Westhoff on the defense...

If this defense is anything less than top 3 it is a disappointment. Got to love Westhoff's honesty. Always admired the way this guy tells it like it is.

Have to agree as well. This defense is WAY too talented not be at least top 3.

With that said, the Jets had the number 1 defense under Rex in 2009. How do think this defense compares?

Hard to say it isn't more talented than in 2009. The 2009 defense generated sacks and pressure purely by Rex's schemes. There weren't many legitimate pass rushers on that team.

Now it is quite the opposite. This DL could easily have 3 players with double digit sacks. Just straight up by beating the guy in front of them like a rented mule.

Now, with this much improved secondary, the DL will also benefit in the way of coverage sacks. That was unheard of last season.

So what do you say? This defense is more or less talented? What will this defense finish statistically? How many more turnovers than last season?

Having the obviously better and more modern defensive schemes and better coaching will also help

Like Coach has said, on paper it looks good, but let's wait to see how they mesh. Teams are gonna quick pass to the middle of the defense. Can we defend that ?

I think we will be strong at that actually. I think our weakness could be at the edge.

Also, not sure we will be Top 3 in yards. I think it is an amazingly dumb way to grade defenses.

In theory YES. Remember the Jets drafted Calvin Pryor to be an enforcer of the middle of the defense. Because of suck a lack of talent, Rex had him playing in a role that was not suited for him. That's all different now.

The Jets have the defense all the needed areas now. Pryor can go back to SS and play the way he is accustomed to and best at. That is, enforcing the middle and COVERING TE's over the middle.

If Pryor is truly all that, and I believe he is, then that problem with the Jets defense no longer exists now.

I agree with Westhoff.
Mainejet - I can't believe I am going to say this but i think you're a bit optimistic when you say that we have a DL capable of three of them getting double digit sacks. I don't see that. We are stout against the run but do lack that pass rusher. maybe next year we finally draft one along with a oline man.

OK, so I guess guys like Mo Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, and Leonard Williams are not capable of getting double digit sacks?

ANYONE of those guys could easily reach that total.

Except what you said was that we should have three DL with double digit sacks.... Not any one of them

If we get strong, passionate, hard hitting Safety play this team will have the top rated Defense in the NFL.

I guess reading comprehension is not your strong point?

I know what I posted. I POSTED IT.

We could easily have 3 DL with double digit sacks is what I posted. And BTW, that was actually what Westhoff claimed as well.

TRUE. And I think everyone is banking on (including myself) that Calvin Pryor can become the player we all thought he'd be when he was drafted.

He was NOT that player last season. Due to limitations in corners and talent, Rex needed him in a different role. That's why he didn't do well in his rookie campaign. Just another way John Idzik screwed the pooch.

But in the end, you are right. The tell tale sign will be if Pryor can fulfill that role as enforcer and cover TE's. If we see that early, odds are this defense will be ranked very highly this season.

Must be slow if we are arguing if our 3 stud dlinemen are going to get 10 sacks each or not...especially when most people haven't seen Williams play outside of his YouTube highlight film.

Season can't start soon enough.

Considering there is a snowballs chance in Hell that we have three DL with double digit sacks on a hybrid 3-4 front where the talent dictates a regular rotation and somewhat reduced snaps for a least two of those players. If that's what you actually meant. I gave you the benefit of the doubt thinking you just misspoke, but in reality you were engaging in hyperbole. My mistake

HA HA HA Actually there's a snowballs chance in hell we play a 3-4 front. That's absurd.

The Jets base front WILL be a hybrid 4-3 front, NOT a 3-4. In fact, if Bowles chooses to do something like that, he should be fired for stupidity on the spot.

And in regards to your claims? We shall see...

Quite sure we won't be lining up our 1T at 3T with Harrison so who exactly will be playing for the majority of the snaps?
Richardson and Wilkerson are classic 3 technique tackles, and truth be told, Williams is likely going to line up mostly as a 3T as a sub.
The don't have the right personnel to play the majority of their snaps in a 4-3 with Williams and the "Sons" on the field the same time... If they're going to line up in a 4-3, it's far more likely that they push Coples up onto an end.

Now if Harrison is the one off the field (because he is ill suited for anything but lining up over the center) you'd likely see the following in a 4-3

Williams??? - Wilk - Richardson - Coples

Which I don't understand as an option on the majority of snaps because you're removing a top 3 run stuffer Harrison from the field and forcing Williams to play at a position he isn't ideally built for. Like playing Pryor at FS instead of SS

Add that with the fact you've got a coach that prefers a 3-4.

Give me a defense that is top 3 in points allowed and creating turnovers. Tired of hearing about a top 10 defense that middle of the pack in points allowed and at the bottom in creating turnovers. I want to see sacks and turnovers on big 3rd down not the big plays the defense the past few years allowed.

Bowels defense was ranked in the middle of the NFL, but of course they were actually one of the best. Ranking a defense by Yards allowed is so dopey

Yup, give me a defense that forces turnovers, stiffens in the red zone and limits big plays and I will be happy. I agree that we can be a top 3 defense but I hope it is in points allowed. Last season we were 26th in the league in percent red zone TDs allowed and dead last in turnovers forced. Those are not the numbers of an elite defense.
