Ever since Trumaine Johnson, I am skeptical in signing an elder CB. I'd rather draft one in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd Rd. It's just with many needs, if we draft a CB early, where do we subtract from a need position.
I was against Trumaine Johnson because I said he was looking for a payday not a new place to play...

Gilmore is different if he signed here, speculation now but if he signed here it would be revenge tour against the Patriots, Jets fans might be willing for that move...

Now the other two names that I just heard are out of left field, first time I heard any noise about them:

Sidney Jones
Mike Hughes

Here is something out of left field, don't get mad but hearing there is mutual interest in Stephon Gilmore to the Jets...

If it feels like the Jets have been searching for cornerbacks since Darrelle Revis left town, it’s because they have. Dalliances with Trumaine Johnson and Morris Claiborne aside, New York hasn’t found an established presence in the defensive backfield. In 2020 fifth-round pick Bryce Hall, Gang Green appears to have landed on at least one competent corner for the 2022 campaign. But they could certainly use another option.

General manager Joe Douglas has nearly $50 million in cap space to spend this offseason, and the Jets should be active on the free-agent market. Gilmore obviously wouldn’t be a long-term asset for New York. Yet, he’d give them a veteran in a secondary that’s full of young players. He could also serve as a tutor for Hall, helping the 24-year-old further emerge in his second NFL season.

Now don't hate me for stating this but if he signed with us is not only because he dominated the AFC East but twice a year he would be on revenge tour against the Patriots.
Guy’s 31 years old and we’re building. That move would stink of desperation and would be a move to ease the pressure from the media and certain fans .

I'd almost bet that one of the free agents that we pick up will fill a Jets need very well because the Coon Cat told me this morning that after doing a lot of research the Jets will sign either Chris Godwin or Carlton Davis. So we are going to get either a good receiver or a good CB. Coon cat says the Bucs don't have a lot of cap space, around 19M, to cover their many expenses and they can't really afford to protect both of these guys. That being the case whichever one they don't tag the Jets will grab up. BUT, the coon cat has been wrong before in the last two seasons, at least once that I can recall. :eyebrows:

for people who think Patriots through Stephon Gilmore away for a 6th round pick don't realize the situation that was going on there...

Gilmore wanted new contract, Patriots didn't want to hear it...
Gilmore then said release me, and I will go get my money elsewhere...
Patriots don't like the inmates running the situation so they sent him abroad to a team for a day 3 pick, quietly telling him who runs the show...
Gilmore went to Carolina and did not miss a beat and continued to play at a high level...

Now that Gilmore is a FA bringing him in on a short term deal - 2 years to help grow the secondary with leadership and a person for our young guys to pick his brain is not going away from building through the draft... They said they would sign veterans on short term deals if it helped the growth of the position groups... Gilmore dominated us and the Phins, Bills over his career... He might want the chance to dominate the Patriots for at least one or two seasons... Jets can make it as team friendly as possible with outs after the first year...

Building a success means you bring in a level of competition to make the young players better... Bring in knowledge and experience, reason why they didn't trade CJ Mosley because he can still play at a high level but he also teaches by doing...

remember this guys Bryce Hall is entering his third year so in 2024 after 2 years of Stephon Gilmore he will be looking to get paid... His current value probably around $8 M annual but what if he took the next step playing along side a Pro Bowler, and improved his overall game? $12 - 17 M annual?

the growth of players helps the team long term success...

Signing someone like JC Jackson who could produce at a high level immediately will hinder the cap now and is he really worth that type of LONG TERM investment now?

Short term investments along with drafting prospects will grow the team into a future successful organization but overpaying for long term value now would only hurt the team down the road, that is my opinion...

Look at the offensive line, a mix of youth and veteran leadership... Do we want 5 young guys running wild and protecting ZW, of course but the best group is how to mix the talent from all ages together...

I agree with this assessment. It's called building through the draft but supplementing through free agency and I like it. You have to throw in a vet here and there to help stimulate the growth and it's, usually, a short term or incentive type contract.

49ers DL Solomon Thomas would be an ideal addition, went to the Super Bowl with Robert Saleh and knows the system along with that he is only 26...

before you guys have a shit fit, I am not suggesting Solomon comes in and starts he can produce as a role player...
drafted by the 49ers and played him on the EDGE he is more of an interior DL, that DE...

listen Robby Anderson is yesterdays news and apparently some idiots go to yearly attempt to steal the headlines

he was good not great but we never added to the offense when he was here poor management

now we have a solid core top to bottom with a growing young core of talent, not going to be fixed in one off season but lets hope they don't strike out when signing free agents or draft selections

5th Year Team Option

free agents come in three tiers
1st day give them the house contracts
2nd day sizeable contracts with friendly team options in year two and three
3rd day & on contracts for players that are the fillers, one year deals mostly prove it type deals

We need a lot of those 3rd day free agent signings!
We could use one or two 2nd day contracts
But our team right now is not set up for those Day 1 type deals

we need to draft and continue the improvement then maybe next off season we can acquire in FA one or two of those 1st day type deals to take our team over the top

This is where I disagree with you. It is worth it to make an investment in a long-term asset if he truly is a long-term asset. If Jackson can be signed and he mans the #1 CB spot for the next several years, it is absolutely worth it. He would make the entire secondary better. Hall would be lights out as a #2, and down the line.

To me, Jackson makes far more sense than Gilmore does. Gilmore is the kind of move you make when CB is one of the few holes holding you back from truly competing. But if you can lock up a #1 CB just hitting his prime, assuming he fits the scheme, you do it. It is a premium enough position to merit the expense.

I will say, though, as to your OL analogy, I agree there. What I like about how the Jets handled it is that they made the veteran moves at C and at a versatile OT. C is the position where you get your line calls. You need someone to anchor the line who has been there before, and knows the scheme. McGovern was a smart signing. Fant was smart because he gave Douglas tons of flexibility, both in the draft and in FA.

When it comes to the secondary, if I am bringing in a veteran presence, it is more likely to be at safety. You don't need someone who still plays and runs like a stud. You essentially need a play caller for your secondary, and you're going to find that far more often at S than at CB. So I would go with someone like Jackson at CB, slide Hall over to be one of the best #2 CBs in the game, and bring in a wily veteran S. You do that, your secondary goes from being a weakness to being a tremendous strength.

base line contract value right now is estimated $19.8 - 21.6 M annual, are you still saying long term we should invest now?

team is not ready to compete on a level to add a player that was once a priority free agent now cashing in on his boomed value...

sorry but we should continue the road we are on and short team friendly style contracts until after year three with this coaching regime then we can sign those luxury style deals to take our team over the top

I know what you are saying, but when you can add someone who truly would solidify a high value position for years to come, I think the investment may be worth it.

we'll see, but I truly believe they won't entertain him as a potential free agent...

Signing a veteran is a possibility on a one to two year deal, could continue the course with another draft pick...

I know this priority for this coaching staff which means front office as well is safety first... drafting edge and idl are both on the table, not saying they might add through the draft some depth but they have a plan...

also believe there is a sentiment that they would be okay to role with the corners they had last year starting, just saying...

The Brady philosophy is to go big. He might just be right.
No matter who runs the Jets, owns the Jets, makes decisions for the Jets- THEY HAVE BEEN CHEAP!
They wasted $millions in poor high draft picks in recent year, you all know,
Spend the money on proven players and finally dig themselves out of a never-ending hole.
