Jets Sign Buster Skrine

Yes, because I'm reading the entire article. Not just the part you emphasized in bold print. He is a high-energy, hustle guy, 2 year starter who improved every year and was well-liked by coaches and teammates. 18 PD and 4 INT's were better than Byron Maxwell's #'s.
Okay, we'll see, I hope you're right.

Good Move

we'll need to sign at least 6 or 7 DB's to make up for the loss of Kyle Wilson given his all-pro talent and effective play since we drafted him

Come to think of it Buster Skrine should be an upgrade. In fact Buster Brown would be also ... even without his dog Tige (old guy reference)

I'm not even sure we really overpaid. The guy is at worst a top slot CB, and is probably more a solid #2 .

byron maxwell got a 6-year, $60 million deal. he's started something like 18 games in his career, and played alongside sherman, thomas and chancellor. in 2014, he had 12 passes defended and 2 ints.

skrine had something like 14 PDs and 4 ints and is getting a 4-year, $25 million deal.

now all things being equal, i would have preferred maxwell as he's a bigger, more physical guy.

in this market, skrine may be a slight overpay, but definitely not being raped.

Skrine's a slot guy, pure and simple. He's not going to be our starting CB covering WO's. I understand he flashes some ability to do so but he was brought in to play slot at a high level and has to be considered a luxury product of our cap position. And having a lockdown slot guy is becoming a more valued position every year. I like this signing a lot. He's a 3rd down stopper. The guy who can take away that quick strike to the slot guy and keep the QB holding the ball looking for another option. Very sudden in space and mirrors slot WR's as well as flashing physicality.
Most will consider this an overpay but I see it as a great investment in a dominant defense.

From espn.com

This is what Browns defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil said recently about Skrine: "He's one of my favorite guys on the defense. He embodies 'Play Like a Brown.' I don't ever want to let good players walk out the door." Too late.

I honestly never heard of this cat before....I hope he's good, because, Milliner is on the cusp of being a bust.

My answer to that question and I rarely agree with him is a 5'9" CB is not a top tier CB IMO

He's not a top tier CB, and he's not being paid like one. Maxwell isn't a top tier CB either. Starter but not top level. He's getting 10.5.

What's not to like?

If I remember correctly that's probably 18 PD's more than our former nickle back Kyle Wilson. The cap has gone up 16% over the last two years so salaries are going up.

I never said I did not like the signing just that he was not a top tier CB bit he is better than Wilson in the slot.

HYATT™ has long coveted Tige as a Jets deep Safety. He has real bite to his play.

Skrine is a good signing, even if he's a rather diminutive CB who plays slightly taller than he is with that 37" vertical of his. It's the 4.34s speed that really makes him valuable. He can catch a WR from behind, which allows him to play a little closer to the LoS at the snap.

I like this signing. 25 yrs old and pretty good it appears. Hopefully with Revis (hopefully), Milliner, Skrine and this will be a real upgrade. Add in a recovered Mcdougle and the young CB (can't remember his name) that came on pretty strong for us towards the end of the year and we have drastically improved. Have to still figure out our safety situation. Is it Pryor and Jarrett or Allen?

To be Honest the Kid Williams was real good down the stretch.... I like the Skrine signing. My biggest concern is Milliner and McDougle with their injury history

Not having watched him, Cleveland fans are all saying how hard Skrine plays every week with hustle and energy. We certainly need a guy who can break passes consistently. That being said, we still need a #1 corner, and, in addition, if one of McDougle and Milliner pans out, we'll be very good.

He's one of those feisty ankle biters. They called him the terrier in Cleveland. He wouldn't let the #8 pick take his job last year and refused to allow himself to be categorized as a nickel back last year by the browns...very wise.

He's a kid with more heart and work ethic than most of the wrs he'll go against, plus that 4.34 and 37 inch vertical is nice. I hope Bowles can get his penalty numbers down. He is one of the top penalized CBs in the nfl...but because he in their shirts. I hope he improves in this area!

Right, this kid here is only 23 yrs old at 5'11" and 196 lbs. He came on strong and might be a key for this secondary next year. If we get Revis back with Skrine, Milliner and this kid Williams, our secondary with be very legit.
