Geno Smith worked out with Tom House (Brady's personal QB coach) during offseason

Geno Smith went looking for help from the man who helps Tom Brady.

The Jets quarterback revealed Monday that he spent some time this offseason working out with Tom House, who is Brady’s personal coach. House also has worked with Tim Tebow recently.

“I heard his name a few times when I was coming out of college,” Smith said of House. “I always thought about working with him. I just never really had an opportunity. This past offseason, I had the opportunity to work with him and was very pleased getting in the work that we were able to do and the progress that I made.”

The Jets quarterback said he didn’t make any mechanical changes when working with House.

"I didn’t change anything,” he said. “Basically just going out there to work out and get better.”

Young wide receivers Quincy Enunwa and Shaq Evans joined Smith in California for the workouts with House.

As he tries to take a step forward in Year 3, Geno Smith worked with widely respected quarterbacks coach Tom House this offseason.

Smith's first two seasons as the Jets' starting quarterback were up and down -- mostly down -- and now he finds himself preparing for a training camp competition with veteran journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The Jets began offseason workouts Monday, and Smith said on a conference call with reporters that he spent part of his offseason training in California with House.

Smith was talking about throwing balls in the offseason to some of the Jets' young wide receivers, including second-year pros Shaq Evans and Quincy Enunwa, when Smith brought up the fact that he had consulted with House.

"I was training with Tom House out in California," Smith said. "I had the luxury of having those guys [younger Jets receivers] come out and work with me. The offseason program has gone well. I worked extremely hard on improving my mechanics and some of the things that I thought I needed to improve on from last season, that I could work on without being in the [Jets' formal] team structure."

"I heard about [House's] name a few times when I was coming out of college. I always thought about working with him. I just never really had an opportunity. This past offseason, I had the opportunity to work with him, and was very pleased with the work that we were able to do, and the progress that I made."

Smith later clarified that he didn't overhaul his mechanics while working with House.

"I didn't change anything," he said. "It's not a thing as to where I needed to change anything [with mechanics]. But it was basically just going out there to work out and get better. And that's what we accomplished."

House was a Major League Baseball pitcher from 1971-78. He then became a successful and innovative pitching coach. House has also recently worked with several prominent quarterbacks, including Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Tim Tebow.

Because the Jets are still early in their offseason program, Smith isn't entirely sure what to expect from new coordinator Chan Gailey's offense. But Smith has already done some work to familiarize himself with the Jets' new big-name receiver, Brandon Marshall.

"Brandon and I, we've gotten out on the field on our own and have done some things," Smith said. "Really just talked over things [with Marshall this offseason] and ran through routes and started to develop a chemistry and a bond with one another."

i have to admit he is impressing me with his ability to want to learn now he just needs to put it together and i think that final piece will be with a coach like gailey.

I'm hoping that to be the case as well. What impresses me about Smith is how he responds to adversity, a quality that cannot be discounted in this market. The best thing that could happen to this franchise is if the light goes on for Smith and he plays at 10-16 level this year. We are putting the pieces together around the QB position and on defense, if he does well we have a legitimate shot at playoffs. He's also inexpensive, so an added bonus.

The situation with Fitz's health probably means we will be stuck with Smith for the first month or so of the season, so I guess I'll just have to grin and bear it.

Not sure what House could do for Geno other than look to see if his arm motion is correct. That's House's specialty (trying to understand the cause and avoidance of shoulder throwing injuries). Hopefully Geno is also studying with someone on how to read defenses better and lessen his turnovers.

BTW - Tom House also caught Henry Arron's 715th home run while standing in the Braves bullpen and Buckner climbing the fence to try and catch it. Remember like it was yesterday.

I really don't know what's going on with him. Bowles said a week or so ago that he will miss all the OTA's and mini camps. Hopefully he will be ready for the summer camp.

He knows the system that Gailey ran in Buffalo, but he will be eons behind in installing the play book, working on his timing, with his new receivers. All really important stuff. I really just don't see how he will be able to catch up in the month of August all the stuff he will miss from now until then, and be ready for opening day. Smith should be miles ahead of him.

I think that's why they are so hot to get another QB here in case Smith continues to play the way he has played for the last two years. To have somebody ready for the opener.

I just don't have a clue who that might be unless they have another trade up their sleeve.

i did hear about bowles comments about fitzpatrick missing time, i just didn't think it would prevent him from starting the season..

LOLz if so, smith really is living a charmed life as the jets starting QB..

maybe geno winning the job by default (again) will be a blessing in disguise.. a month to sink or finally swim..

Kudos to Geno for the effort.

I think if I literally had millions at stake in my next contract i might give up a week of my off season to work with a QB coach. Every QB does this, even established vets like Brady

Well, I'm an anti-Geno guy and it's all I could come up with.

Agree 100 %

A real 4 way competition at QB for the first time in decades, despite blowhard coaches talking about it. May the best man win, whether it be Fitzpatrick, Simms, the new drafted guy or last year's guy!!

If Tom House can turn two kids from India with no baseball experience into pro pitchers, he can at least do something to help Smith. I love the idea that he is trying to improve. That shows you guys nothing?

Anyone remember when House used to work out by throwing footballs in the outfield? Maybe we have Geno throw baseballs in pregame warmups :)
