Cromartie on Milliner: Don’t say he’s a bust

Two years ago, the Jets used the ninth overall pick in the draft on cornerback Dee Milliner. This year, Milliner is battling just to make the roster. So does that make Milliner a bust?

Not according to fellow cornerback Antonio Cromartie, who says Milliner is just going through the natural growing pains of a young player who has had to deal with injuries.

“It’s not a point of saying, ‘He’s a first-round bust,’ because I don’t believe that,” Cromartie told NJ.com. “He shows a lot of potential in what he can do, when he’s healthy.”

Cromartie believes there’s a role for Milliner on the Jets.

“Dee can play,” Cromartie said. “That’s something that he has to figure out himself, and come in into the system, and say, ‘I’m ready to go, I’m healthy, I’m going to be ready to go when training camp gets here, and I need to show everyone that I can come in and play with the best of them.’ ”

Cromartie may be right. But Milliner is running out of time to prove it.

Miliner is 23 years old and entering is 3rd year. Maybe he is running out of time here but someone will give the former top 10 pick another chance. It was Rex and many Jet fans that expected another Revis when he was drafted, another team won't have those expectations.

High praise coming from Revis, he doesn't usually have a lot to say about this sort of thing.

Are people forgetting that he missed the entire 2014 season with an injury??

What we saw in 2013 was poor play the first 8 games but steady improve the final 8, and the last two games in particular he was lights out.

I don't understand why giving up on him is even a remote possibility. Nor should he be traded.

Cromartie is on a very team friendly deal, if he doesn't live up to standards, we are going to need another CB. Or imagine if someone gets injured.... Look what happened last year.

Milliner should be part of our long term plans.

well to be fair...he WAS drafted by idzik, so well...you know... :boxing-punch-smiley

Does that mean you both have his jersey, autographed photo, and receive Christmas cards from the Milliner family you place beside the Idzik family Christmas card?

That's good, since you didn't get it.

Hobson's remark was directed at the Idzik conversations from our old board as was my response.

As for Milliner, Cinini projected him to be on the PUP list week 1...watching to see his reps in the future will tell us if that's true or not. It will also explain the rush to sign 3 CBs (Revis, Skrine, and Cro) with Williams and McDougle also coming back. It's a loaded CB position that appears jets staff and those close to the team feels he isn't and won't be 100 percent for some time. Hopefully he proves them wrong and shows up to camp 100%...but I'm glad the new regime has decided not to rely on him and to be happy with anything we get out of him.

Kind of seems like the Dee and Geno paths are very similar...except I'm not sure Dee is even on the depth chart yet until they know when he will be ready to go. I think the new regime is in a show me mode for both.

No way. See, I try to be open-minded in the evaluation of both Milliner and Idzik.

Idzik was a bean counter GM who was limited as a talent evaluator. He had a below average draft with 12 picks, despite making an excellent, outside-the-box pick in Sheldon Richardon, and a few unknowns in Dee Milliner (top rated CB from Alabama) and Dexter McDougle. I think both are very interesting players who could make our secondary ridiculously good. Durability questions are fair with both, but Milliner's torn Achilles happens to players regardless of injury history. It's a tough luck injury. Just ask Dante Fowler. Idzik also signed two very good players in Eric Decker and Chris Ivory (4th round highway robbery deal with NO). For that reason, I'll hold back unleashing the wild dogs on him as he signs a full time job offer with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

For the record, im glad Idzik's moved on, and Maccagnan is here. Just sayin'. It ain't a black and white world in the NFL.

Don't agree at all with paragraph 2, supe

Milliner proved that he can improve and play at a high level.in the NFL when healthy. He was sabotaged by a moron HC who decided it was critical for him to play on the extra point coverage team where he injured an achilles

Smiths case is much different. He's proved that he can't improve and can't play at a high level in the NFL when healthy which caused the new GM to trade immediately for a viable experienced replacement and then draft a better development prospect in the fourth round

You don't feel that both Geno and Milkiner have played inconsistent? Geno has had multiple games with perfect QB ratings...Milkiner has looked awesome at times...and both have looked awful at times?

Lets see Geno show up when the games mean something, not just when the team is closing out non-playoff seasons.

His inconsistency has made him one of, if not the worst QBs in the NFL. I don't call that inconsistent, I call that bad.

milliner has had one season (not two) and showed steady progress. Geno has had twice as many games and took huge steps backwards during year 2. milliners issue was injury related

I don't see any similarity at all either.

Funny, Milliner's success came the same stretch of games as Genos...but Geno's stretch is meaningless and Milliner's was progressive improvement. Huh. Milliner came back year 2, was torched by Rodgers and Nelson, then got hurt again...seems a bit bias to not see a correlation. But I understand having more optimism for a Cb than QB. One position is a hell of a lot easier to play, that's for sure.

Still hurting: This shouldn't come as a surprise, but cornerback Dee Milliner (Achilles' tendon) might not be ready for training camp, according to Bowles. Milliner had surgery eight months ago, but we're talking about a severe injury. It would be a shock if he doesn't begin training camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list. He could start the season there, too. Said Bowles: "You just want to be sure about those things. You don’t just want to throw people out there and have them have a bad reaction." Running back Stevan Ridley (knee surgery) also is a question mark for the start of camp. Safety Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder surgery) has missed the entire spring, but he should be cleared for camp, per Bowles.

Ok. Let's play that game. Year one was a wash.... But do you really want to use getting torched by the best QB in the game as a measuring stick vs, Geno playing, being historically awful, getting benched in 2014?

QB is far harder to play, no doubt. But Milliner hasn't done as poorly vs his peers at the same position as Geno has against his. You expect a rookie to have growing pains in year one. You don't expect them to regress in year two.

And yes... Despite his stat improvement in 2014' I believe Geno regressed in year 2. It just doesn't look as bad due to the anomaly of week 17 against Miami.

add to the fact that you can disguise bad CB play a lot easier than bad QB and can afford a longer learning curve. If your QB is playing awful, you simply cannot hide it. Rex tried last year and we ended up as a joke.

Milliner going into 2015 is like Geno going into 2014 in my eyes....however even then it will be harder to gauge his play as he wont be starting. I wouldn't even think about cutting bait with the kid until at least the 2016 season.
