On the Mike and Mike show they just reported that Woody and Mac will make a major push for Revis during FA. Reports have it the Pats will not exercise Revis option and he will become a FA. Thoughts!

You have to figure this is his last chance for a big contract. He has his ring and his age is getting up there. 30 I think. He will go where the money is and I predict finally stay put where ever he goes.

I hate to spend crazy money on him but its a huge need so it could be justified. Would be easier to swallow then a big contract for Suh.

Honestly I'm not buying Woody "begging" for his return. Woody clearly had enough of him in the past. Why the sudden change of heart? Media driven I'm sure.

I think Woody is looking at it from a football standpoint..he saw how much the CB situation killed us last year and you cannot rely on rely young raw cornerbacks to play alot and succeed on a regular basis.....which I m glad he potentially is not holding a grudge..

..but the biggest question here is not about Woody or Macc it is if he is the type of Player that Bowles wants in his defense, Revis is a great player, but especially thrived in Rex's schemes CB on an "island" mentality , especially at the money....maybe you go a little younger and a little less money Kareem Jackson Bryon Maxwell....

although I am sure Woody thinks it would put a few more seats in the seats.....MEMO to Woody....winning will put more people in the seats and I think he is FINALLY committed to that

Financially and age wise I'd say take Maxwell. But in reality if we're going to spend big money on a Vet I dont see Revis as a bad choice. He's one of the best at a position we blatantly lack so it wouldn't hurt us. I dont see it happening but I'm not against it. I dont typically read into anything I hear on Mike and Mike so I'll believe it if I hear it elsewhere.

I believe this will be great and the way they should go. If not Revis then with Maxwell but Revis is a proven #1 lock down CB. There is no better even at his age and we can get 3-4 more good years out of him if he stays healthy. Once he starts to truly decline at playing corner they can switch him to safety as players like Woodson have done. If this happens the new regime won't even have to entertain drafting a CB in the first round as some of the mock draft idiots are predicting. They can focus on QB, WR at last a pass rushing/coverage true LB as they should be doing anyway.

it will be interesting imagine the two corners signed in FA revis and cro.

5th Year Team Option

I like the idea as Woody has possibly already dinged us with the possible tampering charge so why not follow through for a big area of need while we have the cap space. Would kind of suck to lose a draft pick while the evil empire still gets to keep him.

The worse case scenario is it drives up his price if the Pats do want to keep him.

I thought it was for sure he wasn't going to be a Pat next year?

It's for sure the Pats will cut him because he would cost them over $20MM to keep under the current deal. They could still re-sign him and probably would like to if they can afford it. They'll have to work a little overtime hacking the NFL salary cap rulebook to pull it off but who knows...

Not my first choice, by any means. He'd definitely be an upgrade at CB, but there are guys I'd pick before him.

Darrelle Revis - DB - Patriots
According to the New York Daily News, Jets owner Woody Johnson has had discussions with GM Mike Maccagnan about signing Patriots CB Darrelle Revis.
As integral as Revis was to the Patriots' championship run last season, there's no way they can keep him at his current salary. New England would absorb a monstrous $25 million cap hit by picking up his option, making it a near certainty that Revis will hit the market. The Jets have a serious need at corner and are $51 million under the cap, so this is more than just smoke and mirrors. Revis went to four Pro Bowls during his six-year stay in the Meadowlands from 2007 to 2012.

Woody Johnson leaning on his G.M. to bring Darrelle Revis back

Woody Johnson, Mike Maccagnan

Woody Johnson was quick to say he “misspoke” last year when he blatantly “tampered” with Patriots cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Apparently, he’s still talking about Revis, but keeping it within his building.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, Johnson “has been involved in serious internal discussions” with General Manager Mike Maccagnan to make a push for Revis if and when he becomes available.

The Patriots would have to pick up a $20 million option bonus by March 9, part of the “placeholder” deal that helped Revis win his first Super Bowl. They’re working on a long-term deal to keep Revis there, and if nothing else, reports of Jets interest will at least make it more expensive.

But the Jets need Revis perhaps more than ever, since new coach Todd Bowles depends on his corners playing press-man so he can blitz more.

So it’s one thing for Johnson to say he’d “love to have Darrelle back,” but it’s easier to put that plan into motion now. The Jets have $51 million in cap room, and the means to bring him back.

Now they just have to get him away from the Patriots, and every other team in the AFC with a link to him and a need (Rex Ryan in Buffalo and Mike Tannenbaum in Miami).

This story is being reported by serial liar Manish Mehta, so I take it with a grain of salt. But with that said...

This would be a final contract type deal, so I fully expect Revis to ask for 5 years, and a boatload of cash. It's gonna be a contract that pays for what you'll get for another three years: dominant play from him. Then you'll be stuck with a 34-35 year old has-been who's overpaid and not performing up to the deal. But this is how it works unfortunately. You pay for the "now" (3 years), and have to overpay for the "then" (beyond that).

Revis is still a top 5-6 CB in this game. And it's no mystery where this team is hurting badly. For that reason, I'd be in favor of shelling out the big bucks for him. He'd be an immediate big upgrade to the secondary. And, it would hurt NE's defense.

Buzz on Darrelle Revis with Patriots, Jets

Although the New England Patriots hold an option on Darrelle Revis' contract for 2015, they aren't expected to invoke it because it would cost them a whopping $25 million in salary-cap space.

Will Revis work out a long-term deal with the Patriots, in lieu of the 2015 option?

"I think he's looking for a home, and I think he felt like home was [the Patriots]," ESPN NFL Insider Mark Dominik said Tuesday morning on Mike & Mike. "I think Revis stays at a reasonable rate. ... I think maybe it's more than $12 million for five years -- $60 million, maybe -- it's done. But I think New England's going to get a discount, and I think it's going to be hard for Revis not to want to stay there."

Dominik pointed specifically to Revis getting a taste of success by winning the Super Bowl with the Pats as a primary reason why he is unlikely to leave the team. Nonetheless, if he makes it to the market, plenty of suitors will come calling, and that should include his former team, the New York Jets.

"The Daily News has learned that [owner Woody] Johnson has been involved in serious internal discussions with Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan to make a push for perennial All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis if/when he becomes a free agent next week," wrote Manish Mehta.

Of course, internal discussions are a long way from actually luring Revis back to the Jets. There has been no buzz as of yet that the interest is mutual. However, if Revis decides to follow the money, the Jets will be in position to outbid the Patriots, because they have well over $50 million in salary-cap space.

I refuse to believe that the most business-first, pay-me-now player in the NFL would go to the most business-first, cut-your-mother-for-cap-space team, and suddenly it would be about finding a home, and being comfortable.

It's actually patently ridiculous, especially after he got his ring. If anything, he's going to be even more about the dollars now. This is just typical, "everyone wants to be a Patriot forever and ever and ever" bull.
