Philip Rivers headed to Tennesse in likely deal for Mariota [REPORT]

Another day, another NFL trade rumor. This one comes from Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole and has the San Diego Chargers making moves to acquire Marcus Mariota.

“San Diego Chargers will ultimately make a deal with the Tennessee Titans for the number two overall pick. As part of that trade, the Chargers will send the number 17 overall pick and Philip Rivers, just as a start, for the number two pick.”

Cole says Rivers would be thrilled to finish his career in Tennessee because the Chargers are not likely to pay him in a longterm deal. The Chargers get a youthful replacement in Mariota.

That's an old (internet-time) rumor. The source you cited ran a very misleading headline, further blurring the line between unsubstantiated single-source rumor and reality.

Everyone knew that Mariota would not be there at 6 as most others thought. The Jets at this point should trade down and out of the 6 spot, accumulate picks, and take an OL and QB or vice versa with their 1st and 2nd round picks. An edge rusher is a definite need, but the Jets offense still needs attention and that's why I think they should go offense in the 1st round.

I feel Tennessee would be smart to pull this trade. Though I think the Jets have much more to offer right now especially if you throw in Wilkerson. Though if i'am Tennessee, I couldn't care less about this draft in the 1st round as they leave a way with a stellar QB in Rivers and the Chargers 1st round pick next year (2016).

Then next year, having San Diego depleted at the position trying to groom Mariota, they will most definitely be a 2-4 win team. Giving the Titans another crack at the 2016 stronger QB class, where they can select one and have him groomed by Rivers.

If some how this doesn't happen and by some miracle Mariota drops to us and I'm at a position at 6 to:

-Acquire the Browns 2 1st round picks

-Trade the 6 to San Diego for Rivers straight up

-Draft Mariota

Personally, I'd pull the deal for Rivers instantly. With the team we have right now, we don't have that luxury to either groom a QB (we as fans aren't patient whatsoever in gimmick QB-See Geno), or build around an average QB (Fitz). This team all around is built to win right now, and Rivers would bring that winning attitude with legit Wideouts he's never had. He wont put them to waste like Geno would.

If "everyone knew", then who were those "most others" who thought????

San Diego will have to give up something other than Rivers Straight up to get any of the first 6 picks....!!!

I would take Rivers in a heartbeat. 3-4 year run with the defense we have and we are legit contenders right away and I would trade our #6 pick straight up for him.

Philip Rivers has never been to a Super Bowl or won an MVP award

I guess the Charger offense had no weapons for the past decade either...

I guess Rodgers is a choke artist too...except that one time.

It only takes one time. He's been a top 10 QB in the NFL for about a decade...and somehow you don't know that, so no point in arguing.

We will just agree to disagree, my friend

You think he's an elite QB

I think he is a choke artist who will never take a team anywhere.

nothing to discuss

rivers is probably a borderline top 10 regular season QB over the last decade. he's also 4-5, with 11 TDs, 9 Ints and an 85.2 passer rating in 9 playoff games. aaron rodgers is 7-5, with 23 TDs, 7 Ints, and a 101 passer rating in 12 playoff games. rodgers is also 2 years younger than rivers.

now don't get me wrong, i'd take rivers in the right deal. but i'm not giving up the #6 pick in the draft (and perhaps more?) for a QB turning 34 this season with a very mediocre playoff track record

Me either, but give me the Chargers 1 and rivers for 6 and we are on the way to the playoffs for 3-4 years, IMO, and winning a SB takes some breaks...so getting in the tournament and see how it breaks is the first step, IMO.

Me too. I think Rivers makes us one of the top 4 teams in the AFC For the next 3-5 seasons.

based on the above sequence of posts, i thought you were saying you would do rivers straight up for the #6 pick. if SD is also giving us the #17 pick, then sign me up (assuming rivers agrees to an extension with the jets)

Sorry, I was agreeing Rivers makes us a contender starting the day we get him. You are right, I wasn't clear. I would near more in return that just rivers for 6.

I think Rivets with Chan, Marshall, Decker, Amaro, and Kersey to go with Ivory, Ridley, and Powell would give us a top 10 O to go with a top 10 D...I fully expect a top 10 D this year regardless.

I think we could run and pass and stop both with how we are built.

As for the QB debate, I think the last 10 years have given us an elite 4 of Peyton, Brady, Brees, and Rodgers...I'm n I t saying he is there, but there is a tier 2 under those 4 of Big Ben, Rivers, Eli, and Matt Ryan (I think Flacco and Romo are a hair beneath this group, but I'd accept then in this tier over arguING about it)...you can likily flip a coin on the year on which qb plays to elite status vs very good status (they've all had elite seasons, just not the immortal careers of the big 4).

I think the tier 2 qbs have shown with the right pieces around them, they can win it all. I put rivers in that group.

I would not trade our #6 for Rivers and the 17th. I would trade a 2nd this year and a 4th next year. He's 34 yrs old. He is a lot better then what we have and can give us 3-4 yrs of a good QB. That #6 overall pick and the addition of Rivers can make the Jets a dangerous team.
