Jets pick up fifth year option on Coples

This regime is smart.

IMO it would be dumb not to pick up his option. We may be disappointed that Coples is not the impact player he should be, someone who consistently dominates games, and its getting to the point where he's unlikely to ever be that player despite having all of the physical attributes and talent to be that player, but regardless he's still one of the most talented young players on the team who can make jaw-dropping, game changing plays when he feels like it. Hopefully Bowles can make him feel like it a little more often.

If Coples can learn to play with a bit more leverage and keep a lower center of gravity he can be a great player... He plays too vertical.. If you notice he is often tackling around the head of guys...It sometimes is great, but too often he misses really Trucking someone in the run game especially...Looking forward to see if new coaching helps with his technique..

part of what is needed is a decision to use Coples in a role that maximizes HIS production, that fits what HE can do - not some general roster goal.

I defer to the coaching staff, but my sense is that his skills best suit DE when we show a 4-3 look.

Maybe also in a 3 man line when we are in dime coverage

I just doubt that he is well used in a traditional 3-4 OLB role.

That hit in the Raiders game where he demolished MJD
Yeah thats one very good example. That was one of those OH SNAP plays, where the crowd doesn't even cheer, its beyond cheering, just a collection of 50+ thousand OH SNAP's!, or another four letter word that starts with S.

I think that was the play that convinced MJD that is was time to call it quits.

I think we are looking at a Bryan Thomas type player. I think he is solid, holds the edge, and has a few big games here or there...Thomas also converted from 4-3 end to 3-4 OLB and was probably a better fit for 4-3....in the end, I think he will always be serviceable but nothing special. It also help that he is low maintenance and is good friends with Wilkinson and Richardson.

Some have compared him to Calais Campbell - is that fair? I honestly think he is capable of more if he is used according to his skill set. I'm not comfortable that Ryan did that.

IMO BT was what he was. He didn't underachieve, what you saw was what he was, similar to Calvin Pace who was also over-drafted in round one. Both good players who could set the edge, but neither having the skills to be impact players and edge rushers. I know BT had a lot of sacks in college, albeit at a lower level of competition, but he never was an explosive player with overwhelming physical attributes.

IMO Coples is a classic underachiever, a guy who has all of the physical attributes and God-Given ability to be an impact player, and you see that on occasion from him, you see him make the kind of plays that ordinary players can't make, so its maddening to watch him disappear for stretches and not dominate games the way he should. He's so naturally gifted that he can get by on talent and still make a good living in this league, and IMO he knows it, and heretofore he's been content with that. IMO if this player had a burning desire to be great, he would be an impact player and a household name. I hope Bowles can bring that out of him, but I am not optimistic. That kind of passion comes from within.
