Coach Ron Rivera named WR Stephen Hill the standout player of Panthers OTAs

stephen hill spent last year on the panthers practice squad. outside of kelvin benjamin and past their primes cotchery & avant, the panthers had no WRs (not counting TEs). hill couldn't win a job on that crappy WR corps last year. hard to regret letting him go.

if he finally turns it on this year, good for him. but no reason to regret letting him go.

I would totally agree if he was healthy, but he wasn't and you have to take that into consideration when you are cutting bait with a size/speed freak you drafted in the second round.

Stephen Hill was having a dominant NFL debut in his first ever NFL Game, not just good, he looked terrific that home opener (verses the Raiders?), but late in the game he was seemingly going in for a TD when he got his legs taken out from under him inside the five yard line, close to the goal line, and it was a direct hit on his knee that came in from a side angle, the kind of hit that usually results in a torn ACL and that was my immediate fear when he came up limping.

It wasn't an ACL, but it was a sprained MCL and perhaps some torn cartilage that kept him out for the next six weeks or thereabouts, and the knee never completely healed, for the next two years that knee was an ongoing issue that sidelined him for weeks at a time and for most of the following years training camp when it flared up again and he had to have some fluid drained (twice). IOW's I don't know who was treating him, but he probably could have sued the SOB for malpractice!

Anyway, nobody ever talks about that history but its true, every word of it, and thats why I wouldn't have cut him last year.

It seems to me the Panthers did it the right way and gave him a full year to get healthy while they taught him their system.

We'll see how it goes, he very well could fail, but I would have held onto him for at least another year, especially with all of the crap we had at WR last year, there was at least one WR (Gates?) we could have cut to keep Stephen Hill.

If I'm not mistaken, Hill's HUGE Break-out game was against the Buffalo Bills. I was sitting @ a bar with my next door neighbor from Buffalo, and kept poking him in the ribs every time the rookie made an unbelievable catch or TD.

Hill is motivated by pats on the back not being kicked in the ass from Rex and Jet fans. He's getting that missed love in Charlotte, and his MOJO is back. Plus the Panther's CB's are average @ best and old, so Hill is tearing them up. Watching the local sports down here and watching Hill make Odell Beckham type catches, makes me sick ! 6'4"/230 with 4.3 speed don't grow on trees !

I'll believe it when I see it...yes, he has the "tools" but he's a big p*ssy when it comes to fighting for a ball.

Billy, You might be right in that they are still in gym shorts and not pads, but I swear, he looks, talks and playing like a guy on a mission with something to prove.

Maybe so, but like Wicker Man says -- guy has to do it when the contact is live before I will believe it. With Kelvin Benjamin showing up out of shape and struggling with hamstring injuries, Hill should get a shot this preseason.

The Jets simply were the wrong team to draft & develop the bumblebee from GT.
Sad for the Jets, sad for Hill, but life and the NFL move on.
Good luck to Hill, I seriously hope he thrives with Cam and CAR, but as has been said, his time was up in NJ and he hadda go because he wasn't developing the confidence of his QB.

HYATT™ is still a fan of Hill though and believes he will one day become a very good NFL WR, if not a TRUE #1 WR.
His downfield blocking was never suspect & he did get open in the end zone frequently, even if the QB didn't trust him enough to go to him.

They don't need him to be their best WR, Kelvin Benjamin has already proven to be a legit # 1 WR in my view, and that was only his rookie season, he figures to keep getting better. They also drafted Devin Funchess who has the potential to be a good # 2 with tremendous size. If Hill can challenge Funchess for the # 2 spot I'm sure they'll be trilled, and the loser will hopefully give them a good # 3.
Hill is not a 3
