ESPN's John Clayton essentially guaranteed that the Redskins would take Oregon QB Marcus Mariota if he's available at the No. 5 overall pick.
Clayton said there's no way Mariota would last until the Jets' No. 6 overall pick. "(Redskins owner) Dan Snyder might not think there’s quarterback issues, (but) Jay Gruden and everyone else in the front office thinks there’s quarterback issues," Clayton said. It's not a surprise the Redskins' revised front office is already questioning Robert Griffin III's future in Washington, but this will be a moot point if Mariota is a top-four pick, as expected.

I haven't seen Mariota mentioned as "a top-four pick" in weeks.

And if Washington does take him, I wonder what it would cost to pry RGIII away from them (not saying we'd want him, but I'd at least like to know the price) . . .

live in DC, and gruden cannot stand RG3. RG is not self aware at all and is completely lost in marketing his brand, not working hard to improve. Shanahana and now gruden cant stand the kid...and the kid just doesnt get it. RG3 is a disaster...like when Vince made the cover of ESPN the magazine, worst thing to ever happen to him...like RG3 getting the heisman.

With the Eagles possibly out of the Marcus Mariota sweepstakes, another team in the NFC East may be getting involved.

John Clayton of ESPN recently suggested that Washington would take Mariota at No. 5. Rich Tandler of CSN Washington has analyzed what it all possibly means.

For now, it’s likely a smokescreen aimed at creating trade value in the event Mariota makes it past the first four spots and Washington can then shop the pick, even if they’ll simply be allowing the Jets to come up one spot by making the Jets think that, absent a trade, Washington will take him.

Look for the speculation to intensify as soon as Thursday, if/when (when) Washington G.M. Scot McCloughan is spotted at the Oregon Pro Day workout.

So what would the cost be to swap with the Raiders at #4 ? They could still get their WR at our pick so there shouldn't be any reason they wouldn't consider it.

I'd have to think it's either at least our 2nd rounder or else a player of comparable value. Hate to do it but if we think Mariota even MIGHT be the answer, I wouldn't hesitate.

You're right. It depends on the motivation to trade on both sides. And taking Snyder out of the equation makes things more reasonable. Everyone knows you can fleece Danny Boy. That trade was more an aberration and the entire league knows it.

Good point, and another Duck so I like the parallel there! If a 2nd round pick moved them up from 12 to 3, then you'd think a 3rd rounder would get it done in this case. I suspect it won't be so easy but it's certainly worth the phone call if you're MM.

Well, QB instead of OLB/DE, so maybe more than a 3rd, but wont be 3 1s, 2 2nds, and a host of lower rd picks like the RG3 trade. I could see this year's one and 2nd, next year's 2nd and some late rd picks scattered in.

John Nerd Clayton if you have noticed is now being passed in "Breaking Stories", by Adam Schefter, Chris Mortenson and others, so he feels obligated to come up with an earth shaking story. Hell, I posted this last week to keep an eye out for the Redskins trading in front of us @5.

I would not trade up or down, but sit tight @ 6 and let the draft come to us. If Mariota falls to 6, then we'll take calls and either rape the Eagles, or draft him for ourselves. We are in the drivers seat be patient.
