Jets plummet to 2-11 with pitiful OT loss to Vikings
MINNEAPOLIS — In a game that seemed no one wanted to win, the Jets ultimately proved themselves to be the biggest losers.
The Vikings topped the Jets in overtime on a screen pass from Teddy Bridgewater to Jarius Wright that Wright took 87 yards for a touchdown and a 30-24 Minnesota win.
The loss drops the Jets to 2-11, their worst 13-game record since 1996, when they won just one game.
The Jets had the first possession of overtime, but their drive stalled at the Minnesota 43. The Vikings took over at their own 8. Bridgewater threw a screen to Wright, who was wide on the right side, he slipped out of Jaiquawn Jarrett’s tackle and then beat Sheldon Richardson in a foot race to the end zone.
The Jets sent the game into overtime on Nick Folk’s 44-yard field goal with 23 seconds left that tied the game at 24-24. It was Folk’s fifth field goal of the game. Geno Smith set the kick up with an 18-yard scramble that got to the Minnesota 32. He nearly threw an interception on third down, but the Vikings could not pull it in and Folk got his chance to tie the game.
The Vikings threatened to win the game in regulation as they marched 41 yards in two plays with 16 seconds left, but kicker Blair Walsh missed a 56-yard field-goal attempt.
The Jets tied the game early in the fourth quarter at 21-21 on another Folk field goal. The Jets went 0-for-5 in the red zone, constantly settling for field goals.
Minnesota took a 24-21 lead on a Walsh 20-yard field goal with 5:28 left in the game after the Jets’ defense managed a big stand to prevent the touchdown and keep the Jets’ hopes alive.
The Jets lost wide receiver Percy Harvin late in the game to an ankle injury. He did not play on the final drive of regulation or in the overtime. He had a big game against his former team with six catches for 124 yards and a touchdown.
The Jets were led on defense by Richardson, who sacked Bridgewater three times, once for a safety.
The game could not have started any worse for Smith, who threw a pick-six on his first pass. Smith threw a play-action pass intended for Harvin that linebacker Gerald Hodges intercepted and took 27 yards for a touchdown, giving the Vikings a 7-0 lead 12 seconds into the game.
Smith bounced back, though, with a 45-yard pass to Harvin on the next drive, but the drive ended at the Vikings 44 after Smith was sacked by blitzing safety Harrison Smith.
The Jets’ defense picked up the offense and got some points. Richardson, who had a monster game, sacked Bridgewater in the end zone for a safety, making it 7-2.
Smith put the Jets up with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Harvin. Harvin made a beautiful adjustment on the ball and put the Jets up 9-7.
Then, the Jets cornerbacks struck. The woeful secondary was at its worst for most of the day. The first big play they gave up was Bridgewater hitting Charles Johnson for a 56-yard touchdown. Johnson blew past Jets corner Darrin Walls on the play.
All day long Rex Ryan searched for answers at cornerback, rotating Marcus Williams, Walls and Phillip Adams. All of them gave up some big plays.
Two Folk field goals in the first quarter made it 14-12 Vikings.
Bridgewater hit another big play early in the second quarter, throwing it to Johnson, who was open after Williams and safety Calvin Pryor collided. It was a 22-yard catch that Johnson fumbled into the end zone, where Vikings fullback Jerome Felton recovered it for a touchdown and a 21-12 Vikings lead.
The Jets put together a nice 11-play drive and it looked like they would score, but Chris Ivory fumbled at the Vikings’ 5-yard line and Minnesota cornerback Captain Munnerlyn recovered.
The Jets were awful in the red zone all day long. They settled for another Folk field goal just before halftime to cut the Vikings lead to 21-15.
