2015 Draft - Is the handwriting on the wall?

That we will trade our First round (#6 overall) pick ....for a multitude of picks .

I sense this based on the fact that we have signed 15 veteran free agents (many appear to be servicible hold the fort type guys) to one year contracts.

not sure i see the correlation between signing a lot of FAs and trading down. if anything, i would think roster spots for rookies will be harder to come by, which could lead to the argument for packaging picks to trade up.

but in the end, what i think the FA signing spree signals is that macc is trying to shore up the roster and get good depth and provide competition everywhere, and he will continue this approach to building the roster in the draft by taking the best player available and adding more competition and depth.

the only thing i see is mac and bowles will do what they think is best for the ny jets and the vision they have to build the team. Which should be a given but never attained all the time.

Agree 100%

I think that MacBowles feels we need to get a blue chip game changer at #6 like Fowler or Williams or Beasley or Cooper assuming both blue-chip QBS are gone and that this is more important than settling for a lesser player in order to get an extra mid round pick

Unless Mariota is on the board @ 6, I don't see any trade down happening. And why do we need a "multitude of picks", when we have well over 100 players currently on our roster pre-draft ? Only 53 can make the roster plus now 10 on the practice squad. Let's stay @ 6 and get a quality player.

If anything, with all the additions, there's one position we haven't addressed yet......olb. I'd assume we'll be taking one high in the draft.

Mariota, Williams, or Cooper could entice a prospective trading partner

My guess is we stay at 6 (no real trade partners if Mariota is gone). Surprise pick... Brandon Scherif . In additona to OLB, we really havent addressed the oline yet, with the exception of Carpenter and depth players.... Brick is getting long in the tooth and Giacomini and Colon arent the answer ......

First time poster on this great board! I could not agree with you more. With all the veteran depth signings this is not the year to trade down and pick up multiple picks for this year. However, if the opportunity presents itself for a trade down to the 12-15 range I would love it if the Jets' compensation was a first round pick next year instead of a second round pick this year and then they turn around and draft my favorite prospect, La'el Collins. Then if the Jets do not get adequate QB play this year they will have the ammunition to move up in next year's draft and grab a QB (if a good one is available). If Geno does progress nicely then the Jets will be sitting pretty with two #1 next year and hopefully the left tackle heir apparent or, at least, a solid replacement for Breno. But to trade down and pick up a lot of additional picks this year would be akin to Idzik's failure to use some of last year''s picks to either trade up in last year's draft or trade into this year's draft. If he had simply resigned Cromartie, not signed Harvin, and traded a couple of 2014 picks for a couple of 2015 picks the Jets would have been in even better position this year and he would have probably kept his job despite the poor draft he had.

I'm with you. If Mariota is in play I see the Jets trading out, unless they draft him ofcourse. If he's not there then they will stay at 6 and draft a premiere LB, WR or O-linemen. This team is ready to win now and all the Fas they pick up will give them 3-4 years of very good to great play so getting another blue chip players helps to win now. This team is no longer of the mindset of building for the future. That stopped when they hired Mac and Bowles.

I think we stay at 6 and draft one of the following players, depending on how the board falls: Mariota, Fowler, Cooper, White, Beasley. They can't all be gone.

These days leading up to the draft just drag on and on. Is it September yet?
Not quite sure they draft Mariota unless they feel he is a day one ready to play guy and franchise QB. I could very well be wrong but I think they're building this offense to give Geno another shot (meaning one year period) to see what he can do. They will draft a QB I believe but it won't be Mariota unless they think he can beat out Fitz and Geno this year and be our future. If not, they draft a blue chip LB, WR or o-linemen that can go and produce game one and draft a QB in the later rounds and let Geno, Fitz and that rookie QB fight it out for starter.

I think the Jets brain trust will see how it shakes out. I don't think they will pick Mariota to start him day 1. More likely they'll red shirt him for a year. Or if Mariota is available at 6 and the Jets scouts don't love him, they'll trade down. But the most likely scenario is that Mariota will be gone by 6. In that case, Mac knows the Jets need speed. So he'll draft a fast pass rusher or receiver, whichever they have rated higher at that point.

While drafting an OL at 6 would not be unthinkable, there is enough depth on the line to draft OL later in the draft.

There are 2 glaring weaknesses on the Jets roster as I see it. Obviously the first and foremost is QB. But lack of team speed is the second. My guess is that is where the Jets will go in the draft. Fast guys-offense and defense.

I don't understand this train of thought..."if Mariota is gone, no one else will be there teams would trade up for..."

No teams in The NFL want Amari Cooper, White, Gregory, Fowler, or Beasely? No team wants these guys? I find that hard to believe when they will all go top 15.

Last year Cleveland traded up 1 spot to get CB Gilbert. It takes 1 team to fall in love with a player...and teams fall in love with non-QBS too...

There will be potential trade offers..but just might not get as much as you think..I mean if the Jets can move 4 spots and get an extra 3rd and still have a guy they love..I say do it..

Even IF Mariota is available at #6, it's possible the Jets staff sees him as HYATT™ does, no sure thing.
Trading back 10 spots in the draft for an additional upper half 2016 Rd 1 pick & a high Rd 2 pick this year, would ultimately serve the lack of a quality franchise QB better NEXT year, when the Jets could then package (2) Rd 1 picks to jump to the top of the board and grab Connor Cook or the best QB of the 2016 draft.
(Prescott, Sudfield, Coker, Wentz, Hunt, & 2017 underclassmen Cardale & Johnson, are all potentially also in consideration for the top slot next year.)

Fowler and Beasley will probably be gone by 6, Gregory (after his dope smoking escapade is now a mid first), White may also very well be gone also (Raiders). I dont believe anyone will be trading up for Cooper. Maroita is the main trade target via trade. Its a deep WR class, and I just dont see the need for anyone to trade up for a WR

Guys, the number is 6, right? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and then 6..pretty sure that's still how the number system works.

Mariota
Winston
Williams
Fowler
Cooper
Beasely
White

There are 7, as in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7...

It is impossible, to the best of my knowledge, for 7 players to be gone in the 5 picks before the Jets pick...not sure my math is correct, someone can double check, but I am about 100% sure it is impossible for 7 players to be taken in 5 picks still.
