I'm all for the signing if it means they are trading or cutting Geno. Maybe we can package Geno during the draft and get something for him.
I'd be real surprised if Smith has any trade value at all at this point. But it does seem that this signing rumor has gotten some legs. I was thinking it was a BS rumor. but apparently Bowles has acknowledged the interest in Schaub.

Remember Matt Schaub? Yeah, that Matt Schaub. Rumor has it Schaub has the New York Jets on his short list of potential suitors. The veteran quarterback could help bolster the Jets quarterback situation, providing great depth and competition at the position. (photo credit: espn.com)
Matt Schaub, the former Houston Texan, Atlanta Falcon and Oakland Raider, remains a free agent looking for a new home. New York Jets General Manager,
Mike Maccagnan, has stated that the Jets have real interest in signing the veteran quarterback. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Schaub is expected to sign with the Jets, Ravens or Falcons. Schaub had a lost season last year, ultimately landing the veteran backup role for the Oakland Raiders.
The Oakland Raiders cut Schaub, the 33-year-old signal caller, this offseason. The Raiders started rookie quarterback Derek Carr, out of Fresno State, in the first game of the season last year, against the New York Jets. Carr played well during that game, but the Jets were able to pull away with a rare victory. Matt Schaub never had a chance to succeed in Oakland, only throwing a total of 10 passes last season.
Matt Schaub could provide the Jets with depth at a position in which there has been no depth for years. Having 3 decent quarterbacks (maybe 4 pending the NFL Draft), rather than 1 decent quarterback is a luxury in the National Football League. Imagine the Arizona Cardinals had a backup quarterback last season. Nobody could have predicted Carson Palmer going down with an ACL tear. The ship that was the Arizona Cardinals sunk as soon as Palmer was injured. Who was the defensive coordinator of that Arizona Cardinal team? Connection – Jets head coach Todd Bowles. If anybody knows how valuable depth is at the quarterback position, it’s Todd Bowles.
So, hypothetically, let’s say that Ryan Fitzpatrick is the week 1 starter for the New York Jets. Fitzpatrick has a history of being injured and not playing a full season. Fitz is coming off of a broken leg with the Houston Texans. When he was with the Buffalo Bills, Fitzpatrick had an array of different injuries including concussions and broken ribs. In today’s NFL, concussions can have a player sidelined for weeks. I guess the question Jet fans need to ask themselves is this: When Fitzpatrick goes down, who would you rather have, Geno Smith or Matt Schaub? I think you know my answer.
Take a look at Matt Schaub’s stats while with the Houston Texans:
88 Starts
23,221 Passing Yards
124 Touchdowns
78 Interceptions
2 Pro Bowls
