The Paterson story is back.
The New York Jets finished the season with a record of 4-13, but there is plenty of optimism surrounding the organization. They look to be on the right track with Joe Douglas as general manager and Robert Saleh as head coach. While the record wasn’t great, the team was competitive throughout the season despite being overmatched talent-wise nearly every time they took the field.

The Jets lost five games by single digits, so an upgrade in talent could very easily turn this into an eight or nine-win team in 2022. To help take that next step, they need to upgrade the weapons around quarterback Zach Wilson.

Wilson had his struggles as a rookie, as he looked overwhelmed by the speed of the game early in the season, transitioning from BYU to the NFL. His inability to consistently hit check-downs and try to make the spectacular play proved costly, but he was able to reel it in a little more toward the end of the season.

While he has a long way to go to realize his potential, that process would be sped up with some additional weapons. New York didn’t have top-end talent at the skill positions in 2021, but they made it work with what they had.

Jet sweeps were a staple of the offense and trick plays almost became normal place. To keep a defense on their toes, you need versatile players that can fill numerous roles. There is a player that fits that description perfectly that is a free agent this year that would be a fit for the Jets; Cordarrelle Patterson.

Patterson was excellent for the Atlanta Falcons this season. While Deebo Samuel garnered a ton of attention for being a dual-threat running back and wide receiver, it was actually Patterson who was doing it first.

With limited options in their backfield, Patterson was regularly deployed as the team’s running back and he made the most of his opportunities, rushing for 618 yards while piling up 548 yards. He scored 11 combined touchdowns and was as dynamic as any player in the league.

Patterson is the 59th ranked free agent on PFF, so there is a chance he could once again fly under the radar and be someone the Jets can land on a reasonable deal. Injuries hit New York hard at running back and wide receiver, but Patterson is as durable as they come, missing only two games in nine seasons. He would provide depth at both of those spots, in addition to a boost on special teams. He is an electric kick and punt returner should the Jets need one.

Patterson is the definition of a football player. If you needed him to line up on defense, he would likely do it as well. He is the perfect kind of player that the Jets are looking for as they build up their foundation and try to get out of their never-ending rebuild cycle.

I hear Tom Brady could be available..... :homer:
that would fix to problems for me. it would end my misery of rooting for this team because I would immediately not be a Jet fan anymore. and second, I would get to see brady pounded. all 25 years worth in one season

Thats what I thought about Jason Taylor 🤔

But in all reality if he could help improve Zach Wilson his past NE career means nothing to me.

And who's to say he wouldn't enjoy playing for a fired up coach Rob Saleh while going up against the same BB N.E coach who he quit on and left 2x per year?

It's just a thought gmf and a thought I could get behind.
I am telling you he won't come here

moving forward JFM could be moving back inside negating Folorunso Fatukasi's role as a starter he is limited a run defender, like Nathan Sheperd a pass rusher this defense predicates a versatile defensive lineman, yes Foley showed ability to push the pocket but again his inability to bend and move in space to do stunts and counters might cause him to leave in free agency

even Sheldon Rankins could be a cap casualty

looking at the defensive line Q, JFM & Marshall with one maybe two draft prospects could be the new D Line moving forward

Any TE FA/trade rumors? Curious about a couple and would like to know about OJ Howard and why he hasn't blossomed as a pro. Recall reading that he was kinda passive, so that might be it.

a couple FA targets @Old#15 Gerald Everett is one name to keep an eye out while fans are talking about Dalton Schultz fit, actually their are three other names that keep on popping up - Will Dissly, Ian Thomas and Durham Smythe...

Will Dissly and Durham Smythe kinda reflect the Ryan Griffin role while Ian Thomas could be an upgrade over Tyler Kroft...

I don't see Fant going back to RT. He was not comfortable there. Your trying to put band-aids over band-aids or square pegs into round holes. If McGovern stays at Center, he'll need a pair of Guards who will Dominate in run, pass, and pulling. Becton is still our future at LT.

Sheldon Rankins could be a cap casualty, but Shelon Richardson to play along side Q. would be an upgrade if they don't plan to move JFM inside where he is better... Richardson could come in on an incentive laden contract and produce...

I am personally not for it, but it is making it's rounds throughout Jets circles...

I wouldn't raise a stink if they brought him in but for me...........I'd rather not because at 31 years old he is obviously a rental player.

Would you go after any of the top 4 veteran pass rushers before heading into the draft Von Miller, Chandler Jones, Jadeveon Clowney, Randy Gregory?

Or is it just not worth it while at this stage of a rebuild as current non contenders?
The Jets have to be very careful about the type of character they add to a young guy developing roster

indifferent - not sure who he is these days, but on a one year deal, maybe it works
for me I would keep Sheldon Rankins yes consider he has a high cap number but he fits this defensive scheme and would be a rotation player for Q. as long as they solve the other DT position either kicking JFM to inside or draft someone like Perrion Winfrey even Haskell Garrett then it will be okay to stick with Rankins and continue to develop Jonathan Marshall...
