Jets Sign S Marcus Gilchrist

While he does have coverage skills he's never really played FS. I'm concerned that our SS and FS are 5-11 and 5-10 respectively. Not sure that's what you want with the likes of Gronkowski roaming in the secondary. I agree with Cy that Cromartie would be a great candidate to move to FS.

We need LB help not anymore safeties or CB's ? It was obvious to me that Pryor is not suited to play centerfield as a FS. Don't we still have these safeties on the roster:
1) Pryor SS
2) Landry FS
3) Allen SS
4) Jarrett S
5) Miles S

Go Jets...Cyborg

If this signing goes through we may have a bit of a "log-jam" at the Safety position.
It should be a very competitive training camp and pre-season at that position.

Me too, I think that was a terrific suggestion by Cy and I've always felt Cro had the physical attributes and skills that would translate well to FS. Not a physical FS, but a legit centerfielder which is my first priority at the position.

Skrine was the #2 CB for Cleveland and Bowles base defense is the nickel; my point, Skrine can play outside or inside. So vs the Pats, since all 3 CBs will be on the field most of the time, Cro likely slides inside on Gronk...he's done it before.

If we sign Gilchrist, he's a rare safety that is actually a CB and can cover slot WRs...

Invaluable trait. It's a good signing if we get him. Lot of flexibility on defense. We're very close to fielding a competitive team less the QB position but as you recall, we went to 2 AFC championship games without a QB.

Jets still reaching out to safeties. Have Marcus Gilchrist talks stalled?

The Jets had wined and dined free agent safety Marcus Gilchrist of the Chargers on Wednesday night, but it's since been radio silence as to whether the two sides were able to come to an agreement on a contract.

And now comes word the Jets are still contacting other safeties, which could be a sign the Gilchrist negotiations have soured.

A person with knowledge of the situation confirmed to NJ Advance Media that the Jets had reached out to former Bears safety Chris Conte, who wound up coming to terms with the Bucs on Thursday morning. That person spoke on condition of anonymity.

Word of the Jets' interest in Conte was first reported by Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, who also said the Jets had a visit with Conte lined up if Conte couldn't strike a deal with the Bucs—a pretty good indication the Jets may already have their sights set elsewhere.

And another person familiar with the goings-on told NJ Advance Media the Jets had made an inquiry as late as Thursday morning about another free agent safety.

Three ways to look at this:

1. The Jets have given up on signing Gilchrist and are trying to bring in someone else before the market dries up.

2. The Jets-Gilchrist negotiations are still active, but the Jets are preparing a contingency in the event they break down.

3. The Jets are trying to gain leverage in the Gilchrist talks by contacting other safeties.

A negotiation is a delicate, time-consuming process. Everything's fluid, and every detail must be accounted for. But the Jets are clearly readying for the moment Marcus Gilchrist leaves North Jersey without a contract.

Big Macc is the anti Idzik...HOPEFULLY Super Bowles can coach

I'm as happy as any Jets fan about the moves, but...

Games are won on Sunday. Not in March. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Which is why it's ALL on Bowles.

Everyone says "you gotta have a franchise QB", but in reality it's the coaching that makes or breaks a season. If this guy's legit, we're set for the next decade no matter who's on the roster. And if not, we can get all the talent in the world and it's not gonna get us anywhere . . .

If he and the CS can adjust and make the changes on the fly then I believe the Jets will be fine

I live in Scottsdale AZ the guy can coach... he is a no nonsense (think anti Rex) straight forward coach and holds players accountable.

Ghilcrist was taken #50 in 2011 out of Clemson and had a freakish combine. He ran 4.40, had a 38 inch vertical, and 26 reps of 225lbs.

2011 Season[edit]
Gilchrist was taken with the 50th overall pick in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. As a rookie, Gilchrist won the team’s nickel job right out of training camp and he earned his first start just four games into the season. Not surprisingly, that day’s opponent, the Miami Dolphins, went right after the rookie corner, but Gilchrist intercepted the first pass thrown in his direction and his defense helped the Chargers to a victory.[2]

§2012 Season[edit]
In 2012, Gilchrist played in all 16 games last season and he made four starts. His 76 tackles were third-most among the secondary and fifth-most on the team. He also collected his first sack and broke up five passes.[3]

Gilchrist on May 14, 2013 was moved to the strong safety position by Chargers Staff for the 2013 season.

§2013 Season[edit]
Gilchrist started all 16 games, finishing the year with 77 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 sack,1 Forced Fumble, and 5 passes defended. In week 15, against the Denver Broncos Gilchrist was moved back to the nickel back position due to injuries in the Chargers secondary.

So now the Jets have a top 5 front seven, and a top 5 secondary.

How many teams can say that?
