SPOILER ALERT! If you haven't watched tonight's episode of The Walking Dead, don't read any further!
"Them" was a much more slow-paced and kind of depressing episode then we've seen in a long time. Most of the characters are still reeling from the loss of Beth and Tyresse but they are also trying to survive despite a lack of food and water and the rising Georgia temperatures. At one point, the group looks so depleted, they almost resemble the dead. I think this image was perfectly captured in Rick's "we are the walking dead" speech, which is one of his most famous lines from the comics.
I really liked the juxtaposition between Maggie and Sasha's grief. The former seemed like she had no more will to fight while the latter was so angry, all she wanted to do was fight. Their grief was perfectly entwined with the religious themes present within this episode. Father Gabriel tried his best to console Maggie but she stated she had given up faith.
This made me question the role faith has on this show. Does having faith help in situations like the zombie apocalypse or make things worse? I think the show does a good job at showing the benefits and pitfalls of having faith. Moral characters often die BUT when our group of survivors needed water -- it rained; when they needed food -- there were the dogs (which is an image I want to forever erase from my mind); and when they needed shelter -- there was the barn.
AND then there was Aaron, the newest cast member and "stranger danger" that our group encountered. I read the comics so I know who he is and let's just say that things are going to get worse before they get better.
Thoughts on "Them"?
