Mauldin could become the Jets Top Pass Rusher

I disagree but if Mauldin needs to drop that weight then imagine the weight Coples has to drop who still weighs about 280 at least? Mauldin is a football player, born and bread and his heart more so then anything. He will be just fine at whatever weight he plays at. Coples appears to be the problem or should I say concern.

Coples,i believe, weighed in at about 275 last year. That was with 8% body fat. i remember reading an article about it last TC.
I doubt he could lose anymore weight than that.
Coples is one of the players, i think, is going to have a break out year playing in Bowles defense.
Coples,Richardson, Wilkerson & Williams rushing in on 3rd and long with a blitzing, take your pick, Pryor, Mauldin, Babin, Gilchrist, Ik E.Going to be very interesting to watch.

Do you guys think Babin gets cut?
For all of his fanfare and the amount of opportunities he had to rush the passer, which were plentiful, he had a grand total of 2 SACKS last year. I say he doesn't even make it to the final cutdown.

This is all just fluff offseason nonsense. I'll wait until I see him do ANYTHING on the field before I start stroking the guy.

Makes you wish Coples had half his passion for the game.

#1 rule of drafting players - only draft players who love football.

Maudlin does and Coples doesnt. He's a classic case of being naturally good at it, so he always did it.

It's like Clowney at SC and the difference between his soph year and jr year. The love was gone his final year. It's all over the film. It became a job and what did he have, 3 whole sacks? Gross.

This guy has heart.

Its like Colin Cowherd said (an actual great listen..sort of the Bill o"reilly of sports, unmatched and straight forward) says he would only take kids that "had to overcome something" or "not have everything handed to them"..not be trust fund kids with a safety net.....this kid will play hard..because literally..his life depends on it....and he had to overcome.....

It's guys like Mauldin who come out of nowhere and become those very good pass rushers. Guys like Houston, Dumervill, Barwin, Kruger, Wake and others. Perfect spot to draft a 3-4 OLB not the top 10.

The guy has a little JAMES HARRISON in him..an undrafted guy, not fastest guy..but relentless motor and drive....

I hope so...but for where we got him, I'd be happy with a young Calvin Pace that gets you 10 sacks a year. Where he gets them here and there and at the end of the year you're surprised he got 10. I dont think this year. He'll be in packages and special teams. I just hope he gets a handful and shows some flashes and that he might be ready to start next year while we draft another young OLB prospect mid rounds again. Keep stalking the pipeline.

I just want to see pressure on the QB from someone other than our dline.

Sideline to sideline this guy may be one of the better guys in the draft this year.

@RichCimini, If Mauldin excels, could we see Coples switch to DL? Perhaps even next year? #Jetsmail #nyj

@RichCimini: I don't see that happening because, first of all, I'm not sure Lorenzo Mauldin and Quinton Coples will play the same position. Under Rex Ryan, Coples was the "rush" linebacker, often lining up as a down lineman. I think the plan is to use him in the same role, but that doesn't mean Mauldin will be used in that position. Bowles hasn't specified his plan, but I could see Mauldin playing the "Sam" position -- the strong-outside slot. Currently, that job belongs to Calvin Pace, but we all know he's on his last legs. If I were the Jets, I'd groom Mauldin to take Pace's spot. So, to answer the question, no, I don't see Coples switching to the defensive line.

We fans, myself included, have a tendency to fall in love with measurables and story lines. A few years ago the love was pouring in for Terrance Ganaway even before he stepped on the field. He was handed Bilal Powell's spot on the spot by many posters. I'm not ready to give away Calvin Pace's job.

As for Coples and the number of sacks he should have, I remember reading a stat about how often he was double teamed as opposed to how often the aforementioned Pace was. It was something like 3-1 in favor of Coples. Take from that what you like. The issues is between Pace, Richardson, Wilkerson, Harrison, Pryor, Harris, Davis, et al, I'm not sure any one of them will hit double digits. But together, they should rack them up this year. Just sayin'.

If you enjoy the process of watching a career unfold, up or down, this is one worth watching, no matter how it turns out. I think that's what people get wrapped up in.

Will Devin Smith's career be as fun to watch? For me, yes. But for others, this one may be "more fun" because of his backstory.

Whether it is Kyle Wilson and Stephen Hill or Sheldon, Kerley, and Mo, its always fun to watch kids develop, IMO, but some have amazing back stories that make it even more amazing (remember Curtis Martin's story, didnt someone sneak into his house and kill his grandmother, pretty sure they stabbed her through the body and into or through the matress). That was an incredible story, how he came up from that horrible upbringing. Some stories are just more compelling.

Lorenzo Mauldin impressive during Jets' minicamp

Right off the bat, defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin is already making a name for himself on the New York Jets. Selected in the 3rd Round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Mauldin brings an incredible work ethic, toughness and speed to the Jets’ defense. With minicamp already underway, Mauldin has coaches and teammates speaking highly of what he brings to the table.

As he worked mostly with the second team to start off minicamp, Mauldin is making his case to move up on the depth chart as quality depth on the active roster. With his skill-set also comes the opportunity to also play as a linebacker on the Jets’ 3-4 defense That could be a possible route that defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers wants to put Mauldin in.

The Jets will definitely love to add his pass-rushing abilities into the mix since this upcoming season should be a rebounding one for the team. So far during minicamp, Mauldin has illustrated his speed and ability to make plays at any given moment.

Considering that Calvin Pace hasn’t played up to his potential, Mauldin could definitely make the team and be in a rotational situation at outside linebacker. The Jets could utilize Mauldin in this role to take full advantage of his speed and ability to get to the quarterback.

At Louisville, Mauldin contributed 113 tackles, 20.5 sacks and had 5 forced fumbles. If he can bring those kind of statistics into the Jets’ defense, Mauldin will definitely be a player to watch this upcoming season every single time he steps foot on the field.

If his strong early performance in minicamp is any indicator, Mauldin will definitely make the case to not only make the final roster but earn some time on the football field during the games that actually matter in 2015.

He is getting rotated into the 1st team nickel package already (good start for a rd 3 pick, IMO) -

7. Odds and ends: A couple of rookies, defensive end Leonard Williams and linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, got some work with the first-team nickel package. ... Brent Qvale and Brian Winters shared time at right guard with the starters. ... Nice practice for tight end Jeff Cumberland, who made a couple of grabs in red-zone drills. The offense was significantly better in the red zone than the previous day. ... Safety Rontez Miles was active near the line of scrimmage, but he let a potential interception sail through his hands.

Jets mailbag: Can Lorenzo Mauldin become a starter as a rookie?

It's tough to tell without any full-contact practices yet, but, yes, I think he's got a chance to start at some point. We won't get a true read on him until training camp, where it will be interesting to see what he can do as a pass rusher and in coverage. Also, Calvin Pace's job is certainly up for grabs, but I have a tough time seeing Pace not making this roster.

One thing that I really like about Mauldin as I watch videos of him is that while he is a really hard hitter, he is a tremendous form tackler. I feel like we've missed a lot of tackles in the past because people go for big hits and don't wrap up. Mauldin wraps up!

I hope so, we need more pressure coming from our LBs. Not just your typical 5-7 sack season. I mean a complete monster in the making, 10 plus every year. Ofcourse I'm hoping we drafted the next Ray Lewis but that is most likely a pipe dream. Players like that come around once every 25 years or so. Anyway, we need someone to take over for Pace and either Coples needs to lose 15-25 more pounds to make him a true pass rushing LB or we need to move him to the d-line where he truly belong and find a replacement for him as well.

Most sacks Ray Lewis every got in a year was 5..:)
