INDIANAPOLIS -- Free agent quarterback Josh McCown is on the Jets’ radar.
The team met with the quarterback, who was recently released by the Bucs, on Wednesday, Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said Wednesday.
“I think I would say simply, every quarterback out there we’d have an interest in. We did visit with Josh here at the combine, so we had a little chance for him to kind of feel us out and us to feel him out a little bit,” Maccagnan said. “That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re actively going after him. It’s sort of an inquiry process we’re going through.”
Maccagnan confirmed that the meeting took place on Wednesday.
The Jets badly need to upgrade the production they have gotten out of the quarterback position, and it seems logical that the team would want to bring in a veteran QB to compete with Geno Smith, regardless of whether they draft a quarterback or not.
McCown put up big numbers with the Bears in 2013 while filling in for Jay Cutler, posting a 109 QB rating in eight games and five starts. However, that production fell off tremendously last season with the Bucs, when McCown put up a QB rating of just 70.5 11 starts.
McCown visited with the Bills in Buffalo but did not reach a deal with the team.
