2 of the 3 CBS guys have us going with Beasley in round 1

This would be an excellent pick. He is a top notch player and athlete and his best football is still ahead of him. Most probably don't know that the guy started off as a RB in college. He made the switch to 4-3 DE for his sophomore season and basically blew up day one. Now he is learning the nuances of LB and he will only get better. He is plenty athletic and fluid enough for the position so the transition from 4-3 DE shouldn't be much of a concern.

I also think he fits our need the best because he is equally adept covering backs in space as he is rushing the passer. Just what we need in our LB corps.

It's still a bit early yet but I think our #6 is going to be him or Mariota, with Gregory the next most likely suspect after those two.

point - how do you know he is able to cover RBs in space? didn't he play a 4-3 DE in college? did they have him also playing some LB or dropping into coverage from a DE position?

I've seen him do it. It's not completely uncommon to drop your DE in coverage in different zone schemes. This is a player with 11 pass break-ups from his DE spot in college. As mentioned above, as a RB in high school and early college, he is nimble and can turn his hips. He is made for OLB far more than his position of DE in college. This is a quote from an AFC defensive coordinator:

"He's pretty much what you are looking for if you are a 3-4 team. I think he can play inside or outside because he moves so well. Out of the top-rated outside 'backers, he's the best, in my opinion." -- AFC defensive coordinator

thanks.

that's my biggest concern on drafting someone to play rush OLB with the #6 pick. for most of these guys, it's a brand new position as most college teams run a 4-3 and these guys are usually hands on the ground pass rushers. maybe it's the long scar of gholston, but i get worried taking a player at such a prime draft position and having them learn a new position in the nfl. (and for the record, i'm not comparing any of these guys to gholston)

at least wrt beasley, it sounds like he's done it a little in college. obviously this is where scouts make their money in determining which of these guys can transition to the position on the next level.

I think Beasley would be a great pick and the more I look at tape on him the more I like him. As PD stated above he does have passes defended (9 in two years) where a guy like Shane Ray does not. We need our LB's to be able to cover a zone or a player since we kept Harris and Pace (slow). Other than Mariota he is growing into being my top pick.

If Rex had a #1 pick this year he would be all over Vic Beasley 6'2"/235 who he has loved for years while visiting his son @ Clemson.

I'm like Hobson, I have a bad taste in my mouth about converting a DE to OLB after our experience with Vernon Gholston. The best coverage LB is Shaq Thompson 6'2"/231 who looks like a safety, but would be a huge reach @ #6 .

Dante Fowler 6'2"/261 would be my #1 OLB choice but he will probably be gone by our pick. I would draft Eli Harold OLB 6'4"/235 from UVA who has been both a OLB & DE in UVA 3-4 defense with our 2nd round pick (37), after I draft Amari Cooper @ 6.

It's a very plausible pick

We might very well have Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Quentin Coples, and Vic Beasley rushing the passer next season with Revis, Cromartie, Skrine, and maybe Milliner or Williams in coverage

I admit I've never seen the kid play, and even if I had I wouldn't know what technical aspects to focus in on.

Having said that, I was sold on the kid after reading this:

http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2015/3/6/8135681/vic-beasley-breakdown

Anyone being considered at #6 is a "beast" by default. But I loved hearing about his fundamentals -- same reason I'd want Cooper over White. While strength may not always translate to the NFL level, intellect does and if this report is close to being accurate, I'd fully expect the kid to not only excel at this level, but also put in the work to improve on his weaknesses. Especially coming to a team that's already stacked and has a smart defensive coach running the show.

Of course, if the article is nothing but biased homerism, I'll gladly stand corrected. But until proven otherwise this kid is tops on my wish list . . .

Cy, I like Eli Harold quite a bit too. He might be my top choice at #37 if we go with Mariota at #6 .

Beasely/Petty > Mariota/Harold, in my opinion. But it's close and I wouldn't be upset either way.

