Mariota/Jets rumors - Mike & Mike this AM

Day 2 Prospect

I wasn’t able to listen to it but I heard Greenberg say that he is hearing the Jets are seriously looking to trade up to get Mariota. Can anyone else fill me in on what else was said?

Making a move for Mariota just seems to make sense based on what the Jets said their intentions are this off-season…..being aggressive this off-season to put a team out on the field that can compete today as well as being aggressive in building a team for the future. We have the luxury right now with Fitz and Geno on the roster to take a QB (Mariota) and let him sit, learn, and develop properly for the future. Obviously having a QB is a major piece in building for the future. My thoughts are who cares if he has to sit a year and who cares if we give up an abundance of picks if our regime feels Mariota will develop into a franchise QB and be our QB for the next decade plus. I understand we have holes to fill on this team but there is no bigger hole to fill than QB in this league and it’s a must in order to win. No QB is perfect but we must take a chance on someone at some point and make the sacrifice.

I'd be wary

Who would Greeny be "hearing it" from?

Certainly not MacBowles

@RichCimini Todd McShay says he can see the Jets trading UP for Mariota. Do you have a counter to his prediction? #jetsmail

@RichCimini: I'd be stunned if that happens. I wouldn't be surprised if they take Marcus Mariota at six, but trading up is a different animal. Consider: The Washington Redskins moved up from six to two in 2012 to select Robert Griffin III, and it cost them three first-round picks (2012, 2013, 2014) and a second-round choice. Mariota is a good prospect, but he's not a can't-miss, Andrew Luck-type guy. The Tennessee Titans, currently holding the second pick, may receive numerous offers, so there would be a bidding war. The Jets would have to trade their entire draft, based on the draft value chart -- and even that probably wouldn't get it done. Chances are, they'd have to surrender at least one future No. 1 pick, maybe more. They'd be mortgaging their future for one player, and that's risky.

Not a fan of moving up to 2. Not in this draft. Mariota is a guy I would take a chance on if he dropped into our laps at 6. Otherwise, take the best player on the board.

Jets trading up for Mariota or Winston, especially Mariota I would truly pause on. To do that is like what we did with Sanchez. Not only are you going to draft Mariota in the first round but trade up for him as well. As much as I love Winston over Mariota, I would be real hesitant on them doing that for him.

To me that means, Mariota should be ready to start and produce, meaning holding his on, on draft day. Not the team carrying him through the season like they did with Sanchez. Not the QB killing us in most of the games but the running game and defense pulling us through to a 9-7 record with a little help from Indy.

I'm talking he should be able to do or come close to what Luck did with Indy. Luck's stats weren't what they are now but he did enough and held his own to help that team to 11 wins. Not all QBs can do what Luck did and not all first round QBs can start their first year I'm clear but to trade up to draft him and he doesn't even start this year, WOW!

I have no problems with the Jets drafting Mariota at #6 but to trade up to get him is a huge risk. It's huge enough just drafting him alone at #6 . I have full confidence in the new regime and they have made all the right moves so far. If they decide to do this, they'll be giving up multiple picks and/or a player for a QB that no one is projecting will be ready to start this year. Wow, that is risky but if they do it I will trust in them.

Please no

Besides if they do trade up, they'll probably change their minds at the last minute and pick this year's version of Lam Jones

This morning on "Boomer & Carton," Carton said that NFL insiders (he didn't say who) he has spoken to told him the Jets are interested in moving up to draft Mariota then trade him to the Eagles for Bradford and two 1st round picks.

Get that deal done yesterday.

We get the better QB and 2 1s

If we do that deal, I predict us to sweep the pats next year if Bradford plays in both games.

I thought I heard Cartoon say he heard the Jets were going to trade the 6 to San Diego for Rivers and the Jets were going to give them their 2016 and maybe more

The fact is Cartoons only sources are the creatures dancing around between his ears

I love Bradford as a QB but his heath issues scare the crap out of me.

LOL -- if I'm doing my math right, that would mean Philly ultimately gave up:

Nick Foles
2015 1st and 4th
2016 1st and 2nd

for

Marcus Mariota
2015 5th (STL)
2016 conditional 3rd/4th (which they wouldn't get if Bradford played 50%+ snaps for us)

The kid would have to be Montana 2.0 or Kelly would get run out of town . . .

Chip just got rid of Shady McCoy, DJax, FOLES, and Jeremy Maclin...pretty sure he's building his team with his guys and if it doesn't work after giving up all that talent with all players under 28...he's on thin ice already...

True, but there's a difference between "cleaning house" and practically giving stuff away.

He can make sure draft picks are his type of guys, so I'd be surprised if he spent them Snyder-style, especially with all the self-created holes you mentioned . . .

[h=1]Jon Gruden: 'Ridiculous' to say Marcus Mariota is a 'system quarterback'[/h]
Jon Gruden, the ESPN "Monday Night Football" analyst, has an almost pathological aversion to being critical of any NFL player or coach, so take what you're about to read with a grain of salt. But in a conference call with reporters on Tuesday in advance of next week's NFL Draft, Gruden leaped to the defense of Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.
Mariota and Florida State's Jameis Winstonare considered the only two quarterbacks projected to be selected in the first round, perhaps even as high as Nos.1 and 2 overall. But the knock in some quarters on Mariota, last year's Heisman Trophy winner, is that he's a "system quarterback" who thrived because of the read-option and spread offense he utilized in college.
Gruden shot all that down, however. He's high on Mariota, and doesn't think Mariota or Winston will still be on the board when the Jets' pick rolls around at No. 6.

I couldn't agree with the op more about needing a QB. It is job number 1 IMO. With that said, I do not believe trading up would be wise. The Jets still have a lot of needs; OL, QB, OLB, WR. Trading up will makes most of those needs linger into following years. There are QB's that I think can turn out to be great in the late 1st/early 2nd (Petty) 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (Grayson/Hundley).

Trading DOWN IMO would be a great option for the team. We could fill all of those holes and get a coveted QB by trading down.

Not to mention, if the Jets sit tight, Mariota COULD fall to us at 6. More than likely, he will be gone and at that point, I think trading down would be the wisest choice.
