I was only 12 at the time and not really. You may be right, and I do recall some sort of maneuvering on the OL but not sure. Why wouldn't Winston Hill have been assigned to Smith?

Whoa, I thought Sherman Plunkett was our RT ? He was one of the first OL well over 300 lbs. in the NFL. Winston Hill came along later after the SB 3 victory.

I'm pretty sure Hill was our starting LT in Super Bowl.

Just looked it up, also Big Sherman last played in 1967:

1968 season and Super Bowl III[edit]
From Wikipedia:
"Hill was an overpowering blocker who was instrumental in opening gaping holes for Jet running backs during the 1968 season, in which they won the Eastern division title with 11 wins and 3 losses and gained as a team 1608 yards rushing and 3574 yards passing. Hill also starred in the Third Professional AFL-NFL World Championship Game (Super Bowl III), as the Jets decimated the right side of the Baltimore Colts' defensive line with Ordell Braase at end against Hill and Fred Miller at tackle against Bob Talamini, so that Matt Snell gained 121 yards rushing in the Jets' 16–7 upset victory."

seems like a decent pickup. bowles should be familiar with him having faced him in division the last few years. like most, would have preferred iupati or franklin, but we can't force players to sign here. at the least, it should spell the end of the willie colon era. appreciate the toughness he brought, and he was a local kid, but the game has passed him by.

Yep.......Carpenter>Colone. Mild upgrade perhaps, but upgrade none-the-less.

Carpenter is young and IMO, his best football is ahead of him. He entered the league immature and earned the label he received. In recent years, the light seems to have gone on, and he's trending up. He was one of the players I wanted at the start as I wanted no part of Iupati and him leaving off his reputation. Iupati was bad in pass protection last year and looks to be starting a Fanecaesque decline. Good signing and probably got good value on the deal as well.

Dave Herman moved from RG to RT in the AFL championship game replacing Sam Walton who started at RT all year as a rookie. Herman started at RT in SB3. The OL was Hill, Talamini,Schmidt,Rasmussen and Herman.

I'm good with the Carpenter signing-he's better than who we have.

I like the signing because he can play every OL position except center. Have him replace Colon @ RG and slide him to RT after Breno's deal is done, and by then Dozier will be ready for RG. I'd leave Aboushi alone @ LG he looked good.

Go Jets....Cyborg

nice deal with carpenter. doesn't invest too much in him up front and cap hit won't be much if they need to cut bait after a year

http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/jets/post/_/id/49835/breaking-down-james-carpenters-contract

On Wednesday, the New York Jets made it official, signing former Seattle Seahawks guard James Carpenter to a four-year, $19.1 million contract. It includes $5 million in guaranteed money. A closer look:

Signing bonus: $2.5 million

2015: $1.5 million base (guaranteed), plus a $1 million roster bonus. Cap charge -- $3.125 million

2016: $4.45 million, plus a $250,000 roster bonus. Cap charge -- $5.325 million

2017: $4.45 million, plus $250,000 roster bonus. Cap charge -- $5.325 million

2018: $4.45 million, plus $250,000 roster bonus. Cap charge -- $5.325 million

Analysis: This is a good deal for both sides. It gives Carpenter some up-front money ($5 million in the first year), but it allows the Jets to cut him after a year if it doesn't work out. GM Mike Maccagnan was willing to pay more than $7 million a year for Mike Iupati or Orlando Franklin, the top guards on the market, but they ended up signing elsewhere. Carpenter comes in at $4.775 million per year, a cost-effective alternative to the big dogs. With the return of Willie Colon, the Jets are crowded at guard. They have two proven vets (Carpenter and Colon), two young players with some starting experience (Brian Winters and Oday Aboushi) and one waiting in the wings (Dakota Dozier).
