Harrison tendered at the 2nd rounder

Just saw on profootball talk that Harrison was tendered at the 2nd round level. if a team signs and the Jets don't match, the Jets receive that teams 2nd round pick.
Do we want to keep him or get another 2nd round pick?

Bizarre, Harris gets 15 mill gauranteed, but or stud nose tackle gets a2.5 mill tender?

the tender doesn't preclude a future contract. harrison is a restricted free agent. he's not yet eligible for free agency. it's the rules of the game. in a year at the latest, he will be eligible for a large contract. or he can get one this year if the jets give him an extension or another team signs him (at which point the jets have the right to match or would receive a 2nd round pick as compensation).

even if he got the 1st round tender (which i think he should have), he was only looking at a $3.35 mil deal.

That's kinda my point, he's a commodity that Rex will pay 2.5 plus a 2, but for 800k more they could have gotten a 1st. Why not resign him?

i agree they should have put a higher tender on him.

but it doesn't mean the game is over. another team would need to (i) offer him a large contract and be willing to give up a 2nd round pick for him, and (ii) the jets would have to decline to match said offer. only then would we lose him.

and until harrison signs his tender offer, the jets can still work on a long-term extension with him. the tender is just a "place holder" but doesn't preclude a long-term extension. teams needed to tender their RFAs by today. but long-term deals can still be agreed upon.

I don't understand this. People are acting like the Jets can't match any deal he signs.

I'd take a 2nd rd pick for Harrison right now

i disagree. we know harrison can play the game, and play it well. a 2nd round pick (especially if it's a late pick, like say NE's) is no certainty to be a productive player. and if we lose ellis in FA (he could sign elsewhere while the harrison situation plays out), we then have a gaping hole in the middle of the d-line. and then we need to use a draft pick on the spot which could be used elsewhere.

if it were a 1st round tender, i may agree, although i personally would still keep snacks. but not a 2nd

It's not that I think we will lose him, it's why get cute with it, we have 60 million in cap room, just sign the guy for 3.5 or 4 million, is almost intentional like they want to see if they can get a draft pick.

Its not that easy. This buys us time. Its pretty standard practice. I don't get what your problem is.

He isn't going anywhere.

It might be pretty smart in that MM is gauging the market one year early. The Jets can match and lock Harrison up with perhaps a de-escalated contract. In other words, pay a 2016 FA in 2015 $$. I could be wrong here, but it makes sense to me. If that is not the intent, and in fact we are fishing for added picks, then FO and CS must feel comfortable in being able to sign Ellis. To me Ellis is a pretty high ceiling guy, and the only things that have held him back are injuries and Harrison.

Harrison is a 2 down NT - in a league that is moving more and more towards short passes on early downs.

Look, harrison is an exceptional NT and by all accounts a good guy who has a great success story making it after being an UDFA. But the fact is that we have 3 players in Coples, Wilkerson and Richardson who would excel rotating in as DTs/DEs and have a competent backup, run-stopping NT in kenrick ellis who could be resigned for a LOT less then Harrison.

Losing harrison and getting a second round pick in return would not be the worst scenario for us at all.

They are creating more "white noise" for other GM's to distract them lol ..let other GM's lose some mental energy thinking about whether to sign him or not....we can match..or if they "poison pill" it..take their second....

this is a good point i hadn't considered. if they gave him the 1st round tender, it could have scared off other teams and thus they'd get no help setting his market price. by using the 2nd round tender, they may get an interested team who could offer him a contract, thereby establishing a market price. then they can decide whether or not to meet that price, and if not, get the 2nd round pick.

I for one hope Harrison stays. I like the way he plays - hard and with attitude.
He's an intricate part of our strength, a great defensive line.
You know what you have unlike a 2nd round draft choice which is completely unknown.

My only concern is that half the NFL teams run a 3-4 defense and Harrison 6'4"/350 (25) @ NT is a wanted commodity. We can't afford to lose both Kenrick Ellis 6'4"/346 and Snacks. I think we will be forced to match another team (Patriots,Bills) offer to keep him.
