New York Jets
Draft pick: DL Leonard Williams (No. 6 overall), WR Devin Smith (No. 37 overall), LB Lorenzo Mauldin (No. 82 overall), QB Bryce Petty (No. 103 overall), OL Jarvis Harrison (No. 152 overall), NT Deon Simon (No. 223 overall)
Day 1 grade: A+
Day 2 grade: A-
Day 3 grade: A
Overall grade: A
The skinny: The new front office and head coach in New York landed the best player in the draft. That's a nice way to start your tenure even if Williams might not really be a true need for the Jets. That defense should be nasty for Todd Bowles, and Williams could provide some insurance in case Muhammad Wilkerson leaves as a free agent next season. Smith has plenty of speed and will help stretch the field for Geno Smith. Mauldin was a great value pick in the third round off the edge. With some time under his belt in the NFL, Petty might turn out to be the best passer in this draft class and finds a great home in New York to develop behind Geno Smith.

Bottom line: Top-heavy draft group adds to a talented roster assembled very quickly by new GM Mike Maccagnan.

I still would have picked WR- DGB over Smith in the second round.

I was OK with DGB, but some mocks had him as a boom or bust player. Not just character issues, his overall game. With Devin Smith, the skinny on him is that he can "take the top off a defense".

I think we did alright here. Certainly addressed a need with this pick.

The big knock on DGB was that he struggled with football IQ. Rumor is he never picked up the playbook very well at Mizzou.

Really interesting when you look at the overall big picture. They got rid of Percy but brought in Marshall. Marshall may be a malcontent at times but one thing that he is not is dumb; he is a very intelligent man. Petty and Fitz are both extremely bright. Devin Smith is bright. Leonard Williams is said to have great natural football instincts.

Maybe even more than character, I think Macc is targeting intelligence. Guys with high football IQ.

Personally, I really liked our draft overall with a few exceptions:

1) Deon Simon in the 7th???? WTH is that all about? We have probably the deepest DL in the league right now and they add yet another? That is a real head scratcher.

2) I really would have liked to see and OT taken. I'm fine with the Jets taking Harrison in the 5th, but really I was hoping they would get an OT with a higher pick. I was thinking more like Jake Fisher in the 2nd round? But who knows? La'el Collins was not drafted at all due to his involvement in his girlfriends murder. The cop say he isn't a suspect, but they need to speak to him. Assuming that's true, I would love for the Jets to get him as an UDFA.

With those two things mentioned, this was an otherwise excellent draft. I just really hope Williams, Smith, Mauldin, and Harrison can come right in and contribute this season. It would be about time that the Jets finally had a good draft that netted some good young talent. I love the Stacy pickup as a means of challenging Powell specifically, but also Ridley. I am not high on Ridley. I think the guy is a turnover machine. Would love to see Stacy beat out Ridley in TC making our lineup Ivory, Stacy, and Powell.

I think DGB is an awesome talent that may end up like Ray Rice or Josh Gordon. He scared me because I didn't want to waste a pick. I like how the Jets drafted high energy, high character guys that make it easier to cheer for.

I respectfully disagree about drafting Simon. We lost our backup NT Ellis and Harrison is a year away from possibly walking via FA. We need someone to groom for the position, and supposedly this kid has the size and talent for the all-important spot on the DL. Besides it was the 7th round, so not much of a loss if it doesn't work.

Most of the pundits discussing the Jets draft dont even note Posey and Stacy - who are results of the draft as well. Now, they are not all pros, but they are NFL players, acquired for a 7th and as part of the trade down. Makes the overall draft result a smidge better.

The announcers slammed DGB after the Titans picked him. Plus Mcshay said before the draft that Devin Smithwas the most underrated WR in the draft.

Imagine what Mac could have done last year when we had 12 picks.

No one could deny this being a great draft on paper. No matter how much they wanted to deny it or dislike the Jets. This may turn out to be the greatest Jets draft ever if two things, Williams turns out to be a beast, HOF caliber and Petty eventually takes over the job and becomes a franchise guy. Of course we need the rest to step up and do their part but Williams and Petty is key. Add in Marshall giving us 3-4 years of great play hopefully and Stacy taking over the RB spot for 5-7 years hopefully. We will win the trade value debate also. Icing on the cake is if they sign the rookie OL, Collins from LSU. If he is innocent and cleared and can sign with a team this year.

Agree 100%. I feel pretty confident that, at minimum, Williams is going to give us solid production for years to come. Just need to Bowles to maximize the strength of the personnel. But if Petty develops into a quality NFL starting QB, this is what will make it special. He's the key.

Or Marshall.

Truthfully, those guys should all be included as draft acquisitions.

Watching Mac work free agency and the draft this year like a boss, including the way he manipulated the board, its sad to think how good this team would be right now if he was our GM and making the picks in last years draft too. That was one of the deepest and best draft classes in decades and we had 12 PICKS in that draft. The degree to which we flushed that draft down the toilet is unimaginable. If Mac was running that draft and this one, right now our roster would be insane.

You know I am deeply concerned about all of you homers jizzing all over yourselves. This really is getting weird.

On paper, this is an excellent draft. ON PAPER, it is. So leave it at that.

The real test is seeing how much these youngsters contribute over this season. If one gets injured after 3 games? No matter how good that player may have done in that 3 games, he's still just another Dexter McDougle. A guy that has shown nothing to show he was worthy of being selected.

If we can get our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th round picks to contribute whether it be off the bench or in the starting lineup, then this will ultimately go down as an excellent draft. But until then, all this is is a bunch of weirdos diddling themselves.

Totally disagree with the the A rating

This will prove to be the greatest Jets draft ever with several pro bowl (go Jarvis !) and one HOF player. Time will tell but if you don't have season tix yet. Get 'em now because I'm going to be charging a huge premium for the games I can't go to.

The only problem is the agony of waiting MONTHS until the Atl. preseason game

The guys on Sirius said the same thing. They felt he was knocked becaus of the plays Urban calls. Their offense is built for big plays, making it look like their WRs can only run the go route. Smith was considered underrated because all his assets are not on film.
