LT D’Brickashaw Ferguson declining concerns - owed $40 mill over next 3 years

Thanks for mentioning PFF. They've had him rated as a top 7 tackle (either side) four times in 9 years. He's been to three pro bowls. He's never missed a start in nine years. As someone who watches line play pretty closely, I can tell you that both Mangold and Ferguson were the least of our worries last season.

But keep up the anti-Brick narrative.

They currently have him ranked 43rd of the 72 possible starting OTS in the nfl...guess you find that flattering...

I wonder if the other 42 ranked above him will be getting $39 mil. over the next 3 years?

I have always been a fan of D'Brick.... but he is not worth that kind of money.

The young guys need to step up quickly.

only if you believe Ferguson is getting worse and worse...I guess that opinion is crazy to some that players get worse as they get older.

But post stats on him 9 years ago about how good he was...I am sure how good he was 9 years ago has a lot to do with how good he'll be this year. ;)

He should be "servicable" LT this year...but pretending he isn't getting to the point he's a bottom 15 LT is just being a homer.

Look at it this way, Jumbo Elliot was old and declining when we signed him... Brick is the same age Jumbo was when we signed him.

Hey Rott.... do you and Lith get together for Jets games out in ChiTown?

I know he's from them parts as well.

It is me, Boozer. Same guy - never liked the name Lith and it seemed like a different group of posters over here than the old JI site, so when I decided to sign up here I decided new site, new name.

You have a habit of misquoting me. I said he has consistently been solid for 9 years and has consistently been durable for 9 years. I'm not talking about 9 years ago. I'm talking about his overall performance over 9 total years.

I'm not suggesting Brick is as good as he was 5 years ago. Of course players deteriorate as they get older. I'm simply saying it isn't as drastic as you're suggesting. I fully support drafting another LT next year in the upper rounds. But in the meantime, Brick is more than adequate for the next couple of years. Reports of his demise are greatly exaggerated.

I think an improved offense at the skill positions will help our linemen stats. When a protection is designed a specific way, and no one is open and your qb runs the wrong direction, it's a weak spot exposed. Not bad line play, but it counts against the linemen.
I think brick stays a brick on this team, restructures each year as he gets older and is a great mentor as he approaches the end.
Are you sure the article wasn't written about colon?

If you're an objective Jet fan, operative word being objective, you know Brick's play has been on decline for a while now. The argument and question is not if Brick is a serviceable LT (he is), it's his worth regarding the dollars he's being paid and the cap space his salary is burning? Personally my eyes say no.

I don't put complete faith in lineman statistics. You point out a good reason why here. As a matter of fact, I trust my eyes during games way more than a stat sheet afterwards. People can accuse me of not being "objective" if they want (and I'm sure my screen name doesn't help), but my eyes still see a good LT who can hold his own. The money he's making doesnt bother me at all. He's earned every penny of it.

I think Brick will be better with an improved LG. My main concern is if Colon is starting again at RG for the Jets.
Maybe Giacomini will improve if RG improves from last year also.

It's a fair assessment. The o-line continuity is important. And if you're weak at multiple spots, it makes everyone else's job harder.

That applies to any job where people work together, even non-football related. I'm looking forward to improved interior line play this season. Not 100% confident we have it, though.

I'm thinking it might be great for the roster and our salary cap to cut him after the season assuming he continues his decline? He's never been as consistent as Nick Mangold and his ability does appear to be leaving him.

But for me, it's all about what he does this season. If he even plays average this season there should something said for that. He'll be facing an awful lot of animals this season.

It hurts us more than helps us financially if we cut him after this season. We need to get 2 more season's out of Brick.... then he can be cut, saving us $12 mil in 2017 (Richardson 5th year)

I, too, am hoping that Carpenter beside Brick will allow for Brick to just worry about Brick and what he needs to do. Colon needs to go and one of the younger guys need to step up at RG... it's that simple! RG and RT are the 2 uncertainties coming into this season.

The AFC East will be an OLmen's worst nightmare this season with Buffalo and Miami and the Cheats! "All hands on Deck!"

Not true. We'd save over $9 mil in cap space if we cut him in 2016.

Now, we won't do that until we have a replacement on hand.

$5 mil in dead money.... so you're saving $4 mil.
Dead money counts toward the Cap.

Let him play out 2016 and get the big saving in 2017.
Like you said..... we don't cut him until we have a replacement. None of our young players, nor a 2016 Top 15 pick will be better than Brick in 2016.

Although, if he's a post June 1 cut.... we save $7 mil. That would be worth it if we get him back at a cheaper cost or we find someone to play LT.

You need to read that link again. $5 mil dead....$9 mil saved...cap hit was $14mil+
