake guy Pace 6'4"/265 is done as well @ 33. Combined they've been in the NFL 23 years. We need to get younger and faster and put Coples @ DT in a 4-2-5. We need a stud LB to play next to Davis that can blitz and cover a TE or RB. I bet we bring in CJ Spiller RB ?

Go Jets...Cyborg

It would only be fair to point out that comparing Jackson to Ivory isn't very accurate in that Jackson has a career 322 receptions compared to Ivory's 23. Of course Fred fit Gailey's offense. Maybe Gailey fits Ivory in as he accommodated Bettis in Pittsburgh but to this point, I haven't seen any reason to be certain he'll be here based on the offense he ran in Buffalo.

i was going by the fact is jackson was a run between the tackles kinda back in buffalo and that is what ivory is here, you add spiller to the mix in buffalo and possibly here and he would take on the role of playing in space and you wouldn't need ivory to have many receptions at all.

Ivory isn't going anywhere. He's a thumper. You always need a thumper. I love his running style. He wants contact.

I would dare say that most teams don't have a thumper with the advent of the modern passing offenses. Certainly not 3M dollar thumpers. Just the same, I'd like to keep him the way he runs thru NE.

I got it.

I can't help but think that even when Marty was here that Ivory was a square peg in a round hole RB as MM wanted to pass to his RB's more. But Rex in his meddling way (to further handcuff the offense) insisted on ground and pound. This is how I view Ivory in a Gailey offense. I think he's a bad fit.

Anyway, I'm sorry to keep addressing this but I had to respond in jest to the Fred Jackson - Ivory comparison. I'll try to shut up.

oh i understand what you meant and yes fred is the more complete back but I was just saying both him and ivory are the workhorse run between the tackles kinda rb's and if anyone is going to find a place to put ivory it will be gailey look at what he did with bettis in pitt.

Keep in mind that this is what was on hand when he was hired in Pittsburgh. When he assembled his own team as a HC in Buffalo, he didn't have such a one-dimensional RB. How much will he change here if any? And you mention two types of backs yet he doesn't utilize a two-back system.

And I would maintain that insisting on Ivory in this offense that Marty ran has hindered Geno's progress to a degree (and MM's offense as a whole) as Geno rarely threw it to such a stiff. It hurts the check down options when you have stone hands out there. We'll see soon enough. I'd personally like to see the Jets sign Spiller or Vareen and get a RB from this deep draft with my target in the 3rd round (if he's there) of TJ Yeldon.
I'm tired of seeing this offense stuck in the dark ages.

gailey as a hc and as a oc are two different guys. When he was oc in pitt he created new uses for bettis and kordell stewart i think he can find a good use for ivory.
