At least John Idzik has NY Jets in chase to draft Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariotta

The Jets are tied with four other 2-11 dumpster fires for the league’s worst record, but find themselves fourth in the updated draft order when strength of schedule is factored.

Cheer up, Captain Jet, the team’s terrible season could put Gang Green in position to land game-changing QB in Florida State’s Jameis Winston or Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.

The Jets inched closer to the promise of a brighter future at 4:17 p.m. on Sunday with loss No. 11 before the stinkin’ Raiders blew up the whole damn feel-good vibe a few hours later.

Tony Sparano (it figures) stuck it to his former employers by beating the 49ers over the weekend to drop Oakland out of the coveted top spot of the 2015 NFL draft, the pot of gold at the end of a black-and-blue rainbow for NFL bottom feeders.

The Jets are tied with four other 2-11 dumpster fires for the league’s worst record, but find themselves fourth in the updated draft order when strength of schedule is factored.

Now, the really bad news: The exact wrong teams currently are ahead of Woody Johnson’s organization in the race for quarterback prospects Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans, both searching for a franchise signal caller, hold the top two spots with three weeks left. The Jaguars, who drafted Blake Bortles in May, are third, ahead of the Jets and Raiders. Comically dysfunctional Washington (3-10) is the longshot to grab the No. 1 pick.

If these draft positions hold, the Jets could miss out on the top two quarterbacks at a time when the franchise desperately needs one. It’s enough to make season-ticket holders toss their cookies in unison.

The silver lining to this embarrassing season was supposed to be the right to land a potential franchise quarterback in May.

Suck for the Duck.

If the Jets keep stinking for a few more weeks, they could keep Oregon's Marcus Mariota in green.

Suffer for the Seminole.

Gang Green fans have a tendency to wallow in self-pity, but if the Jets don’t even have the chance to draft Mariota or Winston, who could blame their fans from going clinically insane?

All hope, however, isn’t lost.

Although Rex Ryan naturally wants to beat the hapless Titans on Sunday, he sure could do the franchise a solid by coming up short in the Music City. Coaches and players, of course, are wired to win, so expect full effort this weekend, but a 12th loss would certainly help matters in the grand scheme.

The Jaguars and Raiders, the two teams unlikely to be in the market for a quarterback, still have a solid chance to go 1-2 in the upcoming draft. Jacksonville has a 33.84% chance of having the No. 1 pick, according to analytical website numberFire.com. Oakland has an 18.72% chance followed by Tampa Bay (17.58%) and Tennessee (17.02%).

As long as the Raiders and/or Jaguars have a Top 2 selection, the Jets could be in business.

The Jets general manager, Mr. TBD, would be positioned to trade up a few spots for the chance to get Mariota or Winston. However, that option likely is off the table if the Bucs and Titans claim the Top 2 spots.

Jameis Winston's physical talents are unquestioned, but his off-field issues are a concern.

The good news for the Jets: The Titans, who stink in every imaginable way, have the easiest schedule among the Feeble Five down the stretch with a collective opponents’ winning percentage of .333 (13-26). So, there’s still hope that that fraudulent team can squeeze out a win or two to slide down the draft.

The better news for the Jets: The Raiders could lose out with games against three teams with winning records (Chiefs, Bills and Broncos) to climb to No. 1 or No. 2. If Oakland grabs the top spot, they Raiders will undoubtedly shop the pick to a quarterback-needy team. The folks at One Jets Drive should keep their fingers crossed.

The best possible news for the Jets: Hit the lottery and grab the No. 1 pick by losing the final three games and hoping everything else falls into place. Johnson’s franchise has an 11.82% chance of having the top overall pick, according to numberFire.com. Those odds jump to 20.8% if you believe footballoutsiders.com.

Mariota, the soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winner, and Winston, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, have their fair share of critics, but the Jets need one of them to provide hope for the future.

J ets fans have suffered enough thanks to an overmatched general manager, handcuffed head coach and poor planning. This wasted two-year experiment with Geno Smith should reap some rewards. Surely, Idzik’s terrible choices and rambling, out-of-touch midseason press conference that helped turn the Jets into a league laughingstock didn’t happen in vain.

There needs to be a payoff for this star-crossed franchise.

The football gods must show some sympathy here. Missing out on Mariota and Winston would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Well sure, I'd much rather be trying to figure out what the scenario is for the Jets to get into the playoffs then get the first pick in the draft.

But it is what it is. If we don't want to be doing this again next year, we better be hoping the Jets lose to the Titans

I really hope we lose this one against the Titans. Also, **** idzik.

Lastly, I'm not sure why we'd have to trade up with Oak? They're not taking either of the two QBs, and what team is so QB needy that they'd trade valuable assets to move up to pick one of these risks. This isn't Luck/RG3 where both were can't miss prospects (with Luck obviously being the definition of "can't miss").

Except Luck, there have been no cant miss prospects in the last 5-7 drafts. These two, are probably next best, after Luck, to come out in awhile.

After the football season ends, these QB's will be examined and dissected, and flaws will be magnified. Happens every year. Winston and Mariota won't go #1 and #2 . We should have a chance at one or the other.
