IMO if Mariota is on the board when the Jets pick, they have to take him. But he is by no means a lock in the NFL. he is from that dang air raid offense that is very difficult to transition to the NFL from. He never plays under center. As we are seeing with Smith, learning to play under center is no easy task. Smith still can't do it.
Lets look at Mariota's performance last night. All in all it was a bit disappointing. He started the game off very well. On the first drive he moved the team down the field, made some very nice throws, it should have ended in a TD. Mariota laid a beautiful touch pass into the end zone, that Marshall got his hands on but just couldn't control. He made the drive look easy. Second drive was OK, they came out with two FG's.
Then he seemed to fall into a funk. Missing open receivers, on a steady basis throwing high, and over throwing, as Elias mentioned.
Absolutely no offense, and generally bad play, by Zona, and an excellent running game, by the Ducks , put them in a solid lead.
At half time Zona was a pounded and beaten team. Mariota hadn't really contributed much to that with his arm. He should have had 2 interceptions that were flat dropped by the D. What he did was mostly with his legs. The yards were over inflated because of some excellent YAC by WR's on short throws. In all honesty he looked meh. A good NCAA QB, but a lot of red flags for the NFL.
In the 3rd Zona had packed it in. They were done. In all fairness to Mariota, there was a TD drive in the 3rd that he made 2 beautiful throws that were world class, and he played very well in the 3rd. Ducks put up 21.
In the end, if I were an NFL scout I would come away a bit concerned about making him the 1st pick in the draft. I'm not sure he can take that game to the NFL. A lot of what he does is with his legs. That doesn't fly in the NFL. Those guys have a lot of flash early, then wind up on IR.
He had a good game, but I don't know if it translates into the NFL. We'll get to see him at least once more against a good team in the playoffs.
If the draft were tomorrow, I would have to take him him early, sit him on the bench for a year, and pray.
Tonight we get to see Winston against Georgia Tech, who has one of the better D's in the country. I've seen Winston play 15 times, and really like him. He Plays out of a pro style offense, and has all the tools. He is off a very bad game against the Gators, worst I've seen him play.
Winston has had a high ankle sprain all season, has a noticeable limp. IMO it's why his stats are off from last year. No excuses though. He has to have a good game tonight, we may not get to see him in the playoffs if he doesn't. Georgia Tech is not going to roll over.
Should be a great game. I hope to start a game thread in the NCAA forum. If my wife doesn't drag me out tonight
