A closer look at the areas the New York Jets could address in the draft. We'll continue today with a look at the cornerbacks, who are scheduled to work out Monday in Indianapolis.

Position of need: Welcome to Rex Ryan's pain, Todd Bowles. The Jets' new coach inherits a grim cornerback situation, and that has to be particularly concerning because Bowles, like his predecessor, relies on man-to-man coverage to play his blitz-heavy scheme. Right now, the depth chart includes Dee Milliner (returning from Achilles' tendon surgery) and a group of backup types. Look for them to sign a free agent and draft a corner. Bowles likes big cornerbacks with press-man ability, which means he will like the top of this draft.

Three players the Jets could target in the draft:

Trae Waynes (CB), Michigan State: He's considered by many to be the top cornerback in the draft. He has the size (6-foot-1) and man-to-man skills to fit ideally into Bowles' system. Waynes (three interceptions, eight pass break-ups in 2014) is the typical Michigan State corner: Tough, physical, and competitive. The question is, would he be worth the sixth pick in the draft? He could jump into the top 10 if he blazes the 40-yard dash at the combine.

Marcus Peters (CB), Washington: He's the Jameis Winston of cornerbacks: So much talent, but red flags. Peters failed a drug test, received an academic suspension and was booted off the team last November after a series of run-ins with the coaching staff, raising concerns about his character. He's friends with Marshawn Lynch, which might explain is odd behavior. As for his football ability, the 6-foot Peters (11 career interceptions) might be the most complete cornerback in the draft. Obviously, the Jets will perform due diligence on his background.

Jalen Collins (CB), LSU: He's 6-foot-2, with an impressive skill set and press-man ability. Collins has Antonio Cromartie-esque skills (a young Cromartie), but the concern is that he never was a full-time starter in college. That certainly raises some questions. With his athleticism, Collins (three career interceptions) could blow up the combine, but teams will have to study him closely before investing a high pick. Right now, he's a borderline first-round pick.

I sure hope the Jets won't be taking any CB's at 6. IMO the FA market is the place to get the CB's.

That is unless they trade down out of 6. the more I look at this draft the more I think they should trade down, unless Winsto is available.

I doubt they draft a CB at 6 but if they do I'd say grab Trae Waynes. If you watch his highlights he's worth a 1st round pick. Not saying they should, just saying if they do.

If we pick up a veteran CB and draft in the 3rd or 4th for one I think we could leave the draft with a solid Corner. Can't remember his name but there's a really good FS out of Arizona State that seems like a good choice, if he converts to corner.

Assume your talking about Damarious Randall. He is a good S. very bad idea to try to convert him to CB. Doubt he has the speed to play CB. Very difficult transition for a player.

Jets tried that with Allen last year. Hope they didn't screw the kid up. After it failed and he went back to S, he played like crap. Hope he finds his swag at S again next year.

It would be a bad idea to convert him given how good he is. I was only saying that because for the he would have an easier chance to stand out at CB here if at all. We already have Pryor and Jarrett at Safety, not including Landry. On the Allen issue, I think he will be fine if he sticks with safety.

Potential offseason CB targets for Jets

It's not exactly a secret that the New York Jets desperately need to upgrade the talent level of their CB corps this offseason. We should expect them to address the position both during free agency and the draft.

Assuming that the Jets will not be able to lure Darrelle Revis away from the New England Patriots, who might some of their targets be?

"The Jets are expected to be one of the primary suitors for Seahawks free agent Byron Maxwell," wrote Brian Costello of the New York Post. "The talk in Indy was that the Jets and Eagles would be the two teams fighting for him.

"After Maxwell, there is a bit of a drop-off, but the Jets likely will add one of the second-tier corners, too — possibly Antonio Cromartie, who has publicly campaigned for a return to the Jets. ...

"In the draft, I heard the Jets are very high on LSU’s Jalen Collins and Wake Forest’s Kevin Johnson. Keep an eye on them if they slip into the second round."

The trouble for the Jets if they wait until the second round is that there are several other teams that may be aiming to draft a talented cornerback prospect in the back half of the first round:

Todd McShay
Combine's impact on top 5 picks
"There are several teams picking between No. 11 and No. 26 overall that could use a corner, including the Vikings, Saints and Ravens, and Trae Waynes, Byron Jones and LSU's Jalen Collins (who also ran well with a 4.48 40) could be among those that benefit. Given the influx of talented receivers last year, and with another good class on the way, teams are starving for cornerbacks -- especially ones with size. Teams simply have to find guys with length and speed to match up with some of these guys, and they might be more inclined than in past years to take a chance on a corner early who might not have the polish and technique they're looking for, but who does have the natural tools needed to develop into a good NFL cornerback."
