Jets Will Go Hard After C J Spiller

not sure why spiller and harvin are an either/or proposition. spiller would replace CJ in the backfield. harvin is a WR (albeit not a high volume one). not sure why we couldn't have both on the team. we need speed and play-making ability on offense. at the right price, i'd take them both

I wouldn't

Harvin carries the title of WR, but he isn't an outside #1 WR. Both Spiller and Harvin would play the same role on the team. Swing plays out of the backfield. Trying to get them 1 on 1 in space. The Jets need a real WR on the outside to compliment Decker.

harvin ain't that guy

I agree.....CJ and Harvin together would create problems for most defenses.

If this is true, and I hope it is, that would probably mean the Jets are going to release Harvin. I know that Spiller isn't a WR, but Harvin isn't either.

Even if we were to sign Spiller, Harvin is too talented to just cut. I would hope the Jets can find a way to keep him.

There's that minor issue of 10 million a year that has to be in the equation

Yeah, agree that it's easy to play fantasy football when you have an unlimited budget, but we didn't just jettison an entire front office so we could "buy" an offense. Still like to think that scouting has value and that our scouts can identify value when it come to talent. We all know that elite playmakers cost the most money, but that doesn't mean we have to shoot our wad on a couple of divas. The Cheats have led the league scoring with a bunch of nobodies carrying and catching the ball for years. No, the guy delivering it up there isn't a nobody, but CJ Spiller doesn't turn Geno into Mr. Bundschen either.

Agreed. The big play threat of Spiller and Harvin spreading out the field and Ivory the hammer behind them would give Gaily a nice set of options.

It won't be a flat out cut. Macc indicated today that they are going to ask Harvin to re-do his contract. IMO that means a pay cut. Probably in the area of 6-6.5 million. That's about what he's worth.........Maybe. He still thinks he's worth 10.5........He'll say no.

They will most likely talk again in FA

I guess this will work. I would much rather them draft a RB in the 4th or 5th that will do or you hope will do what Spiller can do and also remain healthly while doing it. Plus he will be younger. With the injury history Spiller has and the thread on his tires, we would be taking just as much risk with a 4th or 5th round rookie. So why not go with the rookie instead.

Isn't Spiller injury prone? It seems like whenever we played the Bills, he was out.
I can't remember Spiller playing a full season in a past few years. I can't remember him playing in these few season because of his injuries. So unless I'm wrong in my thinking here, he is injury prone.

if they can't get harvin to agree to a new deal that lowers his annual pay, then they should cut bait with him and keep the 4th round pick.

but the jets do need weapons on offense. chances are our QB play will not be even close to what the pats get out of their QB. be it geno, a rookie, or a street free agent, it's highly unlikely the next tom brady is walking through the doors. so it is incumbent upon macc to surround this QB, whoever it is, with as much talent as possible. yes, the pats get away with a bunch of no names (other than gronk, who is probably one of the 3 best "receivers" (WR/TE) in the league). not sure we can't do the same with geno...or mccown...or fitzpatrick...or mariota...or petty, etc...

so we need playmakers. decker is solid, amaro shows promise, kerley is decent, ivory is a good runner. but that is not enough. we need more.

I am hoping we have those names +Spiller +Harvin...that's a lot of speed that can make a simple play a big play...and our QB, whoever it is, will need that, IMO. To your point, we dont have a QB that will throw Wrs open and make them better, we need it the other way around, the players elevate the Qb's play.

Jets may try to get Percy Harvin to rework his contract

By Brian Costello

February 19, 2015 | 1:02am

INDIANAPOLIS — The clock is ticking for the Jets to make a decision on whether to keep wide receiver Percy Harvin.

The team has until March 19 to determine whether to cut him or keep him. He is set to make $10.5 million this year. If he is on the roster on March 19, the Seahawks receive the Jets’ fourth-round pick as a condition of the October trade. If Harvin is released, the Jets will send their sixth-rounder to Seattle.

“That’s a process we’re working through. We’re going to talk to his agent,” general manager Mike Maccagnan said. “We do think Percy is a very good player, but that’s a process we’re working through right now.”

Maccagnan said one option is to ask Harvin to rework his contract. It is highly unlikely Harvin would want to stay with the Jets for less money. If he is going to take less, chances are he would rather go to a contender with a proven quarterback.

“You have to look at different options you can do whether you carry him at his current contract, whether you try to restructure him for a more cap-friendly number,” Maccagnan said.

Harvin had 29 catches for 350 yards and one touchdown in eight games with the Jets last year.

In addition to the agent for Harvin, the Jets also plan on meeting with the agents for defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson and linebacker David Harris. Wilkerson is entering the final year of his contract and is seeking a long-term deal. Harris is set to be a free agent on March 10. Both sound like priorities for Maccagnan.

“I don’t want to put a timetable on that. I think that’s something that’s on our list of things to do,” Maccagnan said of a Wilkerson deal. “I would say since Todd [Bowles, coach] and I got on board, we haven’t really worked with Muhammad previously. It’s something we’re going to go through the process of evaluating and kind of see how it goes going forward. I would definitely say Muhammad is a player we like. We’ll see how this process unfolds.”

As for Harris?

“We think David Harris is a very good football player,” Maccagnan said. “I think he’s had an excellent career with the Jets. I think we would very much like to keep David in the mix. It’s free agency so we still have to have a meeting between us and the agent and the player on where that value is, but I would say David is a player we would very much like to get back in the mix.”

Former Jets coach Rex Ryan loved to talk about chasing the Patriots. Bowles had an interesting answer when asked about the rivalry with New England.

“I don’t think it means anything to us right now,” Bowles said. “Right now, we’re trying to become the New York Jets, and we’re trying to become a winning ballclub. We’re going to concentrate on us. You can’t beat the Patriots in February. Just beating the Patriots is not going to cut it if you lose to everybody else. We’ve got to have a growth process of how to win while we’re winning and trying to win and beat more than just the Patriots.”

Maccagnan said the Jets are projecting CB Dee Milliner to be back on the field in the late spring or early summer. Milliner tore his left Achilles tendon in October. …. The Jets are going to bolster the cornerback position, something they failed to do last year. “You can never have enough good ones,” Maccagnan said. “I’d be very happy if we had a surplus at that position.”

CJ Spiller is miles better than anyone in the 4th or 5th round of this draft. If he were eligible for this draft he would be considered a borderline 1st rounder. He has elite speed and open field play making ability.

Yes, he has had trouble staying healthy but that is the only knock on the guy. But then again, Percy Harvin has the same issues. The difference between the two players is that Spiller comes at half the price and he is a good guy and teammate. They are almost identical players on the field, however.

Well worth the risk.

that is because no one else but chan gailey was using him right, coincidentally that is also the last time he played a full season i believe.

other oc's were trying to use spiller as a everyday workhorse type of back but that is not what he is.

That is what we have ivory for and spiller would come in or be on the field the same time but he is tier to spread the defense or get a one on one match-up with the lb's which he will win everytime because he is to fast.
