Not sure how to frame this, but here we go.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/05/11/14-nfl-teams-took-tax-dollars-for-patriotic-pregame-displays/

I LOVE how this is covered by PFT. When Florio isn't running stories about how Brady and the Pats are innocent, he and his lackeys run out a piece like this.

Let's all focus on the Jets. The Jets got paid by the Department of Defense for specific branding. Look at what the Jets did. It's easier to be red, white, and blue when you're getting some green.

Oh, and in case anyone cares, here is a short list of the other 13 teams doing the exact same thing. But we don't pay attention to them. Let's all look at the JETS!

Why is it patriotic when a good ol' boy sport like NASCAR and a popular driver like Dale Earnhardt, Jr., have the National Guard as a primary sponsor, spending a total of $32 MILLION on NASCAR sponsorship last year, but spending less than $400K on the Jets over four years is an outrage?

Seriously. The Defense Department spends millions on NASCAR, and nothing. They spend money on 13 NFL teams, and nothing. They spend less than $400K over four years on the Jets? The Jets are unpatriotic!

The Jets and the 12 other NFL teams should be a shame of themselves. Woody Johnson is a billionaire , who has more money than anyone can ever want, and yet he has to nickel and dime the U.S. Taxpayer .
Jmo I don't care if it was only five dollars the Jets got, or if NASCAR does it, it's inexcusable who ever would take money to honor the troops. ( two wrongs , don't make it right)

The sacrifice our troops have made for this great country, and it shouldn't take money to honor these heroes. The Jets should be willing to do that for free. Hopefully Woody Johnson wasn't aware of this, and he corrects this injustice.

The Jets were willing to do that without getting paid, and in fact had for years honored veterans without getting paid for it. The National Guard contacted the Jets and other NFL teams about increasing the visibility of their brand during games. If you want to complain about someone, complain about the Department of Defense. I guess they shouldn't do any advertising.

And yet the 13 other teams (many of whom took far more money than the Jets did) and NASCAR and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., all go unchallenged, while the Jets get bashed over this.

Sorry, but this is nothing but a chance to rip on the Jets, and it conveniently comes out right when the Pats get in hot water. They didn't have anything substantive to go after the Jets, so they hoped this would stick.

This is a marketing campaign by the National Guard and they should pay for it in my opinion.

People act like the Jets (and perhaps these other teams) wouldn't honor veterans at all if they didn't get paid for it. They act like the Jets (and perhaps these other teams) went to the Pentagon and demanded money to honor veterans.

Geez, are people really that dumb? Can they not tell when something is advertising? Nobody said a word when Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and the rest of NASCAR were getting more than $30 million per year in branding. But give a team the media loves to hate $100K per year to up their visibility, and it's somehow all of a sudden disgraceful.

Guys from the Scout board may remember my military background. (I won't go into details here)
The Jets have voluntarily GIVEN money to support the vets and active members of the various services. They may have even donated the proceeds from this promotion to those causes.
This is a cheap shot by a writer with an apparent axe to grind. Consider the source.

the PFT article leads with the jets but it mentions that 14 teams did the same. however, the reason it started with the jets is because it is based off an article from a local source (NJ.com). so this isn't some league-wide conspiracy to get the jets, or some anti-jets propaganda from PFT (and it wasn't by noted jets critic florio). it was all started by a local paper who reported on the story

The other teams were an afterthought, gaining mere mention at the end of the article as a list.

It may not have been deliberately targeting the Jets, but I don't think PFT minded focusing on the Jets, even when many other teams on that list took far more money than the Jets.

In general, nj.com does a very good job with the Jets, much better than some of the local coverage, so they certainly aren't to blame. But the way the NY tabloids have run with this is disgraceful. They're acting like the Jets wouldn't thank the military if they weren't getting paid, which is ridiculous because the Jets were thanking the military LONG BEFORE they got paid.

Much ado about nothing. Curious that this came out when it did. Just as the Patriots are being smacked for their devious behavior.

Coincidence?

let's be real here. there is no one in the world who is talking about this story. the pats story is national leading news, on the front page of newspapers and websites (sports and otherwise) everywhere. while espn has a story on this on its nfl page, it doesn't single out the jets.

if anything, the pats penalty coming down completely washed away any likelihood of this story gaining traction.

Well, in fairness, PFT did give it some ink. And the Daily News has an "Exclusive" in which an "Army hero" calls it "shameful" and driven by "greed."

The problem for these 14 teams is perception. No matter what they did, they were screwed.

If they took the money and ran the extra promotions, they were greedy and unpatriotic.

If they refused to take the money and just ran their regular veterans' promotions, they were anti-military and unpatriotic.

Whatever they chose to do, they would be wrong.

Yeah, I get that. But the timing is still curious to me. It reeks of "the Jets aren't so squeaky clean either!" from someone with an agenda, even though 12 or 13 other teams have participated as well, and other sports (NASCAR) don't seem to get any attention over it.

YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT..its advertising..if the Jets didn't honor them and get paid a pittance for it....they would have had some other corporation in the time slot.....

400 K divided by 4 seasons....divided by 10 games a year..is 10 K a game..hardly a dent in what they could probably make with some other corporation..like they have the Waste Management throwing the footballs into cans between 1st and 2nd..and the Bud Lite Towel shooting thing into the fans during game...

the jets story was started by a local paper/website (nj.com). not sure why a local news source would want to make the case that the jets aren't so squeaky clean...well maybe a rag like the daily news would, but nj.com usually has solid jets coverage

Every time we see military commercials on CBS, FOX, NBC, etc, they are paid for. Those stations(who are quite wealthy as well) aren't donating those spots. Seems like a non story to me.

You make a fair argument that nj.com and the Star Ledger are usually quite fair with the Jets.

It's how it was spun nationally that bothers me.
