Upset special: The New York Jets will beat the Minnesota Vikings

On Sunday the New York Jets (2-10) take on the Minnesota Vikings (5-7) at TCF Bank Stadium (1 p.m. EST). The Jets, losers of their last two games, enter this match-up as an organization in disarray while the Vikings are a young team on the rise led by rookie quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. Here are some of the keys to the game from the New York perspective.

Offense

Run the ball- Believe it or not the New York Jets could implement their run heavy offense again this week as the Vikings rush defense is ranked 24th in the NFL giving up almost 124 yards a game. Look for another heavy dose of running backs Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson with Percy Harvin sprinkled in.

Pass blocking- The Minnesota defense will most likely stack the line of scrimmage in order to put pressure on the Jets to pass the ball. The offensive line must do a better job in pass protection, as last week was an awful performance in terms of blitz pickup. Keep an eye on Vikings’defenders Everson Griffen (11 sacks), Sharrif Floyd (4.5 sacks), Tom Johnson (5.5 sacks), and Anthony Barr (4 sacks).

Get Geno going- Following a game where Geno Smith only threw the football 13 times, the Jets must do a better job of getting the second year quarterback comfortable within the game plan. Whether it is the short to intermediate passing game, or the play action pass, the young signal caller has to develop early chemistry with his wide receivers.

Defense

Run defense- As expected the Minnesota Vikings are protecting their young quarterback with a powerful running game, one that is ranked 13th in the NFL. Look for the Jets 3rd ranked run defense to shut down the ground game making the Minnesota offense one-dimensional.

Pass coverage- The Vikings have some weapons in the passing game including veteran pass catcher Greg Jennings along with wide receivers Charles Johnson and Cordarrelle Patterson. The Jets secondary must remain consistent in coverage and also account for tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Prediction

On paper this has the potential to be a close game, one that the Jets should win. Rex Ryan normally does an excellent job against rookie quarterbacks and the offense should be able to run the ball down the Vikings throats. The unknown factor is the Jets mindset coming off of a debilitating loss. Is this the game where Gang Green starts to fall off in terms of effort? Lets not forget that meaningless games in December are usually when players start to mail it in. With blind faith: Jets 21-13

IMO The Jets will run off back to back wins against the Vikes, and the Titians.

That should make everyone crazy

I don't know if rex wants to say FU to idzick again he may let geno throw it 40 times to prove to idzick that after geno throws 4 INTs he is not the guy.

I really don't think rex cares at this point he says he does but I think his ego is bigger than his will to win.

Now is the game to run the ball, the Vikings cant stop the run and bridgewater will make his mistakes. I love the jets but it is in their best interest to lose out.

I hope we lose but I will be apathetic when watching this game. I agree with ucrenegade. I believe we'll have Geno throw a ton just to piss people off some more.

Honestly, I think Rex will coach to win. Remember, he wants the best possible record to put oh his resume.

It does appear we match up pretty well with the Vikings. Although there are some bad match-ups as well. The Vikings have a good pass rush, and our pass blocking is weak. Geno also is prone to holding on to the ball. While the Vikings are not great against the running game, if they stack the box, they probably will be able to slow us down. Mike Zimmer, like Rex, is a great defensive specialist. Also I believe I heard Cordarrelle Patterson was not playing in this game.

This should be a winnable game for the New York Jets. Key word: Should.

The Minnesota Vikings are offensively challenged, just like the Jets, and they haven’t defeated a team with a winning record. But who are we kidding? The Jets are 2-10 for a reason -- actually, many reasons. One if them is because they’re a lousy road team -- 0-5, with a minus-89 point differential. They’re quite capable of getting blown out.

They can keep it close with another 200-yard rushing day, and the Vikings’ run defense is vulnerable. But the Vikings have young playmakers on all three levels of the defense, and that doesn’t bode well for quarterback Geno Smith -- assuming the Jets allow him to throw the ball. This could be the coldest game of Smith's pro career, and there are questions about his ability to function in the cold. Heck, there are questions about him in every condition.

Prediction: Vikings 24, Jets 13

My guess is 24-17. it will be a close game but we blow it in the end and allow a td in the dying minutes.

I have no idea what the outcome of this game will be. Is it possible Geno plays better because he feels less pressure on the road? Or will the vikings load the box and stop our running game? Hard to say. The Vikings pass rush could give Geno fits in passing situations. On the other hand we are a good running team and the Vikings have had problems stopping the run. For the Jets to win Geno will have to have success early with passing thus setting up the run. We will see!

Like every other team does the Viks will sell out to stop the run. Then sit back and see how many perfect strikes Geno can throw to the guys in purple

Which is why Asiata, available as FA is starting at Flex for me in Rd one of the playoffs

Hmmm maybe I pick him up. With the Bears ****ty performance, my teams have gotten off to a rough start for the first week of playoffs. I have Jeffrey on two teams and Marshall on another.

I have renamed this the game thread. I'm excited to see this week's game plan and see Marty continue to "stick it" to Rex!
