Strange thing is, Namath is listed on the NFL site as having been drafted in the 18th round of the 1965 draft.

The round numbering must be a consequence of some decision on how to handle AFL draft results after the merger. But hey, everyone thinks it's amazing that Brady went in the 6th round. How amazing is it that Namath went in the 18th round?!
That link is wrong he was 1st in the AFL draft and 12th pick in the 1st rd by the Cards in 1965 NFL draft..

Wasn't Namath the pick #2 in the first round?
Broncos had #1 and traded that to the Oilers for Jacky Lee (remember him?) before the '64 season and then Oilers picked Larry Elkins, a WR who signed but didn't contribute much
Then the Oilers, who had the #2 pick, traded it to the Jets for the rights to QB Jerry Rhome, who in turn picked Namath
The Jets kept the 4th pick in the 1st round and drafted Tom Nowatzke who signed with the Lions instead
Pro-football reference shows Namath ahead of Elkins as #1 overall, but I specifically remembered Elkins as ahead of him. Out of curiosity, I called an old friend who remembered it the same way as we followed Elkins' short career for that reason
The whole thing was done in secrecy in those so it's hard to know exactly what he truth was but forgotten in the Namath story was that we did trade the Rhome rights for the pick and picked Nowatzke in the original position that year
