Post Free Agency Mock Draft

Not to be too much of a debbie downer but I think Cooper's ceiling is "moderately" high. I don't think he's the athlete that guys like White or DGB or even Chris Conley are. He will never be the guy that overpowers anyone with his speed and athleticism (think Randy Moss or Megatron), but he will be the guy that's solid in all aspects of the position. IMO, he is closer to guys like Jordy Nelson, Jerry Rice, or Chris Carter who dominated the position without the amazing physical gifts of some of their peers. Whether he is as successful as those guys still remains to be seen.

I have no complaints if we draft Cooper and he turns out like Nelson, Rice or Carter.

The only way I see the Jets passing on an edge rusher is if they don't like any of the 3-4 worthy of the pick. I find that really hard to believe. Amari Cooper wouldn't be a bad pick, but where's he gonna play? Marshall and Decker wide out, Kerley in the slot. Four WR sets?

I'm feeling that it's a slam dunk that the Jets will take either Mariota or an edge rusher. I'll be shocked if it isn't. The value is there at 6, and it's really the only obvious need we have on the defense. I wouldn't be shocked to see Scherff go there, though.

Cooper would push Kerley to # 4 so fast he wouldn't know what hit him. :scarface-smiley-emo

That said, I think you're right and its most likely going to be one of the edge rushers. This was more about who I would have taken in that spot, but I'm pretty sure the Jets will take one of the edge rushers and I'm totally fine with that.

6) Amari Cooper WR 6'1"/210 - Tide. Here's a chance to get a young fast clean kid, no trouble gym rat type. Marshall is no spring chicken. Julio Jones Jr..

37) Eli Harold OLB 6'4"/240 - UVA. He's a hair below Fowler & Gregory, but just as good as Beasley in the ACC, plus Virginia runs a 3-4 D.

70) Cody Prewitt FS 6'2"/215 - Ole Miss. One of the best FS in College football. If we sign Cromartie as a FS then draft my boy from W-F Kevin White CB.

101) Nate Orchard DE/OLB/ILB 6'3"/252 - Utah. This kid will replace Harris next year. We need versatile LB's with speed & bulk.

5) Traded Brandon Marshall

6) Traded for Percy Harvin

7A (198) Ali Marpet G 6'4"/315 - Hobart. Small College animal. He beat up the big boys in bowl game.

7B (199) Justin Manton P 6'3"/198 - Louisiana-Monroe. It might be time for a new punter

Go Jets...Cyborg

Personally, I like my mock draft better than Charlie's. Note: I completed this draft before we signed Gilcrest FS, so I might now change Cody Prewitt FS.

:smiley-finger004: Looks like some other poster also had Cooper WR @ 6 and Eli Harold OLB @ 37, oh wait that was me !:smiley-dance017:

Marpet's going a lot higher than RD 7, Cy, the secret is out on him. First he received a rare combine invitation for D3 players, which means the scouts and GM's were already intrigued to begin with, then he had a very good performance at the combines to validate what they liked about him. I'll be surprised if he gets out of the 4th RD, maybe the 3rd.

I'm with you. I don't have a problem with Cooper at #6 as long as we get that pass rushing/coverage LB in the second or third round. We need two o-linemen and a RB and that will be our five picks. I was waiting to talk to on maddog sports radio on Sirius about our draft pick possibilities while I was driving in the rain for about a hour. Got tired of waiting so I just hung up, Lol.

The Jets draft is going to be based on the answer to 2 questions

1) Do the Jets think Mariota is an elite franchise caliber QB?

2) Will he be there at 6 when the Jets pick?

If the answer to both is Yes, our draft looks one way, if the answer to either is no, then the draft looks a different way

Agreed.

I don't know how the Jets will answer those questions, but for me its (1) NO and (2) YES

How bout you?

I would agree only because most or everyone (including me) is looking at him as a developmental project. If that wasn't the case and he is ready now then obviously were all wrong here. If he develops correctly he may end up being elite as well. Point being, the Jets should pass on him only for that reason, especially with LBs like Fowler Jr and Beasley etc and WRs like Cooper and White etc... Just know, we all may end up eating crow on this kid down the road.

Added note: If the LB or WR we draft turns out to be a franchise player and Geno turns out to be very good or serviceable at the least, then I guess we won't regret it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on shane ray? Is anyone as high on him as I am? I feel like he can be the best pass rusher in this draft. quick feet, active hands, good pursuit...

Yeah, I've posted here that he seems to have limited mobility with short, choppy steps and one-directional movements. Take a look at his game tape at draftbreakdown.com. I don't like him at all. His strength and hustle have gotten him a lot of coverage sacks but he has no moves and limited athleticism. I think he's a 5-6 sack guy in the pros. But don't believe me, look at his tape. Tell us what you think.

3rd round? Good luck. And even with the 2nd. They fly off the shelves rapidly.

The Sirius NFL guy's feel that Ray is strictly a DE, and will not translate very well to OLB.

I love Ray, but thats the thing thats scaring me for the Jets.

A lot of people are saying that he can't play OLB, that he's strictly a 4-3 DE

I've read that too. Ive seen him sliding and Dupree and Thompson rising. Gregory and Fowler seem like the top 2 pass rushers at the top of the boards, and then its up for debate start at #3 with Dupree, Shaq Thompson, Beasely, and Ray. I think Ray goes #8 to ATL.

Thompson? I don't think he's a 3-4 OLB. He's 228 soaking wet and didn't actually play at that weight. I think he'll catch on with a 4-3 team.

I agree that Dupree will be a mid-1st as he's moving up. I like him and even Odiguizuwa better than Ray. Also, Eli Harold. Those guys are all 1st round grades.
Getting into the top of the 2nd round range we have a wildcard in Preston Smith who is moving up from his workout from Miss St who raised a lot of eyebrows as well as his teammate Bernardrick McKinney (could be a sleeper at OLB) who the Jets had run outside rushing drills. I also like Danielle Hunter in the 2nd.

I tried to use the blanket statement of "pass rusher" in my remark. A lot of teams need pass rushers, but not all pass rushers will be used the same.

You cant just take the best pass rusher, you have to take the best pass rusher for your system. I threw Thompson out there because a team like Atlanta or the Giants may like him more than Ray...both may be better fits for their systems than ours, but will be viewed as pass rushers in this draft class, IMO.

I dont want Thompson for the Jets, agreed, I'd prefer Dupree (270lbs) or Beasely if Gregory is gone...but both Beasely (236) and Gregory (235 at Combine but reports are he played at 245lbs before getting ill in January) are more pass rush specialists as rookies that hypefully grow into 3-4 OLB starters...I think Dupree can push for starting reps as a rookie; however, I dont grade that as a high value when considering who to take. If im the jets picking 6, I take who they think will be best of those 3, even if it takes that chosen rookie 1 year of being a pass rushing specialist before being ready for full time duties.

I do think Dupree is the "one" OLB prospect that may be ready to start Day 1, but I also see him as an Orakpo type. Dupree also has injury concerns as he enters the NFL.

Im still on board with pass rusher rd 1. I know some feel we've addressed defense enough...but the strength of this draft at the top is pass rusher...so go with the strength of the draft class, we did the opposite of that last year, let's not do that again...

Thanks for the info. I agree 100% that the Jets will get one of those guys up there to include Fowler who is probably least likely to drop to us but could still very well happen. I could easily see a team go for Gregory ahead of Fowler. And a lot of time between now and the draft. The Jets could easily place Dupree ahead of all of those guys.
