More protection for Wilson

The Jets allowed 53 sacks (29th), but it's wrong to put all the blame on the offensive line. Some of it goes on Wilson, who held the ball too long at times. His average time to pass was 3.0 seconds (30th), which should improve in his second year. That said, the line still needs work, especially with right tackle Morgan Moses and right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif heading to free agency.

Those who know Douglas say they won't be shocked if he uses a first-round pick on a lineman for the third straight year. He nailed it with left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker (2020), but left tackle Mekhi Becton (2019) has sparked concern within the organization because of his slower-than-expected return from a knee procedure.

"I expect big things from him next year," Douglas said, repeating the company line on Becton. "We all want Mekhi back."

Becton and George Fant, who played admirably in Becton's place, are the only starting-caliber tackles under contract. Saleh loves Fant's toughness -- he played on a balky knee that will require an offseason procedure -- but it's hard to see them relying solely on Fant (30 in July) and Becton to be Wilson's bookends. It's time to add a blue chip into the equation, especially one who can bring a much-needed punch to the running game.

The draft is top-heavy with tackles, including three who could land in the top 10 -- Evan Neal (Alabama), Charles Cross (Mississippi State) and Ikem Ekwonu (North Carolina State).

i have a hard time thinking that JD will go that high for the C position or the right side of the line "if" we keep both in the top 10.
That isn't the MoneyBall style he uses.

This makes more sense:

Sean Rhyan in the second at RT?
Darian Kinnard in the second at RG?
Cade Mays in the 4th at C?

O-Line (like WR and TE) is a position I'd like to see Joe Douglas attack throughout both FA and then the draft.

FA = one of...

Terron Armstead (OT).
Orlando Brown (OT).
Brandon Scherff (RG).

Yes. it's great to go young with the likes of Mekhi Becton/Alijah Vera-Tucker + 2022's future 1st round O-Linemen but these young kids will need their veteran leader on the O-Line too and one of either Armstead/Brown/Scherff will provide them with just that; a dominant veteran leader.

Round 1 = one of either...

Evan Neal (RT).
Tyler Linderbaum (C).
Ikem Ekwonu (RG).

Those are my favorite top 3 O-Lineman and I'd celebrate either which one who JD pulls the trigger on.

Hard PASS on Scherff. He didn't even want a massive contract from Washington. He is too old to pay big money to IMO and this guy never plays a full season. HARD PASS!!

I like this line of thinking as a 2nd OL picked, but I do like the idea of adding a guy in the first like Ikem/Cross/Penning. Add ZJohnson to the late 1st/2nd round mix as well. The more I think about it #4 has a lot more value to QB needy teams than us, and would like to move down in the first and add a second and more. That may sound absurd because of the present talent level on the team, but we need to stock up on as many quality guys as we can. Adding late #1's (this year and next), 2's and 3's does that for us. Lot's of OL talent in this draft, and we don't have to jump at the shiniest one.

amen...from your fingertips to JD's eyes. when you think about what it would take to make us competitive for a playoff run, adding a plethora of quality players whose positions traditionally come with a second and third round price tag, it is a smart use of a trade back of the #4 pick.

and nobody said we have to trade completely out of the first to do it, "but" if we essentially stole someone else's entire 2022 draft other than their first + their #1 for 2023, i would do that....Sort of like the fleecing of Mike Ditka to get Ricky Williams.

I would like to get Ekwonu at #4, but with the biggest need along the Defensive Front and at Linebacker, passing on the Offensive line may be wise. There are very good options in Rd #2 to add a very good RG. If worst came to worst and Evan Neal was available at #4, I would hope that we would pass on him.

He's only 30 years old and Washington doesn't feel the same. Because they've spent their Franchise Tag on him during back to back consecutive offseasons (thats how much they've valued him) but now they have no other choice but to watch him walk into FA).

▪︎ Top 5 overall pick who's not only lived up to expectations but he's shattered them man.

(PFWA All-Rookie Team (2015).
First-team All-Pro (2020).
Pro Bowl (2016, 2017, 20192021
).

He's been awesome and is still awesome and imo has multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro years left in his tank.

We all have our own opinions but he's not injury prone. He's played and started in 89 games since being drafted in 2015. 89 games out of a possible 113 (78.7% availability). 24 games missed throughout 7 years (in comparison to Mekhi Becton who's missed 18 games during only two years).

Injuries are apart of sports especially Football man but this guy is a top 3 NFL RG at a position of weakness and still only 30 years old.

All I really know is that he was a 1st team All-Pro last year and another Pro Bowler this year and imo he's an O-Lineman worth taking a gamble on; especially because we've featured awful talent @ RG for one too many years.

With that said TCT I can understand why you'd be hesitant with a hard pass. But for me. He's been my favorite RG for a couple of years now and I'd love to have him.

I just don't like making a RG the richest RG in history. Sounds like a very Jets thing to do. We can draft a RG for cheap and spend big money somewhere else.

Well said. Say no more.

That underlined bold convinced me.

Now the other side of it could be he turns the OL around like Faneca did, but I don't think Becton is Brick and I know McGovern is not Mangold. If you told me JD would spend crazy money on a RG or spend that money on a WR then I choose a WR for Wilson. I would like to see another 1-2 OL drafted and let them all grow together at a cheaper price for now. All I know is I expect meaningful football next season in December. With the draft assets and cap space, competing for a widlcard spot should be the minimum expected.

Scherf was drafted high because the old very weak on eval Washington front office thought he would be a foundational tackle. In the first camp, it became obvious he needed to move inside. He has spent most Decembers hurt. Plays well when available, but often not available.

If he will take a substantial discount because of his historic injury tendency, fine - but we know he wont

Emphasis of draft.....OL, WR,( A # 1 WR), and Secondary.
Draft wisely, spend for FA because the money doesn't go to fired personnel, it stays in N.J.

so in your opinion, we can count at least 1 pick for the OL in this draft?
first round one pick will be OL
the consensus is between Ikem & Cross
both are tackles but Ikem looks more like a guard
but hearing Saleh & boys are in love with Zion Johnson from BC who is a 2nd round pick
Jets were upset that the Senior Bowl assigned Cade Mays to American team show they were interested in Mays
so three picks could be used on the OL
also hearing they like this kid Nick Zakelj from Fordham

Zion is a bully. love the way he bounces one defender and then onto the next defender; almost like he has eyes in the back of his head to know where his running back is headed.

I like Raimann from Central Michigan. Guy was a TE 2 years ago and is getting better as he goes. The guy is becoming less of a secret as he is now rated to be a 2nd rounder. Had him going in the late third or early 4th. He is a good pick at 38.
