How concerned are Jets with Marshall's off-field issues?

How concerned are you? This article makes some great points that i think his off field behavior will not be an issue. Three people on the staff are not concerned....

When the Jets traded for wide receiver Brandon Marshall just before the start of free agency, they acquired a player with obvious talent who also has a penchant for trouble-making.

(Yes, I'm aware that sweeping all of Marshall's transgressions into a catch-all euphemism like "trouble-making" can have the effect of watering them down, especially since Marshall's got more than one domestic violence allegation buried somewhere on his scouting report. But I really need to get to the point here.)

The Jets simply did what NFL teams often do: They weighed the opportunity cost of Marshall's transformative ability against his penchant for causing problems, even among his teammates. (In Marshall's defense, he does have borderline personality disorder, and his advocacy on behalf of mental illness is admirable.)

"We have people who personally have history with him," general manager Mike Maccagnan said. "We researched him thoroughly."

Those "people who personally have a history with" Marshall include Jets head coach Todd Bowles and receivers coach Karl Dorrell, who were assistant coaches on the Dolphins during Marshall's time there. Marshall is already on record with his deep admiration for Bowles. One other person who likely has some understanding of Marshall is Rex Hogan, the Jets' new senior director of college scouting. Hogan had previously worked in the Bears' scouting department, so even if he likely didn't encounter Marshall directly, he no doubt has entree to plenty of people who did.

Maccagnan said the Jets pounced as soon as it became apparent the Bears were looking to deal Marshall.

"It happened kind of quickly, but we felt, really from a value/return standpoint, we thought that gave us the best option to add a player of Brandon's caliber to our organization" Maccagnan said. "I think it was, in my mind at least, kind of an easy decision to make when we went through the process."

There's a less-than-encouraging parallel to draw from the Jets' recent experience with wideout Santonio Holmes, a former Super Bowl MVP with the Steelers who proved to be more trouble with the Jets than he was worth, especially after the Jets gave him a big contract. (Holmes is now a free agent reduced to doing Google hangout interviews to plead his case from what looks like the spartan bedroom of some condo somewhere. Yes, Santonio. Your injuries are why teams have stopped calling. Sure thing, dude.)

But, three things:

1. Marshall is not Holmes (obviously, but you get my drift). Nothing guarantees that the Jets' experience with him will be the same as it was with Holmes.

2. The Holmes-Jets situation was two general managers and another head coach ago. This is an entirely new oufit now.

3. Marshall is essentially on a prove-it contract. He's guaranteed to make $7.5 million in base pay this year, plus a $200,000 workout bonus, per overthecap.com. But that's it: If Marshall proves to be too much of a headache, or if his trouble-making—there's that phrase again—outweighs his performance, the Jets can void the final two years of his deal outright.

Time will tell soon enough if Marshall is worth the risk.

I've said in the past that the Holmes trade was NOT a bad one -- I'd take that level of talent for a mid-round pick any day of the week. Our mistake with him was the ridiculous contract he "earned" well after he first joined the team.

There's not much Marshall can do to make me regret giving up a 5th rounder (and getting a 7th back). I'll be upset if he doesn't produce to the level we hope he will, but I still think it was DEFINITELY a risk worth taking . . .

No doubt the trade was good for the Jets, but just for insurance reasons, draft Amari Cooper @ 6 then I won't worry about Marshall.

I vote to give the guy a chance. He had issues that he didn't understand, and has since came to understand those issues and deal with them. I just watched a Football Life episode done on him on NFL Network. Hard to watch that show and not pull for the guy, so that is exactly what I am doing. If Jets fans support this guy, the way only Jets fans can, and make him Green & White family, I firmly believe that he will be one of the best moves we have ever made. Guys, we have not had a receiver like this since Key.

Will he take a step back every now and then? Maybe, but then don't we all.........

I don't see an issue here !!!! I read a lot about Marshall's "off field issues" but have no context as to what the issue is?, when it happened? or the underlying story behind the story.

I think its all nonsense.

Not concerned as long as he is still on his treatment plan. Plaxico was our top red zone receiver his last year in the league, and he wasn't even trying. This guy will be big for us. We still should draft his successor this year in cooper. That way there's a smooth transition in the future, and if cooper doesn't pan out we have time to draft others.

The biggest concern I have with Marshall is going to be on the field stuff. I think he might flip out on Geno for making bad decisions and make the situation even worse, but I don't think he is going to get into trouble or anything

Not at all, he is the face of mental disorders pretty much since he realized what his issues are and got help. He wants to win more then anything right about now. Don't think he's ever made the playoffs in fact. With that said, as long as he keeps getting the help he needs. Continues to take on the responsibility he has for his cause, he will be just fine.

The one question about that is, with geno being so passive, you don't know if he missed or receiver turned wrong direction. At least you know marshall and decker will be healthy and running pro routes.
Also remember our division is stronger on the d line this year and weaker in secondary. That leads to geno getting pressure and needing tall receivers to snag bad throws.

Agree !!! From what I have read .... his "issues " can be attributed to an undiagnosed medical condition .... so as long as he stays on his meds, he should be just fine
