8) New York Jets' defensive line
Todd Bowles inherited one of the top defensive lines in football when he took over Gang Green. The Jets' imposing front features two of the most disruptive interior defenders in the NFL in Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson (pictured). The duo absolutely annihilates opponents at the point of attack, exhibiting exceptional strength, power and agility while blowing past blockers on the way to the quarterback. Quinton Coples has been a bit of an underachiever based on expectations, but he has posted 16.5 sacks in three seasons while playing out of position (3-4 OLB), which suggests he could blossom into a legitimate threat in Bowles' aggressive defense. Throw in first-rounder Leonard Williams' potential as a versatile playmaker, and it's clear: The Jets' talent and depth along the D-line will lead to a lot of sleepless nights for offensive coordinators around the NFL.

4) New York Jets' cornerbacks

In a pass-happy league, it is imperative for an elite D to have at least three cornerbacks capable of winning one-on-one matchups. The Jets clearly have the best threesome, with Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine joining forces. Revis is back to putting receivers on the island. He is a technical marvel with an extraordinary football IQ. Playing behind a ferocious pass rush this season, Revis can be even more aggressive in coverage, with the ball coming out quicker from the pocket. Cromartie is capable of strangling receivers with his aggressive bump-and-run tactics. His combination of length and ball skills dramatically shrinks the QB's strike zone. Skrine doesn't have the reputation of his Pro Bowl partners, but he's a quality third corner capable of locking down WR3s. Given Bowles' willingness to attack opponents with a barrage of Cover 0 pressures (all-out blitzes without safety help), these CBs will have plenty of chances to showcase their impeccable cover skills.

I saw this earlier. If anything, it makes the Jets' defense a scary proposition for any team.

check with grogan about our direction again...

We are the scariest at stopping the run, rushing the passer, and defending the pass...what's wrong with our direction?

Unfortunately we also have positions that are scary for different reasons . . .

every team does

Yeah, but not every team has SB potential on one side of the ball, with playoff-caliber talent surrounding said scary position.

I know I'm whining -- it's just tough to feel so close and yet so far . . .

Without a superstar QB, why bother? You'll never win games.

I mean, could you imagine the Jets trying to make the playoffs with a Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez, much less make the conference title game, or go into a place like New England and win. You can't do that with one of those guys, and you shouldn't even try.

Wait...what?

Weird.

I feel completely the opposite. I feel like we aren't that close, nor are we that far. In my mind, we aren't that far in that the defense is stacked, we have a good running game, and there are weapons on offense. But we're not that close to truly contending, mainly because of our OL and the absence (so far) of a franchise-worthy QB.

I guess it's about perception.

I will say we all have different opinions true on where we see this team but can all agree, its far better then the past two years. From the GM, HC, other coaches to the players. What that means, we don't know but we will find out soon enough. This team has the capability to win 13 games this year or only 6. All depends on QB play obviously but injuries, team chemistry, o-line play and our defense that appears to be lights out will factor also.

No secret, if we get positive and consistent QB play at the least, no reason why this team shouldn't win 10 games. That should be good enough for a wild-card. Can they do any damage then in the playoffs, time will tell. Anyway, our d-line and secondary is scary as sh%t and teams have to account for that. Our defense can be top 3 for the next 5-10 years, if build and maintain correctly. Players have to be hungry enough make that mark also.

I think it's all about turnover differential, and our vastly improved defense should help that stat a lot. If Geno or whoever ends up playing can limit turnovers, there is enough talent at other positions to carry the offense at least to respectability, and IMO, that's all they need to be at least a fringe contender.

I agree.

With the potential defensive play we might have, 13-14 points from our offense will likely be enough in a lot of games....

Can we get that? "If the Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise..."
