Ok, my take on the Jets so far (warning: it's not all green and white roses)
1) Leonard Williams: If we go to a 4-3 or a 4-2-5 then I love it. If not, I see it as a missed opportunity to improve the overall team. He's a player, no doubt. Now it's up to Bowles to find a way to maximize the personnel to justify this. Grade: incomplete.
2) Devin Smith: the biggest wildcard in our draft. Here is a player who caught 33 passes in his entire season at Ohio State. It's funny because people are always comparing receivers who did well at the combine as "the next Stephen Hill". If anyone has the possibility of being Stephen Hill 2.0 it's Smith. He ran nothing but go-routes in college, and this was after OSU lulled teams to sleep by running it every play. Is his deep speed that legit, or did he just benefit from being the guy who caught defenses cheating up, just as Hill did when he was in college? I think Smith could be great or he could be a complete bust. Boom or bust here and I think there were better, more complete WR's on the board when we picked. Grade: C+
3) Lorenzo Maudin: A kid that will be an immediate fan-favorite. He does have durability concerns though, just like last year's 3rd rounder and we all know how that turned out. My question is this: is the 5th rounder going to be worth missing out on Garrett Grayson, Duke Johnson, and Eli Harold? Because that's what flew off the board between our picks. This is such a tough one to call. He's a guy who runs 4.85, had injuries, and regressed his senior season. I don't think he's the answer to our pass rushing issues. Grade: C+
Caveat: I do believe in Macc and I whole-heartedly believe he knows better than me. I love how he's bringing in character and guys who are coachable and accountable. The Rex's knuckleheads era is over. We still need a RB and a QB desperately. Let's see what they come up with today.