If the Jets didn't draft a player because of having a bad past experience we'd never have a TE, QB, safety, punter or K on this team. There are plenty success stories of DE's changing to OLB in the NFL (John Abraham, Demarcus Ware). I agree I still get that uneasy feeling thinking about Gholston but adding an edge rusher to this team is something we haven't had since JA and could make us a top 3 defense. Just seeing Sir Tom's head knocked off would be enough. While I might agree Fowler might be the better pro we both think he will be long gone. Like Cooper but rather have the pass rusher.

Interestingly enough, currently on the CBS web site, Brugler has Mariota, Prisco has Beasley, and Bob Rang, who is one of my favorite draft guru's, still has Beasley posted as his pick at #6 . He has Mariota falling to Cleveland at 12.

His concern with Mariota was, could he play under center in the NFL?

I recently saw him on CBS doing a mock, and he selected Mariota at 6, saying at the combine Mariota did an excellent job in the throwing drills from under center, and put his concern at ease. That is the selection that is being reported in the media right now.

http://nyjetsfanatics.com/showthread.php/1431-Jets-Weekly-Mock-Draft-Round-up

Further on the CBS web site Rang's big board, which was recently updated, he has Mariota ranked #4 , and Beasley at #10 .

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/big-board

Here is Rang's quote from the site

"4. Marcus Mariota, QB, 6-4, 222, 4.52, rJr, Oregon: Mariota's mesmerizing physical traits captivate scouts and there is no question that he earned the Heisman Trophy and was the key to Oregon's run to the national championship game. Mariota will be making a difficult transition from Oregon's spread offense but quieted some critics with an impressive throwing session at the combine, showing surprising rhythm and accuracy while "dropping back" -- something he rarely did with the shotgun and pistol formation offense of the Ducks."

With that said of the 31 national media mocks that were quoted in the link above, 16 out of 31 mockers, selected either Winston, or Mariota at 6.

Beasley is an excellent prospect in this draft, but IMO with the way the Jets roster, and QB situation is now, if Mariota is on the board I run up the isle with the selection

I like Beasley, but I think Alvin Dupree is better ... much bigger, just as fast, stronger and a more violent hitter.

My TOP 5 for the Jets:

1. Dante Fowler
2. Kevin White
3. Amari Cooper
4. Randy Gregory
5. Alvin Dupree

Dupree and Gregory is a close call.

Gregory is more highly regarded right now, but IMO he has a lower floor due to weight concerns (built like Aaron Maybin).

Dupree, IMO, is bust proof. At worst he's a good 3 to 4 down player and a consistent 10 to 12 Sacks Guy. At best he's an elite edge rusher and monster verses the run too.

Yeah Dupree has emerged as a super interesting prospect. His 4.56 at the combine, at his size, is amazing. That is going to have him moving way up in the draft IMO.

There are a lot of very good pass rushers in this draft. If Mariota isn't there, I suspect the Jets will select one. Thing is, if history is any judge half of these guys will go bust in the NFL. Sure hope the Jets get the right one.

I'm told Alvin Dupree looked tremendous in position drills yesterday, which should come as no surprise to anyone. Coupled with his incredible testing at the combine, as well as the pass-rush skills he displayed the past two seasons, I struggle to see how he gets out of the top 15.

Dupree had dinner with the Pittsburgh Steelers the night before the pro day (general manager and head coach amongst those in attendance) and also met with the Indianapolis Colts.

Yesterday, Dupree met with the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, lunched with the New Orleans Saints and then met with the New York Jets.

Yeah, 55 mentioned this possibility a few days ago of Dupree being the guy. I'm going to shut my mouth for a while as I've just been flip-flopping. I can't help but love Dupree on tape. The guy has a high motor and is a violent striker with dogged pursuit. Very athletic for his size. Very stout and strings out the run.

Nice to see the Jets have been looking and talking with him.
